By Chris Rice

Hello, my name’s Chris, nice to meet you. For the last three years or so, I’ve been writing the indie chart under the nom de plume of Paul Mellerick, as for most of that time I was working for a certain well-known comic distributor here in the UK. They can be assured that I didn’t use any proprietary knowledge, but it still could have been seen as a conflict of interest. I’ve been in the comics retail industry for over 20 years, was comics buyer for Forbidden Planet and Gosh! Comics, and UK readers might conceivably recognise my name from the Networks column in Comics International, which I wrote for some years.

I chose the name Paul Mellerick in tribute to a friend of mine, who died 15 years ago. He was a computer gaming journalist, and actually holds a small part in the history of comics, being the man who first commissioned a piece of writing from Kieron Gillen. Incidentally Kieron was one of the few people who was aware of all of this, as I thought he might get a bit of a shock if he ever happened upon the column.

Anyway, I’m not working in comics currently, so I thought I’d come out, as it were. It wouldn’t surprise me if I end up back in comics retail at some point, but for the moment, I shall be keeping my arm in with this column. On with the show…

Pretty much as you were this month, the usual suspects punctuated by new books from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch, the Ultimates team split up for the moment, and the return of Buffy. Elsewhere the nineties’ best noir series returns and there are a few encouraging upswings in the sales of some mid-selling titles.

150 indie titles charted in the top 300, down on last month’s 155. Overall sales were up at 1,655,816, compared to last month’s 1,568,427 and the average sales this month are 11,038, up on last month’s 10,118. 23 titles went up in sales and 107 went down, with the rest made up of new entries and specials.

Image have an excellent month with an 11.38% dollar share and an 11.04% market share, while Dark Horse continue in second place with a 6.19% dollar share and 5.72% market share. IDW have a 5.29% dollar share and a 4.51% market share, Dynamite have a 2.61% dollar share and 2.56% market share and Boom! have a 1.99 % dollar share and 1.84% market share.

UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

03/2014: The Walking Dead #124 - 64,659 (+0.3%)

Everything is super-stable at the moment, although things might slow down a little, now that the TV show is off-air again.

38. The Star Wars (Dark Horse)

09/2013: The Star Wars #1 - 78,467
10/2013: The Star Wars #2 - 56,165 (-28.4%)

02/2014: -
03/2014: The Star Wars #6 - 41,237 (-3.4%)

I’m really amazed that sales have remained this high. I found it nigh-on unreadable.

45. Serenity (Dark Horse)

02/2014: Leaves on the Wind #2 - 38,630 (-18.3%)
03/2014: Leaves on the Wind #3 - 37,516 (-2.9%)

Sales settling down very well. Will Dark Horse be able to continue to resist the urge to put out 2 or 3 Serenity books, to replace the departing Star Wars license?

46. Jupiter's Legacy (Image)

04/2013: Jupiter's Legacy #1 - 105,437
05/2013: -
06/2013: Jupiter's Legacy #2 - 48,217 (-54.3%)

03/2014: Jupiter's Legacy #4 - 36,918 (-15.6%)
55. Starlight (Image)

04/2014: Starlight #1 - 34,080

Two Mark Millar books in a row, the starpower of Frank Quitely keeping Legacy just above his collaboration with the under-rated Goran Parlov, a riff on the Buck Rogers/ Flash Gordon-style space-hero.

68. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

03/2013: Star Wars #3 - 45,522

====

04/2013: Star Wars #4 - 45,019 (-1.1%)

02/2014: Star Wars #14 - 30,828 (-2.3%)
03/2014: Star Wars #15 - 29,967 (-2.8%)

No announcement yet on when the Dark Horse Star Wars titles will cease, but presumably they must be starting to develop end-strategies for these books. Still doing very respectably.

72. East of West (Image)

03/2013: East of West #1 - 49,518 (64,284)
04/2013: East of West #2 - 41,838 (-15.5%)

02/2014: -
03/2014: East of West #10 - 28,853 (-3.4%)

Slipping a bit, but still doing very well overall.

03/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #23 - 64,108

06/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #22 - 21,194 (-2.3%)

08/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #24 - 20,584 (-0.9%)

03/2013: Buffy TVS Season 10 #1 - 27,851 (+36.6%)

Buffy returns, a decent bump but likely to drop back to the same level as the last series before too long.

77. Magnus Robot Fighter (Dynamite)

03/2014: Magnus Robot Fighter #1 - 27,497

A decent launch number, below Turok’s debut last month, but not bad at all.

92. Afterlife with Archie (Archie)

10/2013: Afterlife With Archie #1 - 41,533 (47,195)
11/2013: Afterlife With Archie #2 - 19,188 (-53.8%)

02/2014: -
03/2014: Afterlife With Archie #4 - 24,165 (-0.4%)

Still doing stellar numbers, and very stable.

94. Real Heroes (Image)

03/2014: Real Heroes #1 - 23,716

Bryan Hitch launched his first solo book, to reasonable numbers. Remember he probably makes more from this than any 100,000 selling book from Marvel.

102. Sex Criminals (Image)

09/2013: Sex Criminals #1 - 37,893
10/2013: Sex Criminals #2 - 22,510 (-40.6%)

02/2014: -
03/2014: Sex Criminals #5 - 22,593 (+0.7%)

Also very stable, and receiving rave reviews. The new collection may even see a rise on the next issue.

107. Velvet (Image)

10/2013: Velvet #1 - 41,897
11/2013: -
12/2013: Velvet #2 - 25,549 (-39.0%)

02/2014: -
03/2014: Velvet #4 - 21,412 (-7.6%)

This on the other hand is not holding up quite so well, but the drops are starting to slow down.

