While Walking Dead and Saga lead the chart again, the big story this month is Jonathan Hickman’s East of West, blowing expectations out of the water with a strong debut. There aren’t that many new titles this month, although Image have four strong debuts, headed up by the infuriating Sex (you’ll see). Elsewhere it’s largely a month of consolidation, with many titles holding within a few percentage points of last month’s sales.

139 indie books charted this month, down on last month’s 150. The bottom book sold 4,077, very slightly down on last month’s 4,110. They sold approximately 1,565,806 in total, also down on last month’s 1,625,267. Despite that, average sales are 11,264 per book, up on last month’s 10,835. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

It was another good month for risers. Out of the 139 books, 36 went up in sales and 92 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Image continue as the top indie publisher, with an 8.01% dollar share and a 7.88% market share, IDW have a 6.34% dollar share and 5.24% market share, Dark Horse have a 4.72% dollar share and a 4.16% market share, Dynamite have a 2.16% dollar share and 1.87% market share and Boom! have a 1.68% dollar share and 1.49% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

Here’s this month’s top twenty indie graphic novels.

Those Avatar TLA books are doing very well for Dark Horse at the moment, and with the first Massive trade and a a new Star Wars book, they get the three highest entries in the indie chart this month. The other new books are a nice mix, Superheroes with Archer & Armstrong and Tower Chronicles, humour with the first Adventure Time HC, horror from the trade collection of Scott Snyder’s Severed and the fifth Crossed book, and sci-fi and manga represented by Doctor Who and Blade of the Immortal respectively. Saga and Walking Dead take up the other eight places.

300. Jim Butcher's Dresden Files (Dynamite)

01/2013: JBDF Ghoul Goblin #1 - ????
02/2013: JBDF Ghoul Goblin #2 - ???? (???)

A first appearance for Dynamite’s adaptation of the fantasy PI series.

John Russo’s series continues.

298. Emily & The Strangers (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Emily & The Strangers #1 - 5,409
02/2013: -
03/2013: Emily & The Strangers #2 - 4,102 (-25.7%)

A reasonable second issue drop, but it highlights how the property has dropped off in popularity.

297. High Ways (IDW)

01/2013: High Ways #1 - 6,453
02/2013: High Ways #2 - 4,204 (-34.9%)
03/2013: High Ways #3 - 4,137 (-1.6%)

Smoothing right out, it’s not selling hugely, but its fans seem to be enjoying it.

296. All-Crime Comics (Art of Fiction)

03/2013: All Crime #1 - 4,204

A pastiche of the pre-code crime comics, I’d imagine the Bruce Timm cover has helped sales considerably.

295. Blackacre (Image)

12/2012: Blackacre #1 - 9,804
12/2012: Blackacre #2 - 5,292 (-46.0%)
01/2013: -
02/2012: Blackacre #3 - 4,737 (-10.5%)
03/2012: Blackacre #4 - 4,254 (-10.2%)

Not leveling out at all.

289. Savage Dragon (Image)

03/2012: -

04/2012: Savage Dragon #179 - 4,614 (-1.5%)
06/2012: Savage Dragon #180 - 4,595 (-0.4%)

02/2013: -
03/2013: Savage Dragon #185 - 4,457 (+2.1%)

This really is a very stable series, has been hovering around the mid-four thousands for years now.

288. Flash Gordon Zeitgeist (Dynamite)

03/2012: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #4 - 6,934

====

04/2012: -

02/2013:
03/2013: Flash Gordon Zeitgeist #10 - 4,457 (-9.4%)

Fading off into oblivion.

287. Archie (Archie)

03/2012: Archie #631 - 4,614

====

04/2012: Archie #632 - 4,765 (+3.3%)

07/2012: Archie #635 - 5,319 (+16.8%)
08/2012: Archie #636 - 5,559 (+4.3%)
09/2012: Archie #637 - ???? (???)
10/2012: Archie #638 - ???? (???)

01/2013: Archie #640 - ???? (???)
02/2013: -
03/2013: Archie #641 - 4,466 (???)

