Walking Dead continues its reign at the top of the indie chart, if not quite at the figures it sold last month, with Saga, Buffy and surprise-hit Doctor Who/ Star Trek following up. Valiant’s latest hit, Archer and Armstrong is well up there as well. Buffy spin-off Spike, a new Star Wars title, an RPG adaptation and are the only other high charting debuts. Elsewhere, all-ages books continue to show stronger than average sales, headed-up by the bonkers Adventure Time.

131 indie books charted this month, up on last month’s 145. The bottom book sold 5,376, up on last month’s 4,187. They sold approximately 1,198,391, well down on last month’s 1,717,229. Average sales are 9,148 per book, also down on last month’s 11,842. With that in mind, last month’s figures were very distorted by Walking Dead #100, and without that comic average monthly sales would be a little up. As usual, UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Out of the 131 books, 25 went up in sales, a little less than last month, and 87 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

IDW just pip Image to top indie publisher this month, with 5.88% dollar share and a 4.64 market share, Image have a 5.75% dollar share and 5.37% market share, Dark Horse with a 4.92% dollar share and a 3.89% market share, Dynamite with a 3.19% dollar share and a 3.16% market share and Eaglemoss with 1.83% dollar share and 0.40% market share (due to the higher retail price of their magazines).

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

I’m doing something a little different this month, by starting the chart with the top twenty indie graphic novels. They have some bearing on the comics, and I think it’s interesting!

Eight of these titles are original graphic novels, five of which are Manga, a genre that has entirely disappeared from the floppy market. Another five are Walking Dead. Only three of the rest are reprinting recent material, BPRD, Prophet and the last Irredeemable collection, while four (five if you include Scott Pilgrim) are new editions of older material.

08/2012: The Walking Dead #101 - 51,732 (-85.9%)

Unsurprisingly returning to the level of the other issues in this storyline, all of which from issue 97-up re-chart. #97 sells 6,442, #98 sells 6,626, #99 sells 6,472, and #100 sells an impressive 21,987, making it the sixth best-selling indie book this month. It’s gained an average of 20,000 new readers, and I suspect most of those will stick around.

46. Saga (Image)

03/2012: Saga #1 - 37,641 (51,766)
04/2012: Saga #2 - 36,885 (43,137)(-2.0%)

07/2012: Saga #5 - 40,556 (-1.4%)
08/2012: Saga #6 - 40,584 (+0.7%)

Holding very solidly, with the first collection coming next month. This has really been a smash-hit, and a fine advertisement for self-publishing.

97. Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)

08/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #17 - 79,307

08/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #12 - 26,569 (-3.4%)

A year into the book it shouldn’t really still be shedding readers at a thousand a month. It seems a little aimless this season, with no overall arc that’s apparent, and maybe that’s filtering through into the sales.

108. Archer & Armstrong (Valiant)

08/2012: Archer & Armstrong #1 - 23,464

Another strong start, although it is noticeable that each new title is selling around five thousand copies less than the previous one. That said, this one seems to be getting strong word-of-mouth, and has been reprinted.

115. Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation (IDW)

05/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #1 - 20,940 (24,836)
06/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #2 - 19,273 (-8.0%)
07/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #3 - 21,996 (+14.1%)
08/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #4 - 22,133 (+0.6%)

The real sleeper hit of this year, other than maybe Adventure Time, I very much doubt that even IDW expected it to do this well.

121. Fatale (Image)

01/2012: Fatale #1 - 41,000
02/2012: Fatale #2 - 20,315 (-1.0%)
03/2012: Fatale #3 - 20,222 (-0.5%)
04/2012: Fatale #4 - 22,804 (+12.8%)
05/2012: Fatale #5 - 22,484 (-1.4%)
06/2012: Fatale #6 - 21,828 (-2.9%)
07/2012: -
08/2012: Fatale #7 - 21,369 (-2.1%)

Holding pretty solidly after the short break, but it seems to be settling into a standard attrition pattern. The trade is doing gangbusters, I understand.