110. Lazarus (Image)

05/2013: Lazarus #1 - 48,030
07/2013: Lazarus #2 - 27,143 (31,470)(-43.5%)

Also dropping a little quickly.

02/2014: MLP Friends Forever #2 - 20,676 (-11.5%)

A nice increase as the book heads towards the end at #24.

137. The Veil (Dark Horse)

03/2014: Veil #1 - 14,445

A new, rather odd, crime book from the increasingly prolific Greg Rucka. I’m glad to see him back on a regular basis.

138, 214. Stray Bullets (Image)

03/2014: Stray Bullets #41 - 8,297
03/2014: Stray Bullets The Killers #1 - 14,208

One of my personal highlights, the return of David Lapham’s amazing crime book. Left dangling for over a decade, the last issue of the last series is finally released alongside the first issue of the new series. I can’t recommend this series highly enough, I can still remember how blown away I was by the first issue, almost 20 years ago!

139. Manifest Destiny (Image)

Strong word of mouth is pushing up sales very well.

02/2014: Tomb Raider #1 - 18,486
03/2014: Tomb Raider #2 - 13,636 (-26.2%)

An average second-issue drop. Not especially encouraging sales though.

148. Sovereign (Image)

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. I’ve always wondered if it would be helpful or interesting to list the other titles that fit between the ones that are analyzed here. It’s nice to read what, say, Star Wars sells, but I’m more curious to see if it’s outselling Supergirl or Fantomax or what-have-you (but not have full commentary on those titles, as there are other columns on this site for them). I know there are sales charts out there, I just thought it’d be interesting to read the analysis within a bigger context.

  2. WHAT. IS. WRONG. WITH. PEOPLE. Brubaker + Epting + Rucka + Lark and THESE are the results?! Sigh… (Two of my FAVORITE titles!)

    Also dropping a little quickly.

  3. I trade wait both of those books, along with many others on this list. It’s much more economical for my wallet.

  4. Does Bryan Hitch really make more from Real Heroes than he would from the big 2? Especially before the first trade comes out and without selling it to other media? I have my doubts about that.

  5. :WHAT. IS. WRONG. WITH. PEOPLE. Brubaker + Epting + Rucka + Lark and THESE are the results?! Sigh… (Two of my FAVORITE titles!)”

I didn’t read Lazurus but I did pick up Velvet 3 & 4, so that’s where I jumped in. And it was easy to get into from there. Picked it up out of curiousity since 1970’s Monaco as a backdrop to the story can’t be all bad. I ‘ve collected a few spy(ish) comics in the past like Sable too. It’s beautifully done-the writing, art and coloring. Normally, I don’t like overly realistic art but the production values here from cover to the back page are excellent, above and beyond a $2.99 comic.

My guess on why its not catching fire is the hook and the lots of talking and conversations about stuff. Russian mobsters and finding X27 aren’t enough to keep coming back month to month. And might invite trade-waiting especially if its formatted like a TV show.

Spys in comics are hard to pull off. The Moneypenney secretary out in the field and tough as nails angle is a hard sell for me. Not sure it worked in the Skyfall movie either. Or maybe its just the skunk hairdo.. Think this series will do respectable sales in the trade. Maybe not big hit as others but a nice piece of work. Hope it pays off. One thing I think they missed is that noir and brooding don’t sing that well as elements in the spy genre. Maybe you can combine noir & horror but noir & spys, I dunno. Seems more fueled by talent than concept to me.

  6. ‘My guess on why its not catching fire is the hook and the lots of talking and conversations about stuff. Russian mobsters and finding X27 aren’t enough to keep coming back month to month.’

And why pay $2.99 when you can get far better for free off the TV. Love em or hate at least superhero books give you something not easily replicated in movies/tv.

  7. Even though we all have our favorites, the average independent title is never going to sell much these days. Comic book fans know the names Brubaker, Rucka, Lark, and Epting but the general public knows the characters from Marvel, DC, and the Walking Dead.

  8. I’m loving Lazarus and Velvet, you can’t find this kind of stuff on the tv, no matter what anyone says. TV sucks.

I’m also loving Day Men, Afterlife With Archie (Issue 3 with the dog!!!! Oh shit, what a scene! and then Archie kills his dad!!!!), loving the art on Veil which is absolutely extraordinary. Loving Alex & Ada for it’s subtle storytelling and BPRD stepped it up big time with latest arc, GO LIZ Sherman Firestarter!

Dropped the Transformers books after Dark Cybertron which was a complete clusterfuck of nothing. Lame!

  9. Yeah, I’d have to join Warren in questioning the maths of Hitch making more on REAL HEROES selling 24k against doing a top-selling Marvel book, assuming you’re just talking about revenue from the serialized publishing, not later reprints and licensing. The initial cheque from Image might be higher (the revenue minus printing costs, the Image fee and whatever else they deduct), but out of that Hitch has to pay for inking, colouring, lettering and all the artists going variant covers under whatever arrangement he has with those other creators, plus no doubt other expenses, all stuff which doesn’t come out of his page rate and royalties on a Marvel book.

Plus, of course, REAL HEROES isn’t going to continue selling anywhere near 24k for the entire run, and the numbers for an Image book selling 12k, but still with the inking/colouring/lettering expenses is a lot worse.

  10. Chris Rice, you nom de pluming sonuvabitch, this was a mighty fun column to read!
I’ve been picking up Wild Blue Yonder, but I wildbluewonder how much longer it’s going to be around. When books are this late and sales aren’t great, I don’t imagine it’s a project high on the creators’ lists.
I’m surprised by Velvets drop. But I had no idea that there were any TV shows similar to it. What are they? I did buy the first couple of Lazarus but it didn’t hook me the say way Velvet did. I think they’d both read better in trades though (as probably all of Brubakers indie stuff does).
