walking dead 118By Paul Mellerick

We’re back roughly on time, later than the DC or Marvel columns, but I’m afraid it probably always will be, as there are twice as many titles to cover. You may notice that I’m not commenting on some of the titles towards the bottom of the chart anymore; Heidi suggested this when I started writing the column, but I wanted to be as complete as possible. Sadly time constraints will now enforce that, but at the moment I’m doing everything in the top 250!

Things are fairly as you were this month, Walking Dead, Star Wars and My Little Pony at the top, joined by Serenity now, with Dynamite’s Turok the highest new entry, followed by a new Tomb Raider book and some new Image books. Elsewhere, things still looking a little grim, lots of books falling faster than comfortable. Additionally a licensing ruling has had a chilling effect on a handful of licensed kids books, and could have a wider fallout.

155 indie titles charted in the top 300, up on last month’s 150. Overall sales were down again at 1,568,427, compared to last month’s 1,599,348 and the average sales this month are 10,118, down on last month’s 10,662. 17 titles went up in sales and 125 went down, with the rest made up of new entries and specials.

Image keep top publisher position with an 8.88% dollar share and a 7.85% market share, while Dark Horse snatch a rare second place with a 5.59% dollar share and 6.61% market share. IDW have a 5.00% dollar share and a 6.01% market share, Dynamite have a 3.40% dollar share and 3.51% market share and Boom! have a 1.94 % dollar share and 2.05% market share.

UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

02/2014: The Walking Dead #121 - 65,244 (-0.1%)
02/2014: The Walking Dead #122 - 64,810 (-0.6%)

Really very solid this month, and the two issues both creep into the top ten due to a lack of big releases from the big two.

33. The Star Wars (Dark Horse)

09/2013: The Star Wars #1 - 78,467
10/2013: The Star Wars #2 - 56,165 (-28.4%)
11/2013: The Star Wars #3 - 50,346 (-10.4%)
12/2013: The Star Wars #4 - 47,292 (-6.1%)
12/2013: The Star Wars #0 - 40,531
01/2014: The Star Wars #5 - 42,686 (-9.7%)

Still dropping quite fast, but also still selling very well indeed.

42. Serenity (Dark Horse)

01/2014: Leaves on the Wind #1 - 47,285 (54,392)
02/2014: Leaves on the Wind #2 - 38,630 (-18.3%)

A decent second-issue drop, and the first issue picks up another 7,107 copies sold.

64. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

02/2013: Star Wars #2 - 46,063

====

03/2013: Star Wars #3 - 45,522 (-1.2%)

11/2013: Star Wars #11 - 34,227 (-5.0%)
12/2013: Star Wars #12 - 33,093 (-3.3%)
01/2013: Star Wars #13 - 31,543 (-4.7%)
02/2013: Star Wars #14 - 30,828 (-2.3%)

Standard attrition. Y’know, there’s no reason that Wood couldn’t continue this storyline over at Marvel, he’s already doing a fair bit of work for them.

65. Turok, Dinosaur Hunter (Dynamite)

02/2014: Turok Dinosaur Hunter #1 - 30,722

An excellent launch for the first of Dynamite’s Gold Key titles. Expect a real big drop next month.

73. My Little Pony (IDW)

02/2014: My Little Pony #16 - 26,942 (-1.9%)
02/2014: My Little Pony 100 Penny Press #1 - 21,957 (-1.9%)

Holding pretty steady this month for a change, while a dollar reprint of the first issue does exceptionally well.

84. Black Science (Image)

11/2013: Black Science #1 - 40,873
12/2013: Black Science #2 - 20,151 (-50.7%)
01/2014: Black Science #3 - 23,965 (-18.9%)
02/2014: Black Science #4 - 25,713 (+7.3%)

Sales continue going up from the second issue, which hasn’t happened since the early days of Saga. Good book too.

97. Lazarus (Image)

05/2013: Lazarus #1 - 48,030
07/2013: Lazarus #2 - 27,143 (31,470)(-43.5%)

12/2013: Lazarus #5 - 22,695(-4.2%)
02/2014: Lazarus #6 - 21,198(-6.6%)

Dropping a little quickly, but still Rucka’s biggest indie hit to date. Again, a great read.

98. Deadly Class (Image)

01/2014: Deadly Class #1 - 34,572
02/2014: Deadly Class #2 - 21,159 (-38.8%)

01/2014: MLP Friends Forever #1 - 23,370
02/2014: MLP Friends Forever #2 - 20,676 (-11.5%)

Holding up very well.

111. Tomb Raider (Dark Horse)

02/2014: Tomb Raider #1 - 18,486

Gail Simone brings us a slightly darker Lara Croft, following on from the recent excellent console game.

