Batman #33.jpg

By David Carter

Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

The column is already running late, so I won’t belabor too many points here‚Ķ

July 2014 was a record-setting month in many categories for the Diamond NA-served comics market (see John Jackson Miller’s analysis for the full skinny). DC shipped a whopping 83 comics this month (up from 68 in June).

As expected, the Batman 75th Anniversary covers don’t do as well as the Bombshell covers did last month. Whether this is because retailers (as a group) order-ordered on the Bombshell covers and were correcting, or because there was a perceived lesser demand for the Batman covers it is hard to tell; I suspect a combination of factors. It may be several months before things settle down in the new way of ordering variants.

Despite the decline in variant cover orders, DC’s overall sales were only down an average of 400 units per title, mainly due to the reappearance in July of Superman Unchained and Sandman Overture, the strong debut of Grayson, and relaunches of Teen Titans and Suicide Squad.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month right here at The Beat!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

The price-enhanced final issue of “Batman: Year Zero” with a Batman 75th Variant comes in at 12K below last month’s Bombshell, but still 8K above May’s numbers. It’s enough to put Batman at #2, behind Rocket Raccoon’s Loot Crate-enhanced debut of nearly 300K and just barely ahead of the month’s #3 comic (Amazing Spider-Man #4 at 117,917).

Justice League is running a month behind and thus gets its Bombshell Variant this month. It’s an increase of a bit over 12K, where based on its chart position had it come out last month with most of the other Bombshell variants we would have expected to see the increase to be closer to 16K. As it was re-solicited for July retailers would have had a chance to see how the other Bombshell variants were affecting sales and it appears that they downgraded their expectations here, though not to the level that they were adjusting down their Batman variant orders from the Bombshells.

In other words, I don’t think we have the final word yet on what the long term effects will be of DC’s new variant ordering scheme.

The change of direction and title for the Dick Grayson franchise does spectacularly well, as sales of the first issue of Grayson nearly match those of the New 52 debut of Nightwing. Sales are enhanced by a Batman 75th variant as well as a couple of other variant covers that are par for the course (including a 1:100 incentive). The are very good debut numbers, and if it follows the standard model of sales for new titles it should settle down to around 50K in a few months, which would place it quite comfortably ahead of where Nightwing sales finished.

10 - HARLEY QUINN ($2.99)
11/2013: Harley Quinn #0 -- 114,212 [141,580]
12/2013: Harley Quinn #1 -- 92,153 (- 10.8%) [120,312]

Sales drop over 17K from the Bombshell variant, but are still more than 14K above May’s sales. These continue to be great numbers for a former C-List character whose current series is clearly striking a chord with a good number of readers.

13 - SANDMAN OVERTURE (Vertigo) ($3.99)

The best-selling Vertigo title by a huge margin, even with the large drop for the third issue. I could be that some readers are tiring of the delays and have decided to wait for the collection, or the delays have given retailers enough time to assess actual sales and adjust accordingly. Regardless, this thing is going to sell very well and for a very long time once it is eventually completed and collected.

14 - SUPERMAN UNCHAINED ($3.99)

Delays continue to plague Superman Unchained and sales are affected adversely. Back in 04-05 when Lee was drawing the main Superman title for twelve issues, sales started at 244K and ended at 116K. With Unchained they started even higher at nearly 272K but have already fallen to nearly 68K.

16 - HARLEY QUINN INVADES COMIC CON #1 ($4.99)
07/2014: Harley Quinn Comic Con #1 -- 64,978

An oddball one-shot starring Harley Quinn sells very well, especially at $5. Harley Quinn has pretty much become cemented as DC’s publishing version of Deadpool; let’s see if they follow Marvel’s lead and overexpose her with multiple series and specials and burn out interest‚Ķ

17, 18, 22, 23, 25 - BATMAN ETERNAL ($2.99)

This is the first month that Batman Eternal issues were not returnable, and you’ll be pleased to note that the sales numbers more or less fall right in line with our previously recalculated sales for the first twelve issues. A five week month means five weekly issues, a nice little bonus boost for what it either the top of DC’s middle or the bottom of DC’s top.

There was a Batman variant and a couple of incentive variants for the second Johns/Romita issue. Taking into account the effect of the Bat-Bomb differential and a typical 2nd issue drop, these numbers are pretty much right in line with what would be expected. The first Johns/Romita issue sees nearly 7K in re-orders, which is a good sign for continued interest.

24 - ROBIN RISES OMEGA #1 ($4.99)
07/2014: Robin Rises Omega #1 -- 60,488

A one-shot tying in to the ongoing “Hunt for Robin” story in Batman and‚Ķ clocks in with 4K more than the parent title, and that’s without a Batman 75th variant (there was a variant cover, but it was a 1:50 order incentive) and costing $2 more.

