For a rare change we get the number one book this month, as Walking Dead #100 breaks records all over the place. Saga and Buffy are still doing decent numbers, while the third Valiant relaunch, Bloodshot does very well too. Elsewhere, Adventure Time and the Trek / Who crossover continue to punch above their weight, while new licensed Transformers and Crow titles launch strongly for IDW.

145 indie books charted this month, up on last month’s 135. The bottom book sold 4,187, up on last month’s 3,302. They sold approximately 1,717,229, up on last month’s 1,344,491, the difference being almost entirely made up of Walking Dead #100. Average sales are 11,842 per book, also up on last month’s 9,959, but without Walking Dead it would have been 9,448. As usual, UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Out of the 145 books, 27 went up in sales, a little less than last month, and 90 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Unsurprisingly Image are number one again this month of the indie publishers, with a whopping 9.42% dollar share and a 9.39 market share, IDW with 6.61% dollar share and 4.51% market share, Dark Horse with a 4.51% dollar share and a 3.49% market share (weirdly identical to last month), Dynamite with a 2.77% dollar share and a 2.64% market share and Boom with 1.38% dollar share and 1.30% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

06/2012: The Walking Dead #99 - 55,710 (+3.0%)
07/2012: The Walking Dead #100 - 366,051 (+557.1%)

An unbelievable sales achievement, the best selling black and white title in at least twenty years, and the best selling indie title since Darkness #11 some 13 years ago. Obviously the book had 8 regular covers, and the chromium cover sold a further 30,969 copies at $9.99 each, which I’ve included in the total above. Surprisingly none of the collections chart in the top ten, but that’s as much due to other strong releases, and all of the softcover collections chart at some point in the 300.

44. Saga (Image)
03/2012: Saga #1 - 37,641 (51,766)
04/2012: Saga #2 - 36,885 (43,137)(-2.0%)

06/2012: Saga #4 - 41,143 (+5.8%)
07/2012: Saga #5 - 40,556 (-1.4%)

A tiny drop, but nothing to be remotely concerned about. I understand all of the individual issues are still selling strongly in their current printings, and the first collection is due relatively soon.

77. Bloodshot (Valiant)
07/2012: Bloodshot #1 - 29,224

A good start for Valiant’s third launch, a little below the first two, but it’s receiving strong word-of-mouth, I understand.

83. Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)
07/2007: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #5 - 100,830
07/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #16 - 82,031

07/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #11 - 27,490 (-1.4%)

Classic standard attrition, while the first collection of the new season charts at number four, with sales of 5,071.

100. Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation (IDW)
05/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #1 - 20,940 (24,836)
06/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #2 - 19,273 (-8.0%)
07/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #3 - 21,996 (+14.1%)

A big increase, this series appears to have performed well above expectations, selling far more than either property’s own books.

102. Adventure Time Marceline & the Scream Queens (Boom!)
07/2012: Marceline & the Scream Queens #1 - 21,182

110. Adventure Time (Boom!)
02/2012: Adventure Time #1 - 12,392 (20,915)
03/2012: Adventure Time #2 - 11,329 (20,193) (-8.6%)
04/2012: Adventure Time #3 - 17,131 (+51.2%)
05/2012: Adventure Time #4 - 20,289 (+18.4%)
06/2012: Adventure Time #5 - 20,889 (+3.0%)
07/2012: Adventure Time #6 - 19,767 (-5.4%)

Both books doing very well indeed, with AT’s popular vampire character (she drinks red, not blood) beating the parent book with her first issue.

111. Thief of Thieves (Image)
02/2012: Thief of Thieves #1 - 17,877
03/2012: Thief of Thieves #2 - 14,286 (-20.1%)
04/2012: Thief of Thieves #3 - 13,644 (-4.5%)

06/2012: Thief of Thieves #5 - 19,833 (+11.6%)
07/2012: Thief of Thieves #6 - 19,733 (-0.5%)

Holding its own very well as it approaches the end of the first arc.

114. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing (IDW)
08/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #1 - 34,803 (39,180)
09/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #2 - 19,333 (-44.4%)

06/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #11 - 19,416 (+0.1%)
07/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #12 - 18,789 (-3.2%)

A bit of a drop this month, as possibly the shine starts to fade from the relaunch.

115. The Crow (IDW)
07/2012: The Crow #1 - 18,689

Whilst maybe not as popular as during its nineties heyday, this still launches very well. I’m not sure if there’s any other series that has spread so well from only five issues ever produced by the creator.

116. Star Wars Darth Maul Death Sentence (Dark Horse)
07/2012: Darth Maul Death Sentence #1 - 18,579

122. Star Wars Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead (Dark Horse)
04/2012: Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead #1 - 25,344
05/2012: Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead #2 - 18,544 (-26.8%)
06/2012: Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead #3 - 17,813 (-3.9%)
07/2012: Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead #4 - 17,526 (-1.6%)

133. Star Wars Darth Vader Ghost Prison (Dark Horse)
05/2012: Darth Vader Ghost Prison #1 - 22,026
06/2012: Darth Vader Ghost Prison #2 - 16,858 (-23.5%)
07/2012: Darth Vader Ghost Prison #3 - 16,332 (-3.1%)

159. Star Wars Knight Errant (Dark Horse)
08/2011: Knight Errant Deluge #1 - 15,448
09/2011: Knight Errant Deluge #2 - 12,767 (-17.3%)
10/2011: Knight Errant Deluge #3 - 11,937 (-6.5%)
11/2011: Knight Errant Deluge #4 - 11,407 (-4.4%)

06/2012: Knight Errant Escape #1 - 15,449 (+43.0%)
07/2012: Knight Errant Escape #2 - 12,232 (-20.8%)

The Darth Maul book launches well, albeit somewhat below the Darth Vader and Boba Fett titles. All three are well above Knight Errant, showing that fans seem to prefer the villains to the heroes.

117. The Manhattan Projects (Image)
03/2012: The Manhattan Projects #1 - 17,955 (23,168)
04/2012: The Manhattan Projects #2 - 15,697 (-12.6%)
05/2012: The Manhattan Projects #3 - 18,001 (+14.7%)
06/2012: The Manhattan Projects #4 - 18,544 (+3.0%)
07/2012: The Manhattan Projects #5 - 18,398 (-0.8%)

Holding very steady, with the first collection due in September.

119. X-O Manowar (Valiant)
05/2012: X-O Manowar #1 - 42,708
06/2012: X-O Manowar #2 - 21,261 (-50.2%)
07/2012: X-O Manowar #3 - 18,149 (-14.6%)

Still a little ways off finding its level, which I suspect will be around the mid-teens.

120. Revival (Image)
07/2012: Revival #1 - 18,039

A very strong start for Image’s sort-of-zombie book, drawn by The Waiting Place’s Mike Norton.

124. Harbinger (Valiant)
06/2012: Harbinger #1 - 32,111
07/2012: Harbinger #2 - 17,239 (-46.3%)

A big drop, but in line with X-O Manowar, it’ll be a few months before we get a better idea of where sales will settle.

129, 247. Wonderland (Zenescope)
07/2012: Wonderland #1 - 16,909
07/2012: Wonderland Annual 2012 - 6,199

Zenescope’s best selling comic ever, apparently, and it’s been optioned for TV too. Hopefully this means they can sort out these payment issues they’ve been having with some of their creators…

130. Angel & Faith (Dark Horse)
07/2008: After the Fall #10 - 47,889

06/2012: Angel & Faith #11 - 17,044 (-0.9%)
07/2012: Angel & Faith #12 - 16,656 (-2.3%)

A slightly larger than normal drop, but nothing to be worried about. A crossover with Buffy would probably help a bit.

131. Danger Girl / GI Joe (IDW)
07/2012: Danger Girl / GI Joe #1 - 16,649

Not a bad debut for this sort of project.

132. Massive (Dark Horse)
06/2012: Massive #1 - 22,173
07/2012: Massive #2 - 16,600 (-25.1%)

A slightly larger than normal second-issue drop, but I suspect it may have been a little under-ordered.