130. Adventure Time (Boom!)

02/2012: Adventure Time #1 - 12,392 (20,915)
03/2012: Adventure Time #2 - 11,329 (20,193) (-8.6%)
04/2012: Adventure Time #3 - 17,131 (+51.2%)
05/2012: Adventure Time #4 - 20,289 (+18.4%)
06/2012: Adventure Time #5 - 20,889 (+3.0%)
07/2012: Adventure Time #6 - 19,767 (-5.4%)
08/2012: Adventure Time #7 - 19,423 (-1.7%)
140. Adventure Time Marceline & the Scream Queens (Boom!)

07/2012: Marceline & the Scream Queens #1 - 21,182
08/2012: Marceline & the Scream Queens #2 - 17,428 (-17.7%)

A smallish drop for Marceline and the main title is still doing very well. I gather that the back issues are still selling at a brisk pace, Boom would do well to keep them in print.

131. Buffy The Vampire Slayer Spike (Dark Horse)

08/2012: BTVS Spike #1 - 19,372

Blondie-Bear gets his own book, although for some reason he’s currently starring with bug aliens, which seems a little out of his comfort zone…

133. The Shadow (Dynamite)

04/2012: The Shadow #1 - 45,548
05/2012: The Shadow #2 - 21,982 (-51.7%)
06/2012: The Shadow #3 - 19,554 (-11.0%)
07/2012: -
08/2012: The Shadow #4 - 19,063 (-2.5%)

Settling down in the high teens, but likely to take a nosedive when Ennis leaves the book.

136. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing (IDW)

08/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #1 - 34,803 (39,180)

====

09/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #2 - 19,333 (-44.4%)
10/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #3 - 22,855 (+18.2%)

04/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #9 - 19,116 (28,554)(+1.8%)
04/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Archie 100 Pg Spectacular - 4,163
05/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #10 - 19,254 (+0.7%)
06/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #11 - 19,416 (+0.1%)
07/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #12 - 18,789 (-3.2%)
08/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13 - 18,342 (-2.4%)

I think this has now seen its peak, and is starting a slow drift downwards, although the success of the reprint collections show there’s a strong audience for the Turtles.

137. Spawn (Image)

07/2012: Spawn #221 - 15,801 (-47.6%)
08/2012: Spawn #222 - 18,336 (+16.0%)

Just to show the power of the Walking Dead, this issue appears to have picked up an extra 2,500 sales simply because the cover was an homage to the cover of WD #1.

139. Thief of Thieves (Image)

02/2012: Thief of Thieves #1 - 17,877
03/2012: Thief of Thieves #2 - 14,286 (-20.1%) 04/2012: Thief of Thieves #3 - 13,644 (-4.5%)
05/2012: Thief of Thieves #4 - 17,774 (+30.3%)
06/2012: Thief of Thieves #5 - 19,833 (+11.6%)
07/2012: Thief of Thieves #6 - 19,733 (-0.5%)
08/2012: Thief of Thieves #7 - 18,266 (-7.4%)

A bit of a big drop, and a new co-writer coming on board next month, this book still hasn’t really found its level.

143. X-O Manowar (Valiant)

05/2012: X-O Manowar #1 - 42,708
06/2012: X-O Manowar #2 - 21,261 (-50.2%)
07/2012: X-O Manowar #3 - 18,149 (-14.6%)
08/2012: X-O Manowar #4 - 16,882 (-7.0%)

The drops are slowing, as it finds its sales level, which I suspect will be around the 15,000 mark.

146. Angel & Faith (Dark Horse)

08/2008: After the Fall #11 - 44,905
08/2009: Angel #24 - 22,795

07/2012: Angel & Faith #12 - 16,656 (-2.3%)
08/2012: Angel & Faith #13 - 16,453 (-1.2%)

Slowly drifting down.

