The Walking Dead finally becomes the top selling non Marvel/DC book in the direct market, the second True Blood book from IDW debuts lower than I’d have expected, the Garth Ennis written Jennifer Blood launches from Dynamite, and Dark Horse launches another Conan series.

Image had a dollar share of 5.31% and a unit share of 4.80%, Dark Horse had a dollar share of 5.26% and a unit share of 3.49%, IDW had a dollar share of 4.60% and a unit share of 4.14%, and Dynamite had a dollar share of 3.60% and a unit share of 3.14%.

I’ve listed every “indie” book in the top 200, every Image, Dark Horse, and IDW book (ie. “the front of Previews”) that made the charts, and a selection of others.

As always thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

                               4 year (+43.8%)

This is the first time that The Walking Dead has been the best selling non Marvel/DC book distributed to direct market comic book shops by Diamond. (Well, there was a $1 version of issue one that charted this high, but I don’t think the numbers for that issue were accurate).

The success of this book really is phenomenal and sales continue to go up almost every single month regardless of new storylines (this issue is part two). This is almost unheard of in the industry, and means that stores are consistently selling out.

Even if this book suddenly became like almost every other comic released in the industry and started reporting a 1-3% drop every issue it would still make it to at least issue 150.

The trade paperback collections also sell amazingly well, with volume one selling almost 6000 copies to comic book shops in the first two months of this year. Last year it sold over 77,000 copies in comic and bookshops.
A second series of the TV show is set to come out this fall, and will probably encourage sales even more.

91. True Blood (IDW)
07/2010: True Blood #1 - 30,296 [38,062]
08/2010: True Blood #2 - 26,419 [37,218] (-2.2%)

01/2011: -
02/2011: True Blood: Tainted Love #1 – 19,824 (-22.4%)
				6 month (-46.7%)

I’m a little surprised that this sold so poorly compared to the previous volume considering the number of reprints and reorders it had. It did ship in the last week of the month, so sales could have slipped to March. I think there are four different covers. The hardcover of the first volume had first month sales of 2,284 copies this month.

Two issues this month as the book tries to get back on schedule. The massive drop for issue 203 could be because it also shipped in the last week of the month.

This six issue miniseries seems to mark the end of the Legacy story.

The increase is probably due to advance reorders since the book is late. Still, a good sign for the series. Seven covers.

02/2011: Star Trek Infestation #2 - 10,906 (-9.8%)

This is IDW’s big “not really a crossover” event. Next month there are two more two issue miniseries, those ones featuring GI Joe and Ghostbusters. Putting out both issues of each mini in the same month seems to have paid off for IDW as the second issue drops are both quite low.

Green hornet really shows that if you launch high enough you can survive big drops for a long time.

145. Spongebob Comics (Bongo)
02/2011: Spongebob Comics #1 - 11,814

This is Bongo’s most successful comic in the direct market in ages, though I believe they are just distributing it for United Plankton Features as their name doesn’t appear on the cover. This means that this comic is probably also available on newsstands and whatever other markets to which Bongo sells their Simpsons comics.

                        5 year (+161.2%)

The increase for the first issue of this new, ongoing series seems to be strictly because of more interest in the title as both this and the previous Image number one both had two covers.
The collection of My First Maniac came out in January and sold 2,182 copies in the first two months of the year.

The Family values series was expanded from six to seven issues, and sales go up for the final issue, as happens fairy frequently when Avatar books run late.
Pyschopath is also written by David Lapham, so I’m a little surprised that issue one didn’t do better considering how consistent the last series was. However, it also shipped the last week of the month, so some copies might have slipped to April.

This is written by Jonathan Ross, a fairly major UK celebrity and sales are probably ~50% higher after including UK sales (issue one reportedly sold over 20,000 copies). It is also being released as part of Mark Millar’s Clint magazine in the UK.

This is interesting. IDW rescued this book by taking over the license from Devil’s Due for the remaining three issues. There was also a $7.99 collection of the first three issues, but that doesn’t seem to have charted.

Four issue miniseries that acts as a prequel to the American version of the film. Interestingly the writer of the novel which this film is based on didn’t want this comic to be made, but apparently was misinformed as to the nature of the contract he signed.

Four issue miniseries written and drawn by John Byrne, but there doesn’t seem to be much interest in this as a franchise. I’m wondering if a John Byrne miniseries about dinosaurs that wasn’t related to Jurassic Park would sell better.

Sold out of the first printing, and a second printing was released. I’m not sure if this is reprints of the webcomic or original material.

Six issue miniseries by the writer of Choker. This was the lowest regularly priced non Marvel/DC title in the top 300 this month.

==========

Just a reminder, all numbers on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month. These numbers don’t include sales through Diamond UK (I don’t know if they include sales to Europe/Asia/etc.). They are frequently low.

  1. Jennifer Blood – “New Garth Ennis series. This issue has eight different covers.”

Vampirella – “Settling down. There are eight covers.”

Warlord of Mars – “Seven Covers.”

Gotta love that Dynamite Publishing, eh? Soul-crushing 90s gimmicks and excess for all!

  2. Hey, its not just Dynamite. Marvel average around 10 covers for each first issue. haha….

The way comic sales are decreasing every year. It won’t be long before The Walking Dead is the number one comic period. ;)

  3. Guess we can see why Dark Horse is laying people off now. Looking at these numbers, I’d say they probably need to look at a change in their publishing strategy.

  4. “Guess we can see why Dark Horse is laying people off now. Looking at these numbers, I’d say they probably need to look at a change in their publishing strategy.”

If that publishing strategy is “produce comics people are interested enough to buy”, b/c I’m just not seeing it on their end…

  5. Meh, Who cares how many covers Dynamite puts out?
If it keeps Warlord of Mars and the Red Sonja books going for me to continue to enjoy, then it’s all good. I only buy the cover I like so the rest don’t make a differance to me.

  6. Sorry to see Jim Shooter’s stuff failing, as I particularly like the Doc Solar revival…. Maybe too many series was an overreach?

And my LCS couldn’t get me Atomic Robo, nor Time Bomb issue 3. What’s up with the distribution problems?

  7. Stew, Archie and Reggie run for Class President. Betty scores a meet and greet with Archie and Obama, while Trula Twist does something similar with Reggie and Palin. Those two campaign managers then go viral with the “endorsements”, which causes both Barack and Sarah to visit Riverdale.

If you think that’s crazy, go check out the “Life With Archie” magazine, which continues the storylines started in the “Archie Marries…” mini-series. Quite good! Think “Archie soap opera”…

  8. “Sorry to see Jim Shooter’s stuff failing, as I particularly like the Doc Solar revival…. Maybe too many series was an overreach?”

My guess is there is ZERO interest out there for these properties. From the sales figures as I don’t think I’m wrong…

  9. Variant covers “matter” because comic stores get stuck with stock they can’t sell, which leads to stores closing, which leads to fans dropping books, which leads to smaller print-runs, which leads to more expensive comics, which leads to fewer comics bought per customer, which leads to comics getting canceled and the industry contracting.

  10. Why would any store order more comics than they can sell? If they are ordering so many copies of a title so they can get that super extra special variant cover without having a specific customer that has pre-paid/requested it at a price that will cover the cost of the other issues purchased, then that’s just bad business. Nobody says you have to order every cover and Dynamites variants in particular are usually and even mix.

  11. Interesting that the anniversary issues of Invincible and Walking Dead had major jumps, while the Boys #50 makes nary a ripple. Something else Kirkman is doing right?
