C2E2 — the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo—kicks off on Friday although we’ll be there from tomorrow on to cover the preceding Diamond Retailer summit. As they’ve done in the past. ReedPOP has provided us with a text only list of panels which is easier to scan than the database driven on eon the site. Sadly, it still doesn’t include panel participants, but maybe next time.

On the plus side — very plus — this is easily the best programming for C2E2 yet, a nice diverse blend of comics, SF, gaming and social based events with a strong local component. Some people last year questioned whether C2E2 would even make it to a fourth year, but it looks like its found its footing at last.

Many thanks to Kimberly Mueller for supplying the information.

Showing vs. Telling: It’s All About Visual Literacy, Graphic Novels and the Stories their Images Tell – Learn How It’s Done.

Friday, April 26

12:15PM – 1:15PM

W476

Janet Lee (Return of the Dapper Men) and Meryl Jaffe, PhD (Using Content-Area Graphic Texts for Learning) discuss how graphic novels can be used to teach visual literacy and promote communication while inspiring students and budding graphic artists. What feelings and associations does RED or GREEN evoke? Why are some panels organized neatly on one page and are totally outrageous on others? How do you evoke the image of “dream”? With growing Internet use and technology, scholars believe we’re witnessing a great communication revolution (Kist, 2004, 2010; Dress, 2003; Jaffe & Monnin, 2012). Sales and consumption of graphic novels continue to grow, and newspapers, websites, educators, retailers and bloggers all rely heavily on graphics and images to communicate, convince, inform and teach. Visual literacy is integral to our lives and is required content for Common Core Curricula across the country as Governors mandate teaching students to create, read and comprehend visual images along with classic and non-fiction texts. Creators and consumers of messages must understand how color, font and images relay information, and how to compose and comprehend visual messages. Graphic novels offer a perfect motivating format for teaching visual literacy and effective communication. Panelists give an interactive presentation relating how artists, teachers and learners of all ages can use color, fonts, page/panel formatting and images to create powerful messages and stories. We relay how graphic novels are outstanding educational tools, and what constitutes ‘bloc-buster’ graphics and graphic novels. There will be time for audience questions, give-aways and handouts.

Archaia Entertainment Presents: Comics Storytelling and the Lost Art of 3D

Sunday, April 28

1:30PM – 2:30PM

W471

Join Creators with a special perspective on 3D storytelling in comics for an uncensored discussion of the medium’s benefits and drawbacks, as well as a wide-ranging survey of the highs and lows of 60 years of 3D comics, only at C2E2 2013! Pioneered by a cabal of industrious creators in the early 1950s, anaglyph 3D comics experienced a boom at roughly the same mid-century moment as 3D movies first appeared in cinemas nationwide. 60 years later, 2012 saw the passing of two of the field’s pioneers: comics legend Joe Kubert, one of the format’s credited inventors, and Ray Zone, the famed conversion Artist on the most notable 3D comics of the last 30 years. To pay tribute to these lost giants and celebrate the 2013 release of their ambitious, all-3D graphic novel THE JOYNERS IN 3D from Archaia, Writer R.J. Ryan (Syndrome) and New York Times bestselling Illustrator David Marquez (All-New X-Men, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) have invited a panel of creatives from across comics to dig deep into the medium’s checkered history of using 3D as a storytelling tool. The multimedia presentation will include big-screen glimpses of comics’ most famous—and most forgettable—3D projects, as well as a brief, exclusive sneak peek at Ryan & Marquez’s epic 3D melodrama, THE JOYNERS IN 3D. Moderated by Word Balloon podcast host John Siuntres.

  1. Silver Age Trivia Challenge!
    Friday, April 26
    1:45PM – 2:45PM
    Variant Stage

I highly recommend this, and not just because I know everyone involved.

Some people last year questioned whether C2E2 would even make it to a fourth year
Tell us, E.D. Hill, who were those “some people,” and what were they basing it on last year?

  2. I’m legitimately let down by the panel content this year, or at least the synopses available. One of my favorite aspects of past C2E2 shows was a greater focus on webcomics. The Cyanide and Happiness guys are going to be there, but not much else is going on in that department. I don’t really see anyone from the more highbrow part of the literary world either.
C2E2’s panel content has always been a complete departure from the entirely content-free Wizard con, but my to-do list this year is much shorter than it has been compared to previous shows.

  3. It appears that DC does not have an exhibitor booth this year. Does anyone know why this is? They do have some panels but I do not see them listed in the map or the list of exhibitors. This is a little surprising since I thought they were one of the publishers pushing for a downtown Chicago convention.

  4. Great weblog right here! Additionally your web site so much up fast!
What host are you the use of? Can I get your associate link on your
host? I want my web site loaded up as quickly as yours
    lol