134. The Boys (Dynamite)
07/2007: -
07/2008: The Boys #20 - 27,571
07/2009: The Boys #32 - 25,231

06/2012: The Boys #67 - 16,567 (+0.3%)
07/2012: The Boys #68 - 16,330 (-1.4%)

Only four issues to go to the end.

07/2009: Chew #2 - 6,735

06/2012: Chew #27 2nd Helping Ed - 11,262
07/2012: Chew Secret Agent Poyo #1  - 15,982

This one-shot for the titular super-powered chicken sells well above the regular title. Go figure.

137, 293. Transformers Regeneration One (IDW)
07/2012: Transformers Regeneration One #81 - 15,973
07/2012: Transformers Regeneration One 100 pg Special - 4,407

A stronger launch than the two regular titles, this continues from the Marvel series of the eighties, with the same creative team. There’s obviously a good audience for this sort of book, and it’s been a sell-out for IDW. The 100 page special collects the final five issues of the Marvel run.

06/2012: Spawn 20th Anniversary Coll Special #1 - 6,546

A predictable drop-off after the anniversary issue, but still a few thousand copies above where it was before.

07/2007: Conan #42 - 24,288
07/2008: The Cimmerian #1 - 31,296

155. Kiss (IDW)
06/2012: Kiss #1 - 20,518

Going up slightly again, this seems locked in the mid-8,000’s.

200. Axe Cop (Dark Horse)
07/2012: Axe Cop President O/T World #1 - 8,320

Drawn by Ethan Nicolle, and written by his eight-year old brother Malachai, this is spectacularly popular as a web-comic. Not my cup of tea, to be honest, but selling pretty well.

201. Kirby Genesis (Dynamite)

05-06/2012: -
07/2012: Kirby Genesis #8 - 8,257 (-8.4%)

Sales have halved on this book in less than six issues, and the spin-off series are vanishing into oblivion. I think the whole line has been quietly cancelled, nothing’s been solicited since March.

 203. Rachel Rising (Abstract)

06/2012: -
07/2012: Rachel Rising #9 - 8,194 (+1.1%)

A small increase, and in fact selling a little more than the second issue, overall very stable.

204. Lord of the Jungle (Dynamite)
01/2012: Lord of the Jungle #1 - 25,212
02/2012: Lord of the Jungle #2 - 10,525 (-58.3%)

07/2012: Lord of the Jungle #6 - 8,169 (-6.8%)

Although it looked like it might be stablising, it drops quite a bit again this month.

Two kid’s titles showing a strong upward surge in sales.

207. Battle Beasts (IDW)
07/2012: Battle Beasts #1 - 8,041

A cult toy-series from the late 80’s, that briefly was a part of the Transformers universe. Not amazing sales, but probably what you’d expect.

209. Baltimore (Dark Horse)
08/2011: Baltimore Curse Bells #1 - 10,797
09/2011: Baltimore Curse Bells #2 - 8,988 (-16.8%)

07/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics #3 - 7,900 (-9.3%)

The reprint series starts settling down, but probably a few months till we know where it’ll stabilize.

Looks like the addition of Storm Shadow to the roster hasn’t helped much, as it takes a solid nose-dive.

06/2012: -
07/2012: Jennifer Blood #14 - 7,889 (-1.4%)
07/2012: Jennifer Blood Annual #1 - 6,068

Possibly an indication of sales levelling out, which is good, as I’m thoroughly enjoying the direction that Al Ewing is taking this book in. Ms Blood is now absolutely, unequivocably, the villain of this title.

213. Planetoid (Image)
06/2012: Planetoid #1 - 12,057
07/2012: Planetoid #1 - 7,858 (-34.8%)

A rather hefty drop, but I’m hearing good word-of-mouth, and it wouldn’t surprise me if sales went up a little next month.

214. Ghostbusters Ongoing (IDW)
09/2011: Ghostbuster Ongoing #1 - 16,716
10/2011: Ghostbuster Ongoing #2 - 9,514 (-43.1%)

06/2012: Creator Owned Heroes #1 - 12,778
07/2012: Creator Owned Heroes #2 - 7,626 (-40.3%)

A large second-issue drop, but still doing quite well for an anthology of new stories.