Oddly, if they’d put this in a Batman and Robin Annual at the same price, it likely would have sold less than the parent title‚Ķ

The relaunch produces the desired effect as sales more than double from the last issue of the previous series. There was also a Batman 75th variant which no doubt helped things as well.

All four issues were returnable, so the figures have been adjusted accordingly.

For some reason #9 saw a bit of a jump, but then it was immediately corrected for with issue #10.

These numbers have to be something of a disappointment for DC, and a bit worrying that this is the title into which they are tying their big September event. Also worrying is they they’re launch a third weekly series in October, and I’m not sure that readers’ pocketbooks are up for such a thing.

A team book featuring your two buzziest anti-hero characters + Relaunch = Increased sales.

DC tried three different style sod title relaunches for New 52 titles this month: A complete title change and change of direct for a character (Nightwing/Grayson), a straightforward relaunch with the same title (Teen Titans), and a relaunch with the word ‘New’ in front of it (New Suicide Squad). New Suicide Squad may have sold the least of the three, raw numbers wise, but it might be the most impressive. Unlike the other two, New Suicide Squad did not have a Batman 75th Anniversary variant (though it did have an order incentive variant like most #1 issues). First month sales of New Suicide Squad were nearly identical to first month sales of the New 52 debut back in September 2011 (49,979).

DC may have been looking for some sort of clarity as to which style of relaunch would be the best, but the jury is still out. Short-term, all three were a success. The one thing we can be sure of is that we’re going to see more of these cancel-and-relaunches in the future.

Ends its run above 25K, which is something of a small miracle for a Vertigo series not called Sandman these days. Stands a good chance of having decent sales in its collected edition too, so let’s called this a sorely needed boost for the Vertigo brand.

117 - BATMAN '66 MEETS THE GREEN HORNET (Digital-First) ($2.99)
06/2014: Batman 66/GH #1 of 6 -- 32,983

I recall reading somewhere that this had been an OGN commissioned by the previous regime but then shelved, and was now being resurrected and chopped up into a mini-series before being released as a collection. For the second month in a row, Diamond only released the top 300 and not the top 400. For purposes of the summary charts below I'll be using either the sales of the #302 book (6,594) or the sales of the most recently previously known issue, whichever is less.

Because of a fairly strong month sales-wise and a greater amount of product in the market overall in July, the cut-off this month is rather high. In addition to missing the sales data for these three titles, we likely also missed a good amount of re-order activity.

The sales index number is a ratio of the title's current month sales to the average sales figure of the line to which is belongs for that month. So a sales index number of 1.0 means that a title sold very close to the sales average for that line.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)
The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.
ICv2.com‘s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.
Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.
If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]“). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.
Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it's a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.
Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.
Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.
** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300/400 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300/400 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

  1. Thanks. Good readin’ as always. :)
But argh, wrap text feature seems to disappear halfway thru the report…

  2. Regarding Futures’ End, I would speculate that the “Elseworlds” nature of it – taking place entirely in a future we will never reach – has put a damper on it that the new Earth 2 weekly will not suffer from. EXCEPT that I think there may be some mis-communications leading some readers to think that Worlds’ End is also taking place in the future or some such.

  3. The formatting is bugged. The Beat only uses a tiny, tiny strip of the screen, but several entries here ignore that and goes beyond it… to where we can’t read it.

Also, out of 97 shipped books from DC, only 3 shows growth (though some missed the 300 cutoff mark). But the 3 books increasing are:

    06/2014: Justice League #31 — 75,803 (- 2.1%)
    07/2014: Justice League #32 — 88,179 (+ 16.3%) [delayed bombshell]

    06/2014: Supergirl #32 — 22,481 (- 1.3%)
    07/2014: Supergirl #33 — 22,802 (+ 1.4%) [Crossover finale, but that’s never really increased sales before has it…?]

    06/2014: Batman Beyond: Universe #11 — 14,068 (+ 1.4%)
07/2014: Batman Beyond: Universe #12 — 14,419 (+ 2.5%) [Seems like genuine increased interest and sales!]

  4. Oops, looks like I dropped a tag which has messed up the formatting; I’ve let Heidi know and hopefully she’ll be able to fix it soon… Sorry ’bout that!

  5. It seems as though American Vampire Second Cycle has been shifted to bi-monthly, based on the recent solicitations.
Really bummed to see STAR-SPANGLED WAR STORIES start so low. A great book!

  6. Looking at The Unwritten’s numbers makes me glad the series is heading into the homestretch. Hopefully DC/Vertigo will stay true and publish the title until issue twelve drops.

  7. Wow, can’t believe Swamp Thing is falling so badly. I can believe Infinity Man and Forever People have such bad numbers based on how books like this have been selling for DC. But bummed by both of these. 2 of my favorites by DC right now.