Archie meets Glee, and pushes the book back into the lower reaches of the chart. Not quite as much of a draw as the Kiss crossover, which sold over 17,000 copies of the first part.

286. The Spider (Dynamite)

05/2012: The Spider #1 - 12,547
06/2012: The Spider #2 - 8,680 (-30.8%)
07/2012: The Spider #3 - 8,907 (+2.6%)
08/2012: The Spider #4 - 7,956 (-10.7%)
09/2012: The Spider #5 - 6,985 (-12.2%)

12/2012: The Spider #7 - 5,571 (-11.3%)
01/2013: The Spider #8 - 5,170 (-7.2%)
02/2013: The Spider #9 - 4,760 (-7.9%)
03/2013: The Spider #10 - 4,505 (-5.4%)

The smallest drop yet, but it’s awfully low.

284. Ferals (Avatar)

03/2012: -

====

04/2012: Ferals #4 - 6,043 (-1.9%)
05/2012: Ferals #5 - 5,624 (-6.9%)
06/2012: -
07/2012: Ferals #6 - 5,883 (+4.6%)
08/2012: Ferals #7 - 5,690 (-3.3%)

12/2012: Ferals #11 - 5,045 (???)
01/2013: Ferals #12 - 4,775 (-5.4%)
02/2013: -
03/2013: Ferals #13 - 4,653 (-2.6%)

Sort of stable, but dwindling.

282. Sherlock Holmes Liverpool Demon (Dynamite)

12/2012: Sherlock Holmes Liverpool Demon #1 - 6,598
02/2013: Sherlock Holmes Liverpool Demon #2 - 4,756 (-28.0%)
03/2013: Sherlock Holmes Liverpool Demon #3 - 4,682 (-1.6%)

That’s leveled out very quickly.

281. Bionic Man vs Bionic Woman (Dynamite)

01/2013: Bionic Man Vs Bionic Woman #1 - 6,753
02/2013: Bionic Man Vs Bionic Woman #2 - 5,390 (-20.2%)
03/2013: Bionic Man Vs Bionic Woman #3 - 4,743 (-12.0%)

An okay second-issue drop, probably good that it’s a mini-series.

279. Hellraiser (Boom!)

03/2012: Hellraiser #12 - 7,329

====

04/2012: Hellraiser #13 - 6,855 (-6.5%)
04/2012: Hellraiser Annual #1 - 6,283
05/2012: Hellraiser #14 - 6,707 (-2.2%)
06/2012: -

11/2012: Hellraiser #20 - 5,558 (-4.4%)
12/2012-01/2013: -
02/2012: Hellraiser Dark Watch #1 - 5,528 (-0.5%)
03/2012: Hellraiser Dark Watch #2 - 4,774 (-13.6%)

On the one hand, that’s a decent second-issue drop, but sales are really in freefall, the relaunch hasn’t helped at all.

278. Damsels (Dynamite)

09/2012: Damsels #1 - 13,201
10/2012: Damsels #2 - 9,029 (-31.6%)
11/2012: Damsels #3 - 7,388 (-18.2%)
12/2012: Damsels #4 - 5,851 (-20.8%)
01/2013: Damsels #5 - 5,221 (-10.8%)
02/2013: -
03/2013: Damsels #6 - 4,799 (-8.1%)

There’s a good comic in here somewhere, but it’s horribly overwritten and hard to follow.

277. Queen Sonja (Dynamite)

03/2012: -

====

04/2012: Queen Sonja #28 - 6,026 (-1.2%)
05/2012: Queen Sonja #29 - 5,861 (-2.7%)
06/2012: -
07/2012: Queen Sonja #30 - 5,688 (-3.0%)
08/2012: Queen Sonja #31 - 5,526 (-2.8%)
09/2012: Queen Sonja #32 - 5,454 (-1.3%)
10-11/2012: -
12/2012: Queen Sonja #33 - 5,269 (-3.4%)
01-02/2013: -
03/2013: Queen Sonja #34 - 4,807 (-8.8%)

3 issues in seven months, Dynamite seem to just lose interest in books after a while. I think this may be scheduled for cancellation when Gail Simone’s new series starts.