220. Cobra Ongoing (IDW)

====
08/2011: -

06/2012: -

Ouch, quite a large drop considering it was solid last month.

The main book is fairly stable, but the other two aren’t quite as table as Dynamite would like, you’d think.

07/2012: Dark Horse Presents #14 - 6,448 (-9.6%)

A big drop this month, to it’s lowest point so far, but with an eight dollar cover-price this is probably still doing fairly well for DH.

242. Green Hornet (Dynamite)

07/2012: Green Hornet #26 - 6,413 (-3.4%)

It’s dropped almost 2,000 copies over the last 6 issues, surely not much longer for this title. That said, the upcoming Masks, teaming the Hornet with The Shadow and The Spider might help things.

Launching below the last series, possibly diminishing returns here.

06/2012: Garfield #2 - 7,452 (-25.9%)

06/2012: The Lone Ranger #6 - 5,830 (-3.5%)
07/2012: The Lone Ranger #7 - 5,762 (-1.2%)

Not sure if these sales justify a spin-off, but I guess they’re looking forward to a collection to sell when the film comes out next year.

255. Pantha (Dynamite)
06/2012: Pantha #1 - 8,341

Maybe finally stabilizing, just in time for Garth Ennis to leave the book after the next issue, with current artist Mike Wolfer taking over.

257. Hero Worship (Avatar)
07/2012: Hero Worship #1 - 5,994

Co-written by Avengers scriptwriter Zak Penn, this seems to have gone under the radar a bit.

06/2012: -
07/2012: Ferals #6 - 5,883 (+4.6%)

A bit of an increase for Dave Lapham’s werewolf book.

260. Irresistible (Zenescope)
07/2012: Irresistible #1 - 5,843

A poor schlub gets cursed to become irresistible to women. Not much of a curse, you might think, but what happens when every woman will do anything to get you…

262. The Strain (Dark Horse)
12/2012: The Strain #1 - 16,023

Really not stabilizing at all, I’m not sure if people have just got bored of slightly generic horror comics.

05/2012: Mind MGMT #1 - 7,537
06/2012: Mind MGMT #2 - 5,566 (-26.2%)

A slightly larger than average drop, but this was always going to be a book with a small audience, and will no doubt fare better once collected.

A huge drop, but the first issue was a dollar-book. It’s getting great word-of-mouth, and Spurrier’s upcoming role on the X-Men books might give it a boost.

Both series end, to be replaced by a single mini-series, Cataclysm. Real shame this isn’t selling better, all of Boom’s PoTA books have been excellent so far.

I thought there were going to be 2 new mini-series, but was wrong, this is a series of 5 one-shots that lead into volume 4 next year.

288. Concrete Three Uneasy Pieces One Shot (Dark Horse)
07/2012: Concrete Three Uneasy Pieces One Shot - 4,480

A rare Concrete comic, collecting the stories from Dark Horse Presents.

Doomed, two more issues solicited but then that’s it, I think.

297. Enormous One Shot (Image)
07/2012: Enormous One Shot - 4,269

Enormous in both name and size, this has done quite well considering its ten dollar price point.

Last month missed the chart, as it drops into oblivion.

300. Fatima The Blood Spinners (Dark Horse)
06/2012: Fatima The Blood Spinners #1 - 6,690
07/2012: Fatima The Blood Spinners #2 - 4,187 (-37.4%)

Beto Hernandez’ new pulp title from Dark Horse, not doing great numbers but will no doubt do alright in collected form.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. Re: Massive #2 “I suspect it may have been a little under-ordered”.

I bought #1-3 last week and #2 was indeed a bit harder to find than #1 and #3

  2. I was under the impression that Planet of the Apes – Cataclysm was an ongoing? Could be wrong there.

Either way its a real shame the previous series was cancelled. It was excellent, with a consistent team producing good comics on a regular monthly schedule… Hmmm something the big two could learn from me thinks.