  8. “Harley Quinn has pretty much become cemented as DC’s publishing version of Deadpool; let’s see if they follow Marvel’s lead and overexpose her with multiple series and specials and burn out interest”

Deadpool is Marvel Comic’s second biggest solo character next to Spider-Man. Sales of the core title and spin-off mini-series over the past couple years bear this out. I think that 4-5 years ago Marvel were indeed publishing too much Deadpool, but that hardly “burned out interest”, lol.

  9. Is Deadpool interest really burning out? The Marvel column is always calling it a success haha! :)
Does anyone know why Diamond is now no longer releasing the top 400, but went back to 300? I quite liked knowing how some indies were doing in particular…

  10. Oof, stinks about GI Zombie. It’s really cool! I wonder if it came out under Image if it’d be appealing to a different set of people and be more likely to stick around??? It’s essentially creator-owned in how it’s approached, except for the rights, no?? Maybe Jimmy can elaborate on what market they’re going for with the title.

Really cool to see Harley stay up there. Batman Eteranl is a pretty good story, and deserving of the weekly format, IMO. Not so sure about Future’s End or the upcoming Earth 2. DOn’t know where they expect people to buy all this stuff!!!

I hope Batwoman sticks around. I personally love the places Andreyko has gone, and think Kate made a very selfless choice in the latest issue.

  11. The lack of interest in Future’s End seems to be more about the fact it features a good number of characters who were all in previously canceled New52 titles. These are characters people voted with their wallets AGAINST. They’re not eager to read about them again.

  12. I think DC’s doing it wrong with three weekly series.

All their past weekly efforts have been linchpin series that guided their entire publishing line, so in effect they were essential buys for fans of DC as a whole.

Batman Eternal clearly isn’t necessary for the DCU as a whole, and doesn’t even seem to matter much outside of Snyder’s title. If anything, it seems to be a companion to the Batman title.

Future’s End might guide the DCU as a whole, but it wasn’t really promoted that way, and its current connections and implications are not at all obvious.

And an Earth 2 title? No.

More so than ever, DC is competing against itself for reader investment.

  13. @shagamu: Or they’re just taking a month off between story arcs, which is something that Vertigo has been doing recently. I guess we’ll know which it likely is when the December solicits are released…

  14. To answer the question from Chris, we were looking to aim it at the war comics genre mixed with horror, but there was no push for it , so it came out pretty cold. we are hoping to gain readers best we can along the way since DC has committed for a bit, so we shall see. As usual, Justin and I are taking this is a different direction that most thought and it might not be what people want in the end, but the people that have read it are liking it. We shall see.

  15. Random thoughts:

    1) Relaunches. Well, they’re working out pretty well for Marvel, it was only a matter of time before DC jumped into those waters. Looks like they’re stepping their toe in the shallow side first, as opposed to cannonballing into the deep end as Marvel’s done. From the positive numbers on New Suicide Squad and Teen Titans, looks like DC will soon venture out into deeper relaunch waters.

    2) Speaking of realunches, am I the only one here who feels that DC cost itself serious coin by not relaunching Superman with a new #1 issue once John Romita Jr came aboard? In my opinion, Superman #1 with JR Jr would have sold anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 more copies than that same issue marked #32.

3)If it was sad to see the numbers of Infinity Man & Forever People, it’s downright depressing to see the numbers for Star-Spangled War Stories. It’s a fine book, I enjoyed #1 and am looking to see where this story goes, but as I’ve been saying for years: When a book is thrown out there cold with ZERO promotion from the publishing company, sales like this are what you’re going to get. So come on, folks, give this book a chance, you won’t regret it. Hell, most of you are supporting what seems to be 50 Bat books every month, find a little room for this hidden gem.

    4) Low sales on SSWS and IM&FP could be a numbers game. DC publishes two, soon to be three weekly comic books. That’s 12 issues every months—15 if that month has 5 Wednesdays. Most of us are on some kind of budget these days, and only have room for X amount of comics. With folks being tied up with the weeklies, it makes it harder for new titles/concepts to get a chance. That’s sad, but a sad reality of comic books today. That’s really sad when you think about all the quality books out there (and there’s really a lot more than you think).

    Thanks for reading this.

  16. @rob e – all good thoughts.

You are probably right about the Superman relaunch, although I have mixed emotions about DC getting into all that.

I rather have a notion that a comic with a viable concept that is well executed ought to be able to at least survive on the sales it gets from people who read the solicits every month, without requiring a ton of other promotion, but I’m not married to that idea.

I would suggest that DC’s weekly books aren’t what is preventing the smaller books from succeeding. Rather, the smaller books not succeeding is what led DC to doing more weekly books. At least, in terms of a chicken and egg scenario.

  17. “we were looking to aim it at the war comics genre”

There is no war comics genre, Jimmy. This isn’t the 1940s.

  18. I am so upset Soule is finishing up a DC. He has been their best writer of late. Swamp Thing is by far my favourite title every month. And the art on it is just amazing. I’m guessing he will stay on till its cancelled, what with it being under 20k already. Let hope there is at least another 6 months of issues!! :)