276. Darkness (Image)

03/2012: Darkness #101 - 7,214

====

04/2012: Darkness #102 - 5,963 (-17.3%)
05/2012: Darkness #103 - 6,140 (+3.0%)
06/2012: Darkness #104 - 5,823 (-5.2%)

01/2013: Darkness #110 - 4,869 (-1.9%)
02/2013: Darkness #111 - 4,870 (0%)

Super-stable, and with a Top Cow crossover coming up.

275. Jennifer Blood (Dynamite)

03/2012: Jennifer Blood #10 - 9,421

====

04/2012: Jennifer Blood #11 - 8,975 (-4.7%)

07/2012: Jennifer Blood Annual #1 - 6,068
08/2012: Jennifer Blood #15 - 7,491 (-5.0%)
09/2012: Jennifer Blood #16 - 7,208 (-3.8%)
09/2012: Jennifer Blood #17 - 6,942 (-3.7%)
10/2012: Jennifer Blood #18 - 6,620 (-4.6%)
11/2012: Jennifer Blood #19 - 6,421 (-3.0%)
12/2012: Jennifer Blood #20 - 5,933 (-7.6%)
01/2013: Jennifer Blood #21 - 5,459 (-8.0%)
02/2013: Jennifer Blood #22 - 5,331 (-2.3%)
02/2013: Jennifer Blood #23 - 5,126 (-3.8%)
03/2013: Jennifer Blood #24 - 4,879 (-4.8%)

Dynamite seem to be sticking with this for the moment, despite the increasing drops.

272. Dark Horse Presents (Dark Horse)

03/2012: Dark Horse Presents #10 - 6,881 (-11.2%)

====

04/2012: Dark Horse Presents #11 - 7,118 (+3.4%)
05/2012: Dark Horse Presents #12 - 7,281 (+2.3%)
06/2012: Dark Horse Presents #13 - 7,132 (-2.0%)
07/2012: Dark Horse Presents #14 - 6,448 (-9.6%)
08/2012: Dark Horse Presents #15 - 6,154 (-4.6%)
09/2012: Dark Horse Presents #16 - 5,765 (-6.3%)
10/2012: Dark Horse Presents #17 - 5,546 (-3.8%)
11/2012: Dark Horse Presents #18 - 5,400 (-2.6%)

01/2013: Dark Horse Presents #20 - 4,949 (-3.4%)
02/2013: Dark Horse Presents #21 - 5,647 (+14.1%)
03/2013: Dark Horse Presents #22 - 4,966 (-12.1%)

Losing all of last month’s gains, but stable from the month before.

268. Colder (Dark Horse)

11/2012: Colder #1 - 7,670
12/2012: Colder #2 - 5,683 (-25.9%)
12/2012: Colder #3 - 5,217 (-8.2%)
02/2012: Colder #4 - 5,079 (-2.6%)
03/2012: Colder #5 - 5,097 (+0.4%)

A slight increase for the last issue of this odd horror title.

266. Dia De Los Muertos (Image)

02/2013: Dia De Los Muertos #1 - 6,179
03/2013: Dia De Los Muertos #2 - 5,122 (-15.7%)

Riley Rosomo’s anthology book has an okay second issue drop.

265. Grimm Universe (Zenescope)

10/2012: Grimm Universe #1 - 5,220
12/2012: Grimm Universe #2 - ???? (???)
01/2013: -
02/2012: Grimm Universe #3 - 4,593 (???)
03/2012: Grimm Universe #4 - 5,184 (+11.4%)

I can only imagine this increase is variant-led, as it’s a spotlight on the main Grimm bad guy, rather than bad girls.

262. Bart Simpson Comics (Bongo)

03/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #69 - 5,214

====

04/2012: Bart Simpson Comics #70 - 5,281 (+1.3%)

02/2013: Bart Simpson Comics #80 - 5,235 (+0.7%)

No, not a mistake, this sells exactly the same as last month.