  3. Planetoid is awesome! I’m loving the current batch of indie books, so much so that I’m dropping Marvel and DC books left and right to pick them up.

  4. I thought those Massive #2 numbers were oddly low so I checked with sales dept at Dark Horse and the number here is about 2200 copies below the actual.

  5. Planetoid and Debris are really similar in theme. I keep forgetting their names and when I ask someone in the shop about ‘the other comic like Planetoid’ they always know I’m talking about Debris and vice-versa. I really enjoy the art and character designs in those books.

What was Green Wake like? Worth picking up?

  6. Just to clear things up, PLANET OF THE APES: CATACLYSM which I write with Corinna Bechko is an ongoing. Exile was always a miniseries.

POTA:Cataclysm #1 is on sale this week.

I’m sad that Daryl Gregory and Carlos Magno’s POTA series is ending as well. it’s a great book!

  7. Image put most of their digital #1’s for free on Comixology recently. Thought that was a pretty good move , maybe that’ll help change some numbers in months ahead . I know it helped me want to buy original Saga’s & Planetoids which I’m collecting so I can start reading them in order and I’m a comics cheapskate. (btw I don’t like those bound books, glad they make money for the creators but I’d rather have digital or real thing) And kind of interested in Thief of Thieves, don’t know why….

The Planetoid issue#3 cover with the frog against the scifi cave-looks like something out of Moebius-stellar…Also its so well crafted for a guy who’s a one man show. When you see what Saga and a guy like that is doing, its easy to stroll pass the Marvels & DC aisles like Micah says… this stuff is raising the bar for comic storytelling. Just a new standard and good taste.

Kinda interesting that Spawn (non 90’s Spawn) & Haunt are these sputtering books even though its done by these top talents who have been wildly successful at other books …I think subject matter may be part of it. My take is the main heroes of these books have got the Moon Knight complex. A character that’s mysterious & dark and a good inspiration for inky potfolio art but not really all that interesting…and then there’s the elephant in the room, the long shadow of Batman casts over caped & haunted dude characters. Sci Fi , mystery & crime dramas area a bit easier for independents to carve more ground in without being overly referential to Dc & Marvel. That said, I still haven’t seen superheroes that capture the fancy of the public like the mainstream ones yet . And since superheroes dominate the medium, its curious how one finds that magic. Spawn was the closest thing for a while, I think. Close but no cigar.

Maybe when Saga comes back down the line , it’ll help make records like the Walking Dead..Hope so.

  8. So the Walking Dead’s sale numbers really jumped w/#97, w/the May issue, and kept steamrolling after that.

Does this coincide w/season 2 of the show ending, or where the last tpb left off?

A good “jumping on point” for new readers, perhaps?

  9. “100. Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation (IDW)

A big increase, this series appears to have performed well above expectations, selling far more than either property’s own books. ”

So there’s not much overlap between the two fandoms?

Me, I’m dilettante with both franchises. I’ll read the trade if I get it for free.

  10. You know what sucks? I knew that the Massive was coming out, but forgot to order it from my lcs, and now it’s pretty much too late. Going to have to go with the trade, given that my store is inept at finding anything more than a month old if it’s not Marvel or DC.

  11. @stealthwise: That does suck because often I’ll miss the first couple issues of a book (usually indie) and when a latter issue catches my eye and I enjoy it I go back and pick up those missed issues. I understand if I’m trying to pick up the last six or seven months but only a few issues in you should be able to get a copy through your local shop. Otherwise they’ll start losing business to online sites or stores in the area (if there are any). When is the trade coming out?

  12. Yay, Spider! The artwork’s a little stiff but it and the Shadow are quite good reads.

It’s too bad Valiant launched with XO and Harbinger. Bloodshot and Archer and Armstrong have been much stronger titles in my view.

    Mike

  13. I wanna say that Kirby Genesis #8 had “the end” on the last page when I flipped thru it a few weeks ago, so that was the true end of the series.

I noticed that this week’s Flash Gordon Zeitgeist series featured “to be concluded” on the last page – that means this particular arc is ending, or it’s a cancellation (10 issues were previously listed at Dynamite’s site).