117. Revenge (Image)

02/2014: Revenge #1 - 17,362

I love Jonathan Ross, and Ian Churchill, but this is an awful book. Too silly to be serious and not funny enough to be a pastiche.

123. Fuse (Image)

02/2014: Fuse #1 - 15,957

I’m a sucker for a decent police book, and this is very decent indeed, set on a Babylon 5-esque space station.

125. The Manhattan Projects (Image)

02/2013: The Manhattan Projects #9 - 17,229

====

03/2013: The Manhattan Projects #10 - 17,028 (-1.2%)

01/2014: -
02/2014: The Manhattan Projects #18 - 15,076 (-3.6%)

Slipping a bit these last few months, after a year or so of relative stability.

127. Undertow (Image)

02/2014: Undertow #1 - 14,859

A really interesting sci-fi book, lovely artwork too.

129. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW)

01/2014: TMNT #30 - 14,979 (-3.6%)
02/2014: TMNT #31 - 14,684 (-2.0%)

Drifting downwards.

130. Legenderry (Dynamite)

12/2013: Legenderry #1 - 27,174
02/2014: Legenderry #2 - 14,570 (-46.4%)

Quite a drop, but average for a Dynamite book.

01/2014: Adventure Time 2014 Special - 13,388

A bit less of a drop this month.

135. Apocalypse Al #1 (Image)

01/2014: Fatale #19 - 15,725 (-2.7%)
02/2014: Fatale #20 - 13,862 (-11.8%)

Heading into the home stretch with a slightly confusing drop. Why bother collecting nineteen issues of a series, only to drop the last five issues?

139. Manifest Destiny (Image)

11/2013: Manifest Destiny #1 - 17,371
12/2013: Manifest Destiny #2 - 12,801 (-26.3%)

01/2014: Cry of Shadows #2 - 13,920 (-12.2%)
02/2014: Cry of Shadows #3 - 13,111 (-5.8%)

Starting to level out, but at a far lower level than earlier series.

144, 154. X-Files Conspiracy (IDW)

01/2014: X-Files Conspiracy #1 - 15,576
01/2014: Conspiracy Ghostbusters #1 - 11,286
02/2014: Conspiracy TMNT #1 - 13104
02/2014: Conspiracy Transformers #1 - 11,897

I have no idea how Mulder & Scully interact with Turtles or Robots, but a relatively healthy amount of people seem to want to find out.

145. Star Wars Legacy (Dark Horse)

03/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #1 - 21,600

02/2014: God Is Dead #6 - 12,852 (+8.0%)
02/2014: God Is Dead #7 - 12,008 (-6.6%)

The drops arrest a bit, with a jump and drop, as Jon Hickman leaves the book and Mike Costa goes solo on the script.

02/2014: Red Sonja Berserker - 5,810

Both series of Red Sonja launched at around 30-32,000 copies. It took 42 issues of that previous series before sales dropped this low. A one-shot doesn’t fare too well.

150. Star Wars Dawn of The Jedi (Dark Horse)

Starting to look a little terminal. New creative team probably needed to save the day.

12/2013: Twilight Zone #1 - 21,723
01/2014: Twilight Zone #2 - 11,537 (-46.9%)

01/2014: Adventure Time Flip Side #1 - 13,372

02/2014: Cryptozoic Man #4 - 11,291 (+5.5%)

I would guess this increase is down to the creative team’s central roles on Comic Book Men.

161. Sons of Anarchy (Boom!)

168. Mercenary Sea (Image)

Plunging. It was a bit of a damp squib plotwise, to be honest.

172. The Bunker (Oni)

02/2014: The Bunker #1 - 10,378

Josh Fialkov’s time-travel web-comic comes to print, and does pretty well. It’s really good too, and is getting some excellent word-of-mouth.

02/2014: Samurai Jack #5 - 9,989 (-4.4%)

Banned in the UK! Actually it’s just one of those tedious licensing things, a whole swathe of books have been pulled from the UK shelves over conflicting licenses. Most of the books affected sell south of 10,000 copies a month, so you would have to imagine some of those titles could be threatened by the loss of those sales. It’s likely that these books will spike upwards a little in the short-term though, as US accounts that provide the grey market with books increase their sales.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. X-Files Conspiracy follows around The Lone Gunmen, so them checking in on the Turtles and robots makes much more sense. Not a great title, though. I was really disappointed with it.

Sorry to see Quantum and Woody dropping like that, it’s terrific. The entire Valiant line seems to be slipping. I like their comedy stuff but haven’t taken to their superhero stuff at all.

Good to see Black Science, Manifest Destiny, and some other titles stabilize. Lots of good stuff out right now.

  2. GHOSTBUSTERS: “A little boost, possibly due to the increased attention Harold Ramis’ passing brought to the title.”

That’s a joke, right? You’re not really suggesting that Harold Ramis passing away on February 24th could have had any effect on the orders for the one remaining ship date of the month, which had already been picked and invoiced by Diamond by that date.