147. The Boys (Dynamite)

08/2007: The Boys #9 - 32,570
08/2008: The Boys #21 - 27,523
08/2009: The Boys #33 - 24,684

07/2012: The Boys #68 - 16,330 (-1.4%)
08/2012: The Boys #69 - 16,242 (-0.5%)

Only three issues to go.

148. Star Wars Darth Maul Death Sentence (Dark Horse)

07/2012: Darth Maul Death Sentence #1 - 18,579
08/2012: Darth Maul Death Sentence #2 - 16,148 (-13.1%)
151. Star Wars Darth Vader Ghost Prison (Dark Horse)

152. Star Wars Lost Tribe of the Sith Spiral (Dark Horse)

08/2012: Lost Tribe of the Sith Spiral #1 - 15,667
186. Star Wars Knight Errant (Dark Horse)

07/2012: Knight Errant Escape #2 - 12,232 (-20.8%)
08/2012: Knight Errant Escape #3 - 11,677 (-4.5%)

Darth Maul seems to be doing a little worse than Darth Vader, but still well, but the new title, Lost Tribe of the Sith, lands on the lower side of recent launches saleswise.

150. Bloodshot (Valiant)

07/2012: Bloodshot #1 - 29,224
08/2012: Bloodshot #2 - 16,024 (-45.2%)

A big drop, this is getting good word of mouth but whether it can get past its cliché guy-with-a-gun image is another matter.

154. Harbinger (Valiant)

06/2012: Harbinger #1 - 32,111
07/2012: Harbinger #2 - 17,239 (-46.3%)
08/2012: Harbinger #3 - 15,482 (-10.2%)

This isn’t settling quite as fast as X-O Manowar, it’ll probably end up a thousand or two lower.

155. Massive (Dark Horse)

06/2012: Massive #1 - 22,173
07/2012: Massive #2 - 16,600 (-25.1%)
08/2012: Massive #3 - 15,310 (-7.8%)

Brian Wood mentioned in last month’s comments that the true sales are around 2,000 higher, which would probably be UK and European sales. It’s looking like it will smooth out at around the same level as DMZ. Great book too.

158. Conan (Dark Horse)

08/2007: Conan #43 - 23,843
08/2008: The Cimmerian #2 - 25,762

12/2011: The Road of Kings #11 - 10,958 (-3.2%)

07/2012: Conan the Barbarian #6 - 15,078 (-2.0%)
08/2012: Conan the Barbarian #7 - 14,908 (-1.1%)

This seems to be flattening out, the changing artist rota seemingly not having too much affect.

160. Rocketeer Cargo of Doom (IDW)

05/2011: Rocketeer Adventures #1 - 19,927
06/2011: Rocketeer Adventures #2 - 14,912 (-25.2%)
07/2011: Rocketeer Adventures #3 - 15,062 (+1.0%)
08/2011: Rocketeer Adventures #4 - 14,749 (-2.1%)

05/2012: Rocketeer Adventures 2 #3 - 10,942 (-6.7%)
06/2012: Rocketeer Adventures 2 #4 - 10,676 (-2.4%)
07/2012: -
08/2012: Rocketeer Cargo Of Doom #1 - 14,758

This seems to be doing quite well, it’s sold out and I think it’ll do better over the run than the last Adventures series.

07/2012: Invincible #93 - 14,545 (0%)
08/2012: Invincible #94 - 14,355 (-1.3%)

A bit of a drop, but nothing to concern with #100 coming up.

164. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Micro-series (IDW)

12/2011: TMNT Micro Series #1 Raphael - 18,687
12/2011: TMNT Micro Series #2 Michelangelo - 15,930 (-14.8%)
01/2012: -
02/2012: TMNT Micro Series #3 Donatello - 15,617 (-2.0%)
03/2012: -

07/2012: TMNT Micro Series #6 Casey Jones - 14,945 (-5.2%)
08/2012: TMNT Micro Series #7 April - 14,325 (-4.1%)

Unsurprisingly the human members of the cast aren’t quite as big a draw, but these aren’t selling much behind the Turtles’ own books.

