DC Drastically Cuts Number of Subscriptions Offered Online

21401 900x1350 DC Drastically Cuts Number of Subscriptions Offered OnlineEarlier this week I had a look at DC’s now more prominently linked subscription list. Either  that list was scheduled to be updated and was lagging behind the website updates or somebody recently changed their mind.  Regardless, it would appear that someone at DC thought they were offering too many subscriptions.

The newly updated list consists of:

  • Action Comics
  • Batman
  • Detective Comics
  • Justice League
  • Batgirl
  • Batman and Robin
  • Batman: The Dark Knight
  • Catwoman T+
  • The Flash
  • Green Arrow
  • Green Lantern
  • Green Lantern Corps
  • Nightwing
  • Supergirl
  • Superman
  • Teen Titans
  • Wonder Woman
  • Green Lantern: Animated Series
  • Looney Tunes**
  • Scooby-Doo, Where are You?
  • Superman Family Adventures
  • Young Justice
There’s a button pointing out that the “main DCU” books are “rated T for teens unless noted,” but it looks like Catwoman is the only T+ book to make the cut.  For that matter, Aquaman is a top 10 title and it didn’t make the cut to be available for subscription.  Yes, I think the Aquaman not getting any respect jokes are back.  Likewise, Green Lantern: New Guardians charts higher than Green Lantern Corps on the latest estimates and Batwoman outsells Batgirl and Nightwing.
But hey, 30%-35% off those titles they do bother to offer subscriptions to.

Comments

  1. Egads! More then half the titles are Batman,Superman and Green Lantern related books! Looks like DC is finally wising up to what characters sells.

  2. Hmm, that’s funny – the two most surprising cuts from the list are Aquaman and Green Lantern: New Guardians, both edited by Pat McCallum…

  3. so glad dc has decided to screw its retailers directly. i knew archie was doing this but we have always backed dc to the hilt. looks like times are changing and the retailers do not have any friends.
we certainly don’t have any retailer associations willing to fight on our behalf.

  4. Jamie, DC and Marvel have both offered subscriptions for DECADES. What a silly thing to get upset about now.

    Re: Jamie

Also, given that the recent change to the subscription website page now offers less titles for subscription, but has added language about how there are titles they do not offer, and includes a link to a comic book store locator, it could be argued that they are actually “screwing” retailers less than they were even a few weeks ago.

  6. uthur says:

please don’t expect Jamie or any retailer to be fact based. emotional overreaction is so much more fun!

  7. The interesting thing here that might upset retailers is DC is offering over 30% to 35% off the Cover Price for subscriptions which is a much better deal then the 10% that most LCS offer. Also where it says buy now they have digital comics first, followed by subscriptions, then LCS.
So clearly DC is slowly weeding out the LCS. They are doing it so carefully most non-businessman don`t notice.
    respectfully Stam.

  8. This is interesting, and I would love to know more about the motivations behind this move. Still, I suppose I should just go start working on my “Aquaman’s all wet” jokes, just in case this foreshadows something more ominous.

  9. Mark (@Greygor) says:

I assume you only offer subscriptions to titles you expect to last 12 months or more

  10. Igmus says:

I wouldn’t take DC’s listing of digital and subscriptions before LCS’s as an indication that they’re “weeding out” comic shops!

The list comes under a “Buy Now” label, so obviously the items are ordered from quickest to slowest if you want to buy something NOW. With digital you can buy a comic almost instantly, with subscriptions you have to wait on the Post Office, and with LCS everything depends on location (if you’re looking online for your nearest comic shop, you obviously aren’t in a position to buy anything NOW.)

  11. Daniel says:

I just ordered a subscription for aquaman in February but haven’t received anything yet I wonder if they would cancel it