12/2012: Comeback #2 - 5,933 (-33.2%)

02/2013: Comeback #4 - 5,311 (-4.9%)
03/2013: Comeback #5 - 5,245 (-1.2%)

Smoothing out for the final issue of this interesting sci-fi crime book.

260. Legend o/t Shadowclan (Aspen)

02/2013: Legend o/t Shadowclan #1 - 33,246
03/2013: Legend o/t Shadowclan #2 - 5,287 (-84.1%)

An enormous drop-off for the second issue, after last month’s dollar debut.

258. Mega Man (Archie)

03/2012: Mega Man #11 - 6,182

====

04/2012: Mega Man #12 - 6,006 (-2.8%)

12/2012: Mega Man #20 - 6,351 (+13.0%)
01/2013: Mega Man #21 - 6,220 (-2.1%)
02/2013: Mega Man #22 - 5,373 (-13.6%)
03/2013: Mega Man #23 - 5,339 (-0.6%)

A slight fall, but next month’s Sonic crossover should raise things a bit.

257. Son of Merlin (Image)

02/2013: Son of Merlin #1 - 12,575
03/2013: Son of Merlin #2 - 5,362 (-57.4%)

Another big drop after a dollar issue, not quite as bad as Shadowclan though.

256. Fashion Beast (Avatar)

09/2012: Fashion Beast #1 - 12,831
10/2012: Fashion Beast #2 - 9,460 (-26.3%)
10/2012: Fashion Beast #3 - 7,569 (-20.0%)

02/2013: Fashion Beast #6 - 5,328 (-12.4%)
03/2013: Fashion Beast #7 - 5,435 (+2.0%)

This looks like it’s leveling out at last.

255, 270, 293. Bionic Man (Dynamite)

03/2013: Bionic Man #18 - 5,059 (-7.3%)
03/2013: Bionic Man Annual #1 - 4,313

Ditching the Kevin Smith’s from the title, three issues this month, with the annual doing okay.

254.Witch Doctor (Image)

11/2012: Witch Doctor Malpractice #1 - 8,802 (+38.8%)
12/2012: Witch Doctor Malpractice #2 - 6,673 (-24.2%)

02/2013: Witch Doctor Malpractice #4 - 5,552 (-3.9%)
03/2013: Witch Doctor Malpractice #5 - 5,481 (-1.3%)

Pretty solid for the penultimate issue of this mini series. I quite like this book, it should do better.

253. Peanuts (Boom!)

03/2012: Peanuts #3 - 10,188

Still rather rapid drops for this point in the series.

02/2013: Mars Attacks #7 - 5,943 (-8.7%)
03/2013: Mars Attacks #8 - 5,727 (-3.6%)

The smallest drop yet, this may be approaching its level.

Looking a bit terminal, the next issue has two covers, which might help a little.

248. Mind MGMT (Dark Horse)

06/2012: Mind MGMT #2 - 5,566 (-26.2%)

02/2013: Mind MGMT #8 - 5,268 (+10.5%)
03/2013: Mind MGMT #9 - 5,803 (+10.2%)

As good as this book is, the increases are probably mainly speculator-driven at the moment, but that’s no bad thing really, it gets the book out there.

246. Doctor Who Classics (IDW)

03/2013: Doctor Who Classics #1 - 5,954

Reprinting stories from the UK, the low sales here are probably due to it starring the seventh Doctor, never the most popular.

245. Deathmatch (Boom!)

12/2012: Deathmatch #1 - 30,946 (35,760)
01/2013: Deathmatch #2 - 9,315 (-70.0%)
02/2013: Deathmatch #3 - 6,490 (-30.3%)
03/2013: Deathmatch #4 - 5,978 (-7.9%)

Starting to level out, but approaching a sixth of the initial sales after only four months isn’t good. I’m enjoying it a lot though, it’s a lot of fun.

244. TMNT Color Classics(IDW)

05/2012: TMNT Color Classics #1 - 10,732
06/2012: TMNT Color Classics #2 - 8,713 (-18.8%)

02/2013: TMNT Color Classics #9 - 4,984 (-7.9%)
03/2013: TMNT Color Classics Micro Donatello - 6,000 (+16.9%)

A nice increase for the third of the original micro-series issues.