165. Pathfinder (Dynamite)

08/2012: Pathfinder #1 - 14,277

An RPG tie-in, not bad debut sales.

167. Magic The Gathering (IDW)

02/2012: Magic The Gathering #1 - 28,858
02/2012: Magic The Gathering #2 - 23,849 (-17.4%)

07/2012: -
08/2012: MTG The Spell Thief #2 - 14,007 (-10.9%)

And a CCG tie-in, also doing pretty well, if at half the sales of the first issue. It’s a five dollar book though.

174. America’s Got Powers (Image)

04/2012: America’s Got Powers #1 - 19,439
05/2012: America’s Got Powers #2 - 16,273 (-16.3%)
06-07/2012: -
08/2012: America’s Got Powers #3 - 13,393 (-17.7%)

Ouch, this book should be selling a lot better than it is. Hitch seems to have lost a bit of buzz recently, he needs a new hit…

179. Transformers Regeneration One (IDW)

07/2012: Transformers Regeneration One #81 - 15,973
07/2012: Transformers Regeneration One 100 pg Special - 4,407

07/2012: Transformers Robots In Disguise Ongoing #7 - 11,229 (-1.9%)

08/2012: Transformers Robots In Disguise Ongoing #8 – 10,940 (-2.6%)

A reasonable second-issue drop for Regeneration One, while the other two drift down.

180. Danger Girl / GI Joe (IDW)

07/2012: Danger Girl / GI Joe #1 - 16,649
08/2012: Danger Girl / GI Joe #2 - 12,022 (-27.8%)

A fairly average second issue drop.

07/2012: Hell on Earth Exorcism #2 - 10,484 (-6.5%)
08/2012: Hell on Earth Return of the Master #1 - 11,983 (+14.3%)

Only one issue this month, selling around the median average for the recent #1’s.

182. Kiss (IDW)

06/2012: Kiss #1 - 20,518
07/2012: Kiss #2 - 13,428 (-34.6%)
08/2012: Kiss #3 - 11,941 (-11.1%)

I think this still has a way to go before finding its level.

189. Mind The Gap (Image)

05/2012: Mind The Gap #1 - 20,038
06/2012: Mind The Gap #2 - 14,218 (-29.0%)
07/2012: -
08/2012: Mind The Gap #3 - 11,168 (-21.4%)

Ouch, that’s rather a stiff third issue drop, quite undeservedly so.This is an excellent book, with two central mysteries that may or may not be connected.

190. Locke & Key (IDW)

08/2010: Keys to the Kingdom #1 - 9,429
08/2011: Clockworks #2 - 7,686

05/2012: Clockworks #6 - 8,436 (+1.2%)
08/2012: Grindhouse One-shot - 11,094 (+31.5%)

I think this may be the best selling issue yet, the way sales are increasing it’s a shame that the series is drawing to its conclusion.

191. The Crow (IDW)

07/2012: The Crow #1 - 18,689
08/2012: The Crow #2 - 11,021 (-41.0%)

A fairly stiff drop, the next series actually features creator James O’Barr and so will probably sell a bit better.

192. Godzilla Half-Century War (IDW)

08/2012: Godzilla Half Century War #1 - 11,010

Selling better than the main title, this is by Orc Stain creator James Stokoe, and is proving rather popular, selling out.

195. Black Kiss 2 (Image)

08/2012: Black Kiss 2 #1 - 10,835

Banned in the UK, not that that makes any difference to this chart this month. Next month’s figures may be affected however, with US stores selling copies to the UK. Not sure it’ll be many though, I suspect on this occasion less UK stores will go into the grey market than for the likes of Doctor Who or the early TMNT comics (which were also unavailable, but for licensing reasons rather than obscenity).

