I feel like Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo have more than earned the status of being referred to simply by their surnames. Their creative partnership has lasted for years and years, and at C2E2 their new project has been announced. Returning to Hellboy, the new graphic novel Hellboy: The Midnight Circus will see the iconic red demon man back when he was an iconic red demon boy.

More good news comes in the fact that Dave Stewart will be on hand as colourist, for this 56-page OGN. The story sees a young Hellboy struggling to come to grips with the B.P.R.D. service, and attempt to run away. Whilst on the lam, however, he accidentally stumbles across a demonic circus, filled with creatures from hell. Things do not go well. Speaking on the project, Fegredo says:

Growing up is tough enough, even when you don’t know the weight of the world rests on the future of your yet-diminutive shoulders. Mike has woven a tale of coming of age for the young Hellboy made all the more poignant for knowing his future.

The book will be released in hardcover on October 14th, retailing at $14.99.

  1. Love how these guys use color, so unique… So Mignola s use of blacks & shapes anticipates the color schemes which is such a big part of his art. Then he has this saturated red or blue with in the muted tones in proportion giving it harmony. All part of the storytelling. Nice alternative the heavy handedness you usually find in the medium with every tool in photoshop being used or the excessive realism.

Don’t even know what they stories are about but it looks enticing. Maybe Kevin O Neill is doing something close with Nemo- bringing design in as an active element to amp up the storytelling.. When comics are done like this , its looks both fresh & timeless.
