Darwyn Cooke, Ivan Brandon, B. Clay Moore, and William Tucci are among the creators involved in bringing back a series of DC war books as one-shots this September, it was announced this morning.
This September, DC will bring back a number of familiar war titles in a series of one shots from a number of the best and brightest creators in the industry, including Darwyn Cooke and Ivan Brandon on WEIRD WAR TALES, B. Clay Moore and Chad Hardin on OUR FIGHTING FORCES, the return of OUR ARMY AT WAR, William Tucci and Justiniano on STAR-SPANGLED WAR STORIES and Matt Surges and artist Phil Winslade on G.I. COMBAT, with each issue sporting a cover from an A-list pool of artists that include Cooke, Mark Schultz, Geof Darrow, Joe Kubert and Brian Bolland.
Here’s the cover to WEIRD WAR TALES #1 by Darwyn Cooke and G.I. COMBAT by Geof Darrow to show why this was a good idea.
Question for the audience: what are the best comics that tackle seriously the ongoing “War on Terror”, including but not limited to our Long Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan?
I liked:
1) “Shooting War” by Anthony Lappe and Dan Goldman.
2) THE PHOTOGRAPHER: INTO WAR-TORN AFGHANISTAN WITH DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS by Emmanuel Guibert
Books that were decent but fall short of a thumbs up:
1) REFRESH, REFRESH” by Danica Novgorodoff
2) ALIA’S MISSION: SAVING THE BOOKS OF IRAQ by Mark Alan Stamaty
3) GRANDVILLE by Bryan Talbot (This one’s an allegory.)
4) PRIDE OF BAGHDAD by Brian K. Vaughan
Books I didn’t like:
1) AFTER 9/11: AMERICA’S WAR ON TERROR (2001 – ), A WORK OF GRAPHIC JOURNALISM by Sid Jacobson & Ernie Colon
2) AMERICAN WIDOW by Alissa Torres & Sungyoon Choi
Here’s a link listing a few other books on the topic:

Joe Sacco did a short comic for the British GUARDIAN a few years back that still sticks in my mind, titled “Complacency Kills.”
There doesn’t seem to be a link at GUARDIAN anymore, but the .pdf file still exists on their server.
You can download it by saving the first link on this page:

Or why don’t I just post the link, for that matter? Here you go:

Slate.com has a slide show presentation on Iraq war comics.

Wow, this should be awesome. have both the “haunted tank” and “enemy ace” dc showcases, love it!
suprised nobody tackled “the war that time forgot”, it’s got war stories AND dinosaurs.
Looking forward to these one shots.
Hopefully no friendly fire casualties…