196. Star Trek Ongoing (IDW)

09/2011: Star Trek Ongoing #1 - 15,943
10/2011: Star Trek Ongoing #2 - 13,198 (-17.2%)
11/2011: Star Trek Ongoing #3 - 13,296 (+0.7%)

06/2012: Star Trek Ongoing #10 - 11,007 (-1.5%)
07/2012: Star Trek Ongoing #11 - 10,932 (-0.7%)
08/2012: Star Trek Ongoing #12 - 10,635 (-2.7%)

Slowly ticking downwards, but the upcoming movie may arrest that.

198. Revival (Image)

07/2012: Revival #1 - 18,039
08/2012: Revival #2 - 10,486 (-41.9%)

A very surprising drop, considering the multiple printings and sell-outs. I think possibly retailers are being more cautious about the new Image titles beyond the first issues, after being caught out by some of the other recent launches. For every Saga or Fatale, there’s been an Alpha Girl or Peter Panzerfaust, which haven’t done as well

200, 207. Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie)

08/2012: Sonic #239 - 9,226 (+2.8%)
08/2012: Sonic #240 - 10,101 (+9.5%)

A big increase, there definitely seems to be a surge in sales with kids titles at the moment.

201. Peanuts (Boom!)

11/2011: Peanuts #0 - 22,644
01/2012: Peanuts #1 - 11,994 (-47.0%)
02/2012: Peanuts #2 - 10,584 (-11.8%)
03/2012: Peanuts #3 - 10,188 (-3.7%)

05-07/2012: -
08/2012: Peanuts v2 #1 - 9,936 (-2.7%)

This has dropped a lot of sales in a short amount of time. It’ll be interesting to see how far it’ll drop to the second issue.

Interesting. I have no idea whatsoever why these books have increased so much, Warlord in particular.

203. Lobster Johnson (Dark Horse)

01/2012: The Burning Hand #1 - 12,004
02/2012: The Burning Hand #2 - 9,837 (-18.1%)

06-07/2012: -
08/2012: Prayer of Neferu One-Shot - 9,643 (+1.4%)

Pretty stable this, although quite a bit down from the debut of the last series.

205. Michael Avon Oeming's The Victories (Dark Horse)

08/2012: Michael Avon Oeming's The Victories - 9,511

Okay sales for this sort of project. There do seem to be a lot of post-disaster superhero books around at the moment, though.

208. Mars Attacks (IDW)

06/2012: Mars Attacks #1 - 43,514
07/2012: Mars Attacks #2 - 10,744 (-75.3%)
08/2012: Mars Attacks #3 - 9,225 (-14.1%)

Far less of a drop than last month, but that’s about the best that can be said, really. There just doesn’t seem to be much appetite for the idea, same as when Topps gave it ago when the movie came out some 15 years ago.

08/2012: Crossed Badlands #11 - 9,215 (+0.1%)

Slowly trickling down, but overall this is very healthy by Avatar standards.

08/2012: Vampirella #21 - 8,594 (-3.3%)
08/2012: Vampirella Annual #2 - 5,870 (-14.1%)

Tha annual comes in some way behind the parent series. That percentage drop is taken from the previous Annual, by the way.

Not settling down at all, I’d be surprised if this series made it past 12 issues either, it’s likely to drop below the sales of that last issue next month.

The biggest drop in a while. I enjoy this series, but it frustrates me as well. Every time I think it’s going somewhere it seems to start spinning its wheels. Possibly other people are finding this.

01-07/2012: -
08/2012: Danger Girl Army of Darkness #6 - 7,868 (-4.4%)

This highlights a rather worrying habit that Dynamite have of dramatically late-shipping books. An eight-month stretch separates the last two issues of this series, and Dynamite are about to release the 10th and final issue of Green Hornet Strikes, over a year after the last issue was released. They’re allowing order adjustments, but not all retailers are going to notice, and risk being stuck with a forgotten comic that no-one cares about anymore. Sort it out, Nick Barrucci!

