Eight weeks!

Where have you been?! Where have I been?!

Busy! That’s where!!!

So what’s happened since last time?!

Lots of stuff!!!

I’m no longer working at DC Comics,” said James Robinson! “Spending a large amount of time planning something grand, only for someone else to scuttle it is tiring,” said J.H. Williams III! “It’s almost like nothing after 1985 happened,” said Rich Johnston! “DC no longer pays creators for that stuff,” said Mark Waid! “DC is in the toilet right now,” said Paul Jenkins! “This does not apply to U.S. citizens,” said Barack Obama! “There’s too many hoes in this house of sin,” said Kanye West! “Once you free your mind about a concept of harmony and music being correct, you can do whatever you want,” said Hansjörg Moroder!

Awful! Eight weeks of hell!!!

Yeeeaaargh!!!

So let’s do the April column quick! So we can move on to the laid-back dub-step awesomeness of the May column! Yes! Go go go!

Twelve current “New 52” titles have been axed!!! Six more are selling below 20,000 units!!!

Average and total DC Universe unit sales were way down in April! Average sales the lowest since August 2011! Total sales the lowest since July 2011!

Medic!!!

…right?!

Wrong!!! Justice League of America didn’t ship in April! And Aquaman (Aquaman!!!) didn’t ship in April! And there were only 61 new DC Universe titles in total! Which is the lowest number since May 2012! So it’s all kinda relative and not as bad as it looks!

Okay?! Let’s do this!!!

See below for the details and, as usual, please consider the small print at the end of the column! Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com‘s estimates can be found here!!!

Sales boost may be due to new creative team! But the solicited creative team was Fabian Nicieza and Fabrizio Fiorentino! But it ended up being Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti! Who were solicited for issue #20! And Eduardo Pansica! Who wasn’t solicited at all! But it’s still the lowest-selling “New 52” book that hasn’t been axed!!!

Disclaimers, et cetera!

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors!

ICv2.com‘s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate! Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month!

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales to retailers, not customers! Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom! Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month!

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in parenthesis behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”)! Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used!

Titles released under the Johnny DC imprint and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well! To learn (a little!) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here!

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month! In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that!

For a more lyrical approach to discussing sales figures that covers all the essentials in a more condensed, less tedious fashion, finally, go right here!

  1. WOW! I love the Disney Comics punctuation!
(Done back in the Golden Age because periods might disappear from plates! Or a printer’s devil might mistake the period for a burr and remove it!)

  2. Pulse pounding punctuation!!!

As for the rapid sales decline of many titles after the first issue: today’s readers do not have the attention span for multiple issues of a title: advise renaming the title with each issue, and numbering each title morph as ‘#1″.

  3. Whistling Skull was awesome. Wish this was a regular series.

    JSA era heroes + weirdness + Tony Harris = <3 <3 <3

Your loss if you didn't read it.

  4. Ouch those are harsh sales numbers. No matter how you spin it the New 52 is like watching a car wreck. Dido telling retailer effectively to hold on to their hats since the next phase is about to begin doesn’t inspire me, the buyer, to buy the retailers offering of your products.
Any momentum the relaunch had has been squandered by bad corporate editorial and management decisions and governance. But keep making those decisions DC, the horrible cover promotion for Villans Month is shaking loose about another 6 titles including your top seller from my buy list (not the only reason but gives me enough of a push to cut it.)

  5. And Mark according to the latest Previews the Batman Beyond Unlimited is getting restarted with a new issue one since they have new creators moving the charcter to college. Expect that to spike up again in the next couple of months instead of seeing if it really found it’s level.

  6. Isn’t “Ragefuck” a proper noun that you can get away with saying, like “Dickweed” or “Dick Nixon”?

  7. Always fun to look at the numbers, then walk into my local comic shop and see a dozen copies still on the shelves. :) Interesting how the 1st issues have such large sales and see them slip almost to half their numbers but I think the real tale is after the 4-5th issue.

Also, the LOSH numbers aren’t that bad so why cancel it? Going digital? Seems to have support.

  8. I had no idea DC doesn’t pay creator, like mark said. I hope this is a misunderstanding. I had not heard this.

  9. “Don’t worry about it! At least it looks nice!!! Medic!!! Medic!!! Go go go!!!”

This final statement had me LoL. I loved the buildup to it!!!

  10. I will never understand how Bob Harras was able to land his editor-in-chief job at DC after he nearly ran Marvel into the ground. He was incompetent then and has learned nothing in the 15 years that followed. Many current readers may not recognize what is happening at DC but its literally identical to how things operated during his Marvel leadership down to the gimmicks, top down editorial approach, treating creators like not really necessary evils and more. I wouldn’t mind one of the comic sites doing a true then and now comparison to just really lay it out. He should have been blacklisted from comics and not sure how he avoided it.

  11. it wasn’t until the 3rd fake green lantern crossover name that I realized you were making them up. the first two sounded entirely plausible as i’m not following the GL books right now. Damn.

And whoever in the comments said Whistling Skull was good- you crazy. Ir ead the first issue, it was utterly incomprehensible drek. Not only did I have no idea waht happened it, but i didn’t give a shit either. Just abysmal crap. I did not come back for issue2. No-one else did either it seems.

  12. Kingdom, it pays to have Jim Lee as a friend.

Also, since Arkham Unhinged hasn’t had any new content out since Injustice started, the odds are the print run will end with #20.

  13. So the silly gatefold cover gimmick didn’t work. Batwing changed creative teams and the lead and bought themselves maybe 3 more months worth of publication beyond whenever DCE might’ve wanted to pull the plug. Stormwatch maybe got a month with a new team and a complete reboot of the concept.