  3. I wonder at what level Valiant starts cancelling books….some have sunk bad. I personnally read several titles and enjoy them. The problem nowadays for long time fans is thats its getting less and less tempting to pick up new material as most new titles won’t reach issue 25; even Marvel and DC have to relaunch books over and over to keep some interest in them.

  4. I’m a little surprised by your “banned in the UK” comment. When you say that, do you mean banned in Europe? I’ll have to chekc it out but I live in France and I’am reading for exemple Regular Show (one of the funniest book ever and I have never see the show) in floppies and – I may be wrong, I’ll check it- , usually french shops use Diamond UK as their provider. That seems weird that Diamong UK would sell books they can’t sell in their own country.

  5. RE: “Banned in the UK! Actually it’s just one of those tedious licensing things, a whole swathe of books have been pulled from the UK shelves over conflicting licenses. Most of the books affected sell south of 10,000 copies a month, so you would have to imagine some of those titles could be threatened by the loss of those sales. It’s likely that these books will spike upwards a little in the short-term though, as US accounts that provide the grey market with books increase their sales.”

My understanding is that for several titles a separate company in the UK holds exclusive rights for printing licensed material, usually Titan and Panini UK. These are separate agreements from the rest of Europe, and there are loopholes that can be used to get around them. Usually this means a US direct market comic supplier selling directly to a UK comic supplier, which is why comics such as IDW’s Doctor Who were available in Forbidden Planet as their US arm supplied them.

If there are no exclusive licensing deals in other territories in Europe then Diamond UK has no problems supplying the titles.

  6. Tomb Raider has to be a fairly disappointing launch for Dark Horse. I have to believe they were expected better first issue numbers.
With that low of a launch and the falling numbers on Red Sonja, is the bloom off the Gail Simone rose? That would be disappointing if true. Though I have to say that I was not very impressed with her first arc on Red Sonja and the first issue of Tomb Raider really did nothing for me (truth be told — I didn’t have much interest in the Tomb Raider comic going in and only bought it because I generally like Gail’s work, but it was going to be a hard sell for me anyway).

  7. Image has a lot of good titles, but I cancelled all of them and waiting for the trades.

I have no way of knowing how many others have done this, but I hope they continue publishing them, even though the sales drop. I strongly believe that the trade sales will provide them with the numbers to do that.

    Fingers crossed.

  8. Glad to see Godzilla: Rulers of Earth is holding strong! It’s great to see the “indy” titles holding their own against the big 2….especially in March (look forward to that chart!).

  9. I wish a comic book company would come along with some really great titles that also carried great creative teams, and didn’t fall into all the Big Two traps. Valiant was really looking great there at the beginning, but they’ve fell into the same traps that everyone has. Events and crossovers, and endless creative team changes. I was loving their books, but have dropped all but Shadowman and Archer and Armstrong. And even Archer, I passed on this recent Bloodshot crossover story. And it looks like Shadowman might be stealth cancelled (due to this weird mini taking over for the title, that’s about to begin.)

Lazurus’ sales number should NOT be that low. What’s the deal? That book is so excellent. I’m just shocked.

Brian Wood can continue on Star Wars over at Marvel, as long as they get a NON-cartoony artist on that book. I’ve been “dealing” with the art on that title since it started. I loved Marvel’s old Ron Frenz/ Tom Palmer art on their SW title.

  10. Brian Wood should continue with Star Wars at Marvel but that would require Marvel to think that was actually a good idea as well as letting John Ostrander continue telling stories. But Marvel is like Vince McMahon in this case. If they don’t come up with it themselves, they’re not really going to acknowledge that anything else ever previously existed.

It’s why I don’t expect to ever see much of DH’s backlist pop up at Marvel. They won’t want to bother to reprint stuff they didn’t come up with themselves.

  11. “It’s why I don’t expect to ever see much of DH’s backlist pop up at Marvel. They won’t want to bother to reprint stuff they didn’t come up with themselves.”

There was just a nice big Muppets omnibus that Marvel put out a few weeks ago.

  12. majorjoe, true about that but wonder if they would have done that if they hadn’t released the last Landridge arc.

  13. Just sittin’ here wonderin’ what is says about me that my three favorite titles at the moment are:
Rat Queens is “Still slipping a little fast,…”
Satellite Sam is “Shedding sales at a dreadful rate.”
    and
MND MNGNT is below the comment receiving fold and selling less than 5,000 copies.

Each is very different than anything else on stands and each has been a great read.

  14. Lazarus is the best book being published.
It is a great time to be reading non-Big 2 books. There are a ton of high-concept books that are floating my boat right now.