07/2012: Prophecy #2 - 8,844 (-20.5%)
08/2012: Prophecy #3 - 6,946 (-21.5%)

Ouch, a bigger drop than last issue, Dynamite will be expecting far better sales from their Alex Ross-led Masks, teaming their pulp-heroes, just as this one teams their fantasy characters.

Yike, a big drop for no apparent reason.

256. Jericho Season 4 (IDW)

08/2012: Jericho Season 4 #1 - 6,860

The first issue of the last season sold 7,564 back in November 2009, so this is a pretty decent number for a TV series over four years gone.

07/2012: Planetoid #2 - 7,858 (-34.8%)

Still a ways off from stabilizing.

262. It Girl & The Atomics (Image)

08/2012: It Girl & The Atomics #1 - 6,503

A slightly disappointing debut for Mike Allred’s new series. Possibly his increased Marvel profile recently may help.

263. Think Tank (Image)

08/2012: Think Tank #1 - 6,502

A rare black and white book from Image, this one’s about a genius weapons maker who suddenly finds his conscience.

08/2012: Axe Cop President O/T World #2 - 6,242 (-25.0%)

The last series ended on around 7,500 copies, so this has already fallen below that. The collections sell well though.

03/2012: The Strain #4 - 6,767 (-8.4%)
04-05/2012:
06/2012: The Strain #5 - 6,054 (-10.5%)
07/2012: The Strain #6 - 5,742 (-5.2%)
08/2012: The Strain #7 - 5,376 (-6.4%)

I’m continually confused as to why this Guillermo Del Toro series is tanking so badly. I think we may just have reached vampire fatigue level.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. “Eight of these titles are original graphic novels, five of which are Manga,”

    Well, kinda?

I mean, I don’t think it’s accurate to call manga “Original Graphic Novels”, because, of course, they HAVE been serialized, just not in this country — but the creative costs have largely been paid at this stage, and, certainly, the cost of bringing manga to the American market is just a small percentage of what a truly original GN would be.

Also, while SCOTT PILGRIM *is* an OGN, *this* edition seems a little hinky to me, being just a color reprint of that same book. But that might be hair splitting.

The interesting thing about the other two? (CLONE WARS and AVATAR) is that they’re both aimed squarely at kids.

  2. @Brian H. – I just meant OGN as “not collections of US floppies”, to be honest, but yeah you’re absolutely right on all of your points. The GN chart is a work in progress, at the moment I’m not sure whether I’ll be doing full sales analysis, or just a precis. As I said, I just think it’s interesting to see what’s selling what through Diamond. I suspect that for many of those titles, Diamond are not the primary sales market.

@Brian J. – Oops. It’s actually happened in quite a few places, wherever there’s a long title and we’ve entirely lost the Transformers figures. This is the first column on the new site with the new format, I’ll make sure all of the titles are a bit shorter next month. I’d imagine Heidi will see if she can fix it this month.

  3. “For every Saga or Fatale, there’s been an Alpha Girl or Peter Panzerfaust, which haven’t done as well…” Have you seen how much the first issue of Peter Panzerfaust is going for on ebay? Or the fact that it’s already been picked up for a BBC tv show? Sure the comic sales might not be burning up the charts, but I think it’s done really well, overall.

  4. @Shawn – I’d say that’s arguable. Yes, they’re not organising the actual printing and distribution, but they’ve made every decision regarding the book, from design, to price, to paper stock, and they’re only receiving royalties after the book has made back its cost. It’s as much self-publishing as anyone who uses a POD service, imho.

  5. @Nathan – Oh yes, certainly, it’s not unknown for comics to do better in other forms, the Men in Black comic was all but forgotten when the films were made. I was specifically talking about the comic sales though, which haven’t been that great up to now.

  6. “131 indie books charted this month, up on last month’s 145”

Are the 145 and 131 backwards or should the “up on” be “down from”?

  7. It should be down from. I usually write over the previous month’s column for the opening paragraphs to save time, I missed that bit this month.