Katana and Vibe need to get shuffled into Trinity War as tie-ins or something or they’re going to be another couple entries into the “8 issue series” that DCE seems to be so good at these days.

Phantom Stranger might be one of those new “15 issue series” DCE seems to be trying out. The upcoming Pandora would be so lucky.

And even though nobody outside of Lemire has managed the title of “turn-around artist” for some of these series that have cut bait, it will be interesting to see what effect Jordan on Superboy, Nelson on Supergirl, and Kot on Suicide Squad have for sales in the era of DC de-emphasizing the help. Cakes and eating and things.

Also Green Team and The Movement: where do they begin life on the hard-scrabble midlist?

Also also, the faltering of Constantine. So sad.

Silver lining: Zero Year crossing over, Trinity War, the Ringwood Ragefuck crossover in the GL books, more new Batman and Superman and Justice League Three-Thousand books! Homogenization toward all of the things you buy already…just buy more of it!!!

  14. Thanks for all the links in the beginning of the column. I had no idea DC was still shedding their creative staff’s morale left and right. I think JH Williams III should focus on indie project. The market right now is really receptive to new indie books and with on art at least part time I’d bet it would sell around Saga levels. But I don’t know what contracts and future plans he has in play.
I’ll echo a previous poster about the gimmicks making me nervous as a flashback to the mid to late 90s when I got burned out and stopped reading comics. I just realize I’m now only buying one DC comic regularly. The new Swamp Thing book looks pretty good though. Might go back and pick the previous issues up.

  15. I’d look for Talon to drop some more. At the end of the most recent, it said, “To be continued in Birds of Prey.” That assures I’m out. I don’t play the forced crossover game on books I barely care about anyway.

  16. Usually i find this column pretty ridiculous but this time it was funny. Thanks!

Interesting how Aquaman title being not shipped in april is noteworthy. New high for character?

  17. There were a ton more gimmicks under Tom DeFalco’s reign as Marvel EIC than under Harras’s. I don’t have a super high opinion of either, but by the time Harras took over in mid-’95, most (all?) of the chromium/hologram covers were behind us (most special issues were just double-sized at $2.99, but with regular covers) and Marvel was already spiraling toward bankruptcy. Not saying Harras helped, but don’t forget that he was the one who started Marvel Knights and hired Joe Q and Kevin Smith for Daredevil in the first place. Forming the Ultimate line (back when it mattered) and putting then-barely-known Brian Bendis on Ultimate Spidey #1 in 2000? That was under Harras. Then again, “Marvels” was under DeFalco’s purview. There was a lot of crap too, but I wish the current DC was as ‘good’ as EITHER DeFalco or Harras’s Marvel. And that’s a pretty sad statement.

  18. I really enjoyed the exclamation points in the titles.

I wish Lemire and Kindt would stop working for DC because I really enjoy their work, but I don’t enjoy these types of books. I mean, obviously, if they make a decent living off of it and they’re happy, that’s all that matters, but I’d like it if they could find the same success outside of DC books.

  19. @Dan Ahn: Harras wanted Howard Mackie to write Ultimate Spider-Man, and Lobdell to write Ultimate X-Men. I can’t help but wonder if the mainstream comics business would still exist had he gotten his way.

  20. @Ron, I thought it was the worst Tony Harris art I have ever seen, and a bad barely comprehensible story. With characters I couldn’t give a rat’s ass about. I wanted to like it as I usually love the creators involved, but no dice.

  21. The people have spoken on Whistling Skull! Opinions are many and not good! Story was all over the place but the art carried it for me. I’m biased as I love 40’s superheroes. The weirder the better. Loved it! :)

  22. I truly wonder why Heidi and Marc-Oliver Frisch even bother with this column anymore. If all it is an exercise in new ways to belittle and make fun of your readership, than what’s the point?

  23. This was hilarious.
WERE YOU AWARE?!? “Return of Ringwood Ragefuck” is DC’s appropriation of Obadiah Oldbuck, incorporating him into the New 52 continuity as the source of the critical weakness of Alan Scott’s power ring.

  24. Chris Hero-
You are aware that both Kindt and Lemire write and draw their own creator-owned books, right? It’s not an either/or proposition.

  25. I’m really surprised JLD isn’t doing better. Its a great read every month, and its by Lemire, my favourite DC writer. Shame he is leaving Constantine so soon.
I’m over Snyder’s decompressed storytelling. The first storyline took a year to complete. One whole year!! And now this new one is the same! Its ridiculous.

  26. RJT,

Yep. I have every mini-comic and creator owned work both Kindt and Lemire have done. I just hate seeing their creator owned stuff sell a fraction of their DC work. Mind MGMT is selling like 9000 copies a month through Diamond.

On the other hand, if both Kindt and Lemire enjoy doing the DC work, power to them. I just wish we lived in a world where they could make as much doing creator owned work as corporate work.

  27. “I’m over Snyder’s decompressed storytelling. The first storyline took a year to complete. One whole year!! And now this new one is the same! Its ridiculous.”

And Watchmen! 12 issues? What were they thinking?

What about Sandman: The Kindly Ones? That was like 13 issues! Talk about excessive! Stories shouldn’t be that long!

And how about that Garth Ennis? 66 issues for Preacher! 66 issues to tell a story! Why, it could’ve just been five issues!

  28. “I truly wonder why Heidi and Marc-Oliver Frisch even bother with this column anymore. If all it is an exercise in new ways to belittle and make fun of your readership, than what’s the point?”

Sorry TomO, if you don’t like the way they shuffle the deck chairs on the Titanic…