243. Skullkickers (Image)

02/2013: Uncanny Skullkickers #1 - 7,271
03/2013: Savage Skullkickers #1 - 6,007 (-17.4%)

I have no idea whether this is a good figure or not, but I guess it’s still doing better than before this new arc.

242. Drew Hayes Poison Elves (Ape)

03/2013: Drew Hayes Poison Elves #1 - 6,052

A continuation of the late Hayes’ rough and ready dark fantasy book. I was a big fan of this comic, and despite my reservations I quite enjoyed this debut issue from Robb Horan, who wrote a few PE spin-offs back in the day.

241. 47 Ronin (Dark Horse)

11/2012: 47 Ronin #1 - 8,488
12/2012: 47 Ronin #2 - 6,101 (-28.1%)
01-02/2013: -
03/2012: 47 Ronin #3 - 6,142 (+0.6%)

Stan Sakai and DH publisher Mike Richardson’s adaptation of the Japanese feudal tale continues after a short delay, and is rock solid.

240. Five Weapons (Image)

02/2013: Five Weapons #1 - 7,721
03/2013: Five Weapons #2 - 6,196 (-19.7%)

Not too bad a drop for Jimmie Robinson’s enormously enjoyable new book.

02/2013: Wonderland #8 - 6,707 (-1.1%)
03/2013: Wonderland #9 - 6,563 (-2.1%)

Zenescope’s flagship book is very stable overall, and Wonderland seems to be stabilizing at around the same level.

235. Vampirella (Dynamite)

03/2012: Vampirella #15 - 9,212

====

04/2012: Vampirella #16 - 9,012 (-2.2%)

02/2013: Vampirella #26 - 6,946 (-4.8%)
03/2013: Vampirella #27 - 6,563 (-5.5%)

The size of the drops are increasing, this probably needs a bit of a boost soon.

234. Warlord of Mars Dejah Thoris (Dynamite)

02/2013: Dejah Thoris #22 - 7,059 (+0.9%)
03/2013: Dejah Thoris #23 - 6,697 (-5.1%)

After last month’s little uptick, the drops resume.

02/2013: Great Pacific #4 - 8,102 (-15.7%)
03/2013: Great Pacific #5 - 6,709 (-17.2%)

Yikes, this is dropping like a rock. I don’t really know why, it’s really very good indeed. Between this and The Massive, maybe people don’t want to read environmental books at the moment.

 231. Tarot Witch of the Black Rose (Broadsword)

03/2012: Tarot #73 - 6,672

12/2012-02/2013: -
03/2012: Planetoid #5 - 6,835 (-7.9%)

The final issue arrives very late, and with a drop, but not too bad sales-wise.

228. Ghost (Dark Horse)

09/2012: Ghost #0 - 12,234
10/2012: Ghost #1 - 12,252 (+0.1%)

01/2013: Ghost #3 - 7,981 (-11.6%)
03/2013: Ghost #4 - 6,899 (-13.6%)

Not brilliant sales for this last issue, but apparently enough to convince Dark Horse to give it an ongoing series.

03/2013: Todd The Ugliest Kid On Earth #3 - 7,140 (+15.6%)

Strong word of mouth sees a good increase this month. I quite like this book; it’s amusingly twisted in the same way as The Goon.

223. Hack Slash (Image)

The final issue of Tim Seeley’s long-running horror series gets a very nice increase.

02/2013: Real American Hero #187 - 7,489 (-0.7%)
03/2013: Real American Hero #188 - 7,393 (-1.3%)

Pretty solid, although clearly this sort of slow decline can’t continue for ever, and this isn’t the sort of book you can crossover. Although I guess you could cross it over with the other GI Joe books as a sort of parallel universe thing…

218. Vampirella Strikes (Dynamite)

12/2012: Vampirella Strikes #1 - 14,862

02/2013: Vampirella Strikes #2 - 7,972 (-46.4%)
03/2013: Vampirella Strikes #3 - 7,461 (-6.4%)

Despite last month’s huge drop this looks like it’s going to settle down just above the parent title.