  8. “131 indie books charted this month, up on last month’s 145. The bottom book sold 5,376, up on last month’s 4,187.”

131 this month, up from last month’s 145? typo?

  9. I find this list disappointing for independents unless you’re in a Walking Dead cheerleading squad. Only 3 books in the top 100? That won’t change the face of comics anytime soon. The Big Two barely notice any competition. Not saying these books aren’t worthy or deserve to be there , (though I I just read one of them in the top 100, and another below)…Talking about the bigger picture

What I’m baffled by is why a lot of these star writers who flourish in the big two then sideline with Image or Boom can’t just make a superhero or universe just as compelling as the one Thor lives in (zombies aside) especially when the big two stick a $3.99 and up price tags on books. Is it really that hard?

And if creator-owned these days is really just a farm team for writing movie or TV scripts as the studios take more notice. Walking Dead’s unique success seems to put blinders on the problem. The comic medium itself needs a bit more evolvement for its readership. There are talented people out there.

  10. I’m sorry to see that the Godzilla on-going isn’t doing better, but maybe the Big “G” is one of those franchises that’s better off doing series after series of mini’s…..just happy he’s out there!

Has anyone seen numbers for the Planet of the Apes Annual that came out in this month? Just wondering, I liked it and the previous on-going sold decent…..

  11. Love the sales charts, really useful analysis, but design-wise I have to say that the new layout has created a lot of dead space. There’s no need for the main column to be so narrow that information is cut off.

  12. Sorry Rick, I’ve just realised that Warlords of Mars figure is wrong, it actually sold 9,889 copies, dropping 1.1%. Sorry, I somehow accidentally put in the sales numbers for #14, I plead insanity.

  13. Why was ‘Black Kiss’ banned in the UK? I don’t know anything about the book.

I don’t know if X-O’s going to settle at 15k or not. It’s drops are still pretty large. I hope Planetoid, Debris improve in sales. And I jumped onto Prophet a little late but it’s hard not to like a book whose creative team is clearly inspired. I haven’t checked out the Dr. Who/Star Trek book but I’m thinking maybe I should!

  14. Just received the trade 2 days ago (along with Glory!) and both for $8.50 each!!! Bargain Central!! :) Still have to read them yet! :-)

  15. My favorite indy franchise, Planet of the Apes, didn’t make the Top 300??? Thats sad! :-(

I’ve especially been loving the Bechko/Hardman mini series. And Cataclysm, with AMAZING art by – Damian Couceiro, is their best work yet! Pick it up! :-)

  16. I just finished up with the most recent issue of Saga and thought I’d add how much nicer the paper stock of it is versus the Marvel and DC books. Its thick and glossy and I wonder how an indie book can do this while the Big Two are citing the needs to reduce production cost. It made me really appreciate the Image books I’m reading.

  17. Sooooo disappointing to see Matt Kindt’s fantastic MIND MGMT sales where they are. This has to be one of the smartest, most addicting and unique comics on the market right now.

I put it up there with FATALE, RACHEL RISING, and SAGA as one of the best comics out there period.

I hope the collections do drum up some sales so that Dark Horse will continue publishing it.

  18. “06/2012: Sonic Universe #41 – 7,197 (+1.7%)
    07/2012: Sonic Universe #42 – 8,061 (+12.0%)
    08/2012: Sonic Universe #43 – 6,901 (-16.8%)

Yike, a big drop for no apparent reason.”

It’s even more bizarre as it comes in the middle of a four issue arc. Perhaps the numbers for #42 were over-reported by Diamond?

  19. I had held off on reading the Massive since I thought it was a limited series and I didn’t wnat to get hooked on a good concept that was going to end in 6 months and then may never appear again. Sounds like from the chart it is an ongoing so I might need to catch up.

Image, Valiant and some of the Indy companies are getting more of my money as Marvel gets none and DC is attritioning good chunks of it.
