  1. I like Justice League Unlimited as much as the next guy, but the last episode of it aired in May of 2006. Heroes, meanwhile, didn’t start until Sept. 2006. If it’s awards for stuff in 2006, why are we voting seven months into 2007?

  2. I find THIS disturbing:

    COMICS GREATEST MOMENT
Death of Superboy (Infinite Crisis #6)
Death of Roger the Homunculus (B.P.R.D.: The Black Flame #3)
    Spider-Man unmasks (Civil War #2)
Clone Thor kills Goliath (Civil War #3)
Death of Booster Gold (52 #15)

No one could nominate something UPBEAT or HEROIC?

  3. I can’t believe that May Jane statue didn’t make best comics merchandise. Guess I’ll have to go with “Sexy Slave Girl Leia.”

  4. Hey guys!

This is Kiel from Wizard. I just thought I’d drop in to note that the majority of the nominees are culled from suggestions from our readers over at the Wizard site. In a few of the categories where we received a smaller field of nominations, the staff at the magazine added in some of our own personal favorites (which is where I believe both the Oni nod and the Roger call out came from, amongst other things). With that in mind, I don’t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that the majority of fans’ nominations fall pretty closely in line with the Marvel and DC product that sells well in the Direct Market.

As for eligibility, anything that came out in 2006 could be nominated (if it’s a miniseries, then the final issue had to ship in ’06). We started the nomination process in early February, but don’t do the voting until now because we like to give the awards out at the Wizard Chicago convention. And I know that some of the tangential categories aren’t direct comics tie-ins, but the general view here is that if you went to see V For Vendetta, Superman Returns, Art School Confidential and X-Men 3 in the theater this year, you cared about Casino Royale as well.

I should probably note as well that the link above doesn’t just provide the list of nominees but the opportunity to vote as well, so if there are any projects on the list you fell deserve recognition, please click through and vote.

Thanks for the comments and for taking the time!

  5. Hmmm… Comics Greatest Moments. Can’t think of many uplifting events in the history of DC and Marvel. Reed and Sue’s Wedding? Spider-Man tossing off that machinery and saving Aunt May’s life? The Amazons discarding their symbolic bracelets as they join the United Nations?
simple fact of literature: conflict rules. Happy Endings are anticlimactic. Death and destruction are more interesting and memorable.
what’s interesting is that Captain America’s death was not listed.
As for fan awards, well, they are on better or worse than the professional awards. Wizard, however, can be criticized. Where are the manga fans? Best Trade Paperback? And how about some critical awards, such as Character Most In Need Of Improvement? Most Dubiest Achievement? The Stan Lee Award for Hyperbolisity?
also, how do the Wizards compare to CBG’s awards?