01/2013: Rachel Rising #14 - ???? (???)
02/2013: -
03/2013: Rachel Rising #15 - 7,612 (???)

I’m not entirely sure what happened to last month’s sales, but I would guess some of the sales have been split between January and February, as has happened twice before with this book.

02/2013: -
03/2013: Witchblade #164 - 7,670 (+0.2%)

Level this month, but past figures show that means nothing.

All of the Transformers books are fairly stable this month, predictably a Bumblebee one-shot sells less than last month’s Megatron. There’s also a one-shot reprinting the online comics that tied into the Fall of Cybertron videogame, which I listed with the Spotlight titles as I couldn’t think of anywhere else to put it.

Well, I said this was likely to see a sales increase, admittedly this is bigger than I expected considering it’s the middle of a storyline. Almost entirely speculator-driven, mind.

180. Archer & Armstrong (Valiant)

08/2012: Archer & Armstrong #1 - 23,464
09/2012: Archer & Armstrong #2 - 14,539 (-38.0%)

02/2013: Archer & Armstrong #7 - 11,494 (-9.1%)
03/2013: Archer & Armstrong #8 - 11,072 (-3.7%)

This looks like it’s going to settle down in the mid 10,000’s.

179. Judge Dredd (IDW)

11/2012: Judge Dredd #1 - 32,266
12/2012: Judge Dredd #2 - 13,995 (-56.6%)

02/2013: Judge Dredd #4 - 11,512 (-5.3%)
03/2013: Judge Dredd #5 - 11,447 (-0.6%)

Leveling out at a good level, I would imagine IDW are quite happy with these sales.

175. The Shadow (Dynamite)

04/2012: The Shadow #1 - 45,548
05/2012: The Shadow #2 - 21,982 (-51.7%)

02/2013: -
03/2013: The Shadow #10 - 11,682 (-2.7%)

That’s a promisingly small drop this month, it might be starting to level out.

171. Helheim (Oni)

03/2013: Helheim #1 - 11,877

A new horror-fantasy book from Sixth Gun’s Cullen Bunn, I think maybe some of these sales are speculator driven, with a second-print coming. It’s good too.

03/2013: Crossed Badlands #25 - 12,022 (+65.2%)
03/2013: Crossed Badlands #26 - 8,326 (-30.7%)

The predictable increase for Garth Ennis’ first issue back, but it only holds a quarter or so of the increase to the next issue.

167. Harbinger (Valiant)

06/2012: Harbinger #1 - 32,111
07/2012: Harbinger #2 - 17,239 (-46.3%)

02/2013: 1948 #5 - 10,172 (-1.3%)
03/2013: Vampire #1 - 12,474 (+22.6%)

Quite a way above the main book, this appears to be a bit more accessible.

164. Chew (Image)

This is pretty stable at the moment as well.

159. Judge Dredd Year One (IDW)

03/2013: Judge Dredd Year One #1 - 13,013

Coming in higher than the main Dredd book, these are pretty good numbers.

A strong finish for this ‘Turtles mini.

03/2013: GI Joe Special Missions #1 - 13,104 (+97.8%)

I’ve continued the numbering from SE & SS for this month as it’s a direct replacement title, and it’ll be interesting to see how they compare.

153. Shadowman (Valiant)

11/2012: Shadowman #1 - 25,048
12/2012: Shadowman #2 - 16,917 (-32.5%)

02/2013: Shadowman #4 - 12,531 (-6.0%)

A decent increase for no apparent reason, which is always a good thing.

152. Five Ghosts (Image)

03/2013: Five Ghosts Haunting of Fabian Gray #1 - 13,163

The latest of Image’s debut titles does decent figures. It’s an odd book, has quite a classic pulpy feel to it.

The sales finally catch up to the critical acclaim this book has been receiving, almost doubling.

