Don’t know about Kris in particular, but I suspect that generally this is a second-generation effect of the “ground-level” comics boom of the 1980s-90s. Artists who would not have considered doing comics if they’d grown up in the 50s-60s-70s, seeing only corporate-owned Captain Underpants characters, have instead been intrigued by the better small-press and indie comics of more recent decades, and began applying themselves to task. Now that these people are hitting their strides, we are seeing the fruits of this cultural transformation.