149. Sledgehammer '44 (Dark Horse)

03/2013: Sledgehammer '44 #1 - 13,446

Set in the Hellboy-verse, this is a fun little book about a WWII army robot. The Atomic Robo guys may be talking to their lawyers…

03/2013: Mark Waid's Green Hornet #1 - 15,114 (+217.8%)

A decent opening figure, if not as high as some of Dynamite’s recent debuts. Hopefully that means it won’t see the sizable second issue drop those books generally show, we shall see. I’ve showed the numbering for the old series as a comparison, but that will be continuing as Green Hornet Legacy.

139. Lost Vegas (Image)

03/2013: Lost Vegas #1 - 15,273

Sales are bouncing around a lot for Valiant’s flagship book, it still has some way to go before stabilizing.

Three really strong titles for Image, and not one of them a superhero book. As a publisher, they’re really doing a sterling job in helping to broaden our industry’s genres.

03/2013: Star Wars Legacy #1 Floating World - 21,600

A good debut for this returning title, this time with a new star – Han Solo’s great-great grand-daughter. Dark Horse have hired the creative team of the critically acclaimed Planet of the Apes comics, Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman for this book, and I think that may have contributed to these numbers.

It’s starting to get very difficult to come up with a new way to say a book is very stable at the moment. Thank god I’m almost finished.

98. Sex (Image)

03/2003: Sex #1 - 23,630

An excellent debut for Joe Casey’s new book. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to read it. This is because someone decided to highlight one word in almost every speech bubble, apparently at random. As a result I keep getting thrown out of the story every time I try to read it. I got four pages in and realized I had no idea what had happened so far because it kept distracting me. Does anyone know why this was done?

03/2013: Shrugged Vol 3 #1 - 30,657

I went back and dug out the sales for the previous series, which was heavily affected by co-creator Michael Turner’s death in 2007. These sales are obviously excellent, but it is a dollar book, and Legend of the Shadowclan started stronger before plummeting for the second issue.

02/2013: Star Wars #2 - 46,063 (+16.1%)
03/2013: Star Wars #3 - 45,522 (-1.2%)

Incredibly impressive sales for the Star Wars series that everyone was waiting for. I predict more projects set in this time-period, if Disney allow Dark Horse to keep the license when the new films start coming out.

35. East of West (Image)

03/2013: East of West #1 – 49,518

A barnstorming debut for Jonathan Hickman’s new series, selling almost 12,000 more copies than the first issue of Saga. I do wonder how much of these sales are speculator driven, but it’s gone to second and third prints.

03/2013: The Walking Dead #108 - 67,423 (+6.1%)

The introduction of Ezekiel, who is apparently going to be an important character, helps sales considerably, as character debuts have proved to be strong investments with the series.

The Michone special picks up another 10,703 copies sold, I’m not entirely sure why that amount at this point, so possibly this is due to a Diamond sale.
======

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. The increase on Shadowman might be due to the first appearance of major villain Master Darque in the new Valiant ‘verse.

  2. Initial orders on Five Weapons #3 suggest even less of a drop than between #1 and #2 — I’m crossing my fingers that things stay healthy. Comics can be such a tricky business sometimes, but I’m having fun with the series and I’m happy just to keep it in the *black*.

  3. actually, Hellboy in Hell was really good. Have no idea whats going on but didn’t matter, Mignola’s approach to the medium and exquisite taste in storytelling made it satisfying. It was rich but still easy to read, clear and beautiful to look at (with Dave Stewart’s awesome coloring ) Have been getting despondent about the medium, looking for something to read that was new. Glad something was there and this chart says, its a relative success too.

Dark Horse, IDW, Boom, Valiant, Boom, Dynamite seem like they don’t exist in much analysis outside of numbers, how all those companies relate to and see each other vs the over-hyped, overrated …oh wait…chorus chants please….” Image Comics”. Interested about the dynamics of this universe more in todays world , as they all vy for the remaining scraps of the comic book audience while Marvel and DC seek to Michael Bay the rest of the medium into kingdom come till they all can get jobs in the entertainment biz, turning the medium into printed loss leaders for bad movies to sell to a boring night in the suburbs and overseas.

Image- doing the nerdvert stuff like Saga resorts to these days. I dunno. Never was into zombies but since our society made us into sheep without rights as we helplessly watch Google, Congress and the highest bidders take away more, I get why its popular. Still wish there was a Charlton, Warren or Gold Key type outfit back in the mix again. Maybe that’s Dark Horse, not sure. Something with snap and pop but clear and concise alternative options without the posing an not just hocking properties. Unique without wearing weirdness as an excuse to make lousy, over scripted stories that few of us can understand. I see “Invincible” and a few others like that in there, and its like, thats seriously lame.. How are they above 100 issues? Its doesn’t seem to be moving the needle on comics. Maybe I don’t read enough but IMHO as they say.

  4. Thrilled to see DW: Prisoners of Time doing so well. Also pleased to see Transformers: ReGen One holding up well. It should end at 100 with respectable numbers.

  5. Mellerick, I love how you are so on top of reading so many of these books. It’s bloody impressive. I didn’t realize Planetoid had been a miniseries. I really enjoyed it.

  6. I can’t figure out the highlighting in Sex either. Not only does it seem to be random words that are emphasized, but the color used to highlight the words randomly fluctuates.

I’m actually hoping it isn’t random, suspect that it isn’t, but can’t figure out what the method to the madness is.

  7. I don’t really like the Skullkickers #1s schtick. I’ve just gotten the covers that continue the original numbering. If it helps the book, I guess it’s fine.

I’m one of the ones not reading Peter Panzerfaust as an investment. I bought issue one day of release and it’s a really good book. The “narrated from the present” format just works and keeps you guessing a little.

  8. Shadowman is a very “complete” title right now (both in quality of writing & art). Someone had mentioned earlier that they thought it was because of Master Darque first appearance, but he actually appeared in earlier issues….though #5 spotlighted him more.

Sad to see Godzilla, Planet of the Apes: Cataclysm, & Elephantmen didn’t make it.

  9. The Skullkickers #1 scheme has caused rack sale in my store go from 0 to 3 copies per book. Hopefully at least one or two people will add it permanently to their pull lists.

East of West is now my #2 title, behind Batman, and has had the most “adds” between the release of #1 and #2 than any book we’ve ever carried. I suspect it will be #1 by the end of the week.

  10. It didn’t occur to me until I read the comment in the other article about DC’s sales; this is an incredibly well written column. It’s insightful and draws a lot of attention to the strengths of almost every book on the list.

I didn’t realize Waid is writing a Green Hornet book. That looks like another I’ll start reading. I picked up the Rocketeer trade because I didn’t realize that was Waid and Samnee. I’m also a huge Landridge fan, so I’m really thankful to this column for that.

Mind MGMT is one of the best comics I’ve ever seen. Every time I get a new issue, I just spend an hour slowly going over each page and marveling at it. That book needs more readers.

  11. ChrisHero: yeah, this is why some (like myself) have really complained about the commentary on the DC column. When compared to this, it just reads as fanboy hipster sniping. It’s actually less clever than pretentious. I don’t even bother with the comments for that column any more.

Waid has really come into his own since Daredevil relaunched. Highly recommend the Green Hornet book he did. Very good, as are some of the other “pulp” books. Wish more people would give them a go rather than Uncanny Justi-vengers of ‘Merica or whatever.

  12. I seem to recall Mars Attacks is not solicited beyond issue 10 and that it was going on a break. I’m not sure if that means Layman is done or if there is an artist change or whatever.

  13. Thanks, Brian. I will put up with the renaming joke since it seems to be working, at least in your store. And, the store I shop at has started ordering a few more copies than usual as well. I haven’t read today’s yet, but the arc that started with the first renamed issue has been good.

The last Mars Attack said something like, “To be concluded” at the end, but that could mean the arc.

  14. @Evan Meadow……You’re right! Thanks for calming my troubled spirit.

@Paul Mellerick…..I echo others’ thoughts about how well written and insightful your Sales Charts are. Thank you for the time and effort you put into them!
