The usual suspects of Walking Dead (returning to the top ten), Buffy, Adventure Time and Fatale are joined by two new Image books, Happy & Bedlam, and a relaunched Dr Who, along with the Who/ Trek crossover. Overall the indie books this month are a bit more stable than last month, towards the top half of the chart anyway. Certain longer-running licensed books are still heading rapidly towards however. Just out of interest, the indie books market currently is far more weighted towards licensed titles than Marvel or DC. There are 51 titles this month that are based on characters that originated outside comics, compared to 65 that are based on characters that originated in comics.

135 indie books charted this month, down on last month’s 141. The bottom book sold 5,161, up on last month’s 4,404. They sold approximately 1,405,112, up on last month’s 1,364,314. Average sales are 10,408 per book, up on last month’s 9,675. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

It was a slightly better month than September for risers. Out of the 135 books, 23 went up in sales (compared to only 11 last month), and 93 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Image stormed top indie publisher this month, with 8.47% dollar share and a 7.60 market share, IDW have a 4.62% dollar share and 3.82% market share, Dark Horse have a 3.81% dollar share and a 3.11% market share, Dynamite have a 2.71% dollar share and 2.78% market share and Boom! Have a 1.29% dollar share and 1.39% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

9, 39. The Walking Dead (Image)

10/2007: The Walking Dead #43 - 22,737
10/2008: The Walking Dead #53 - 24,094
10/2009: The Walking Dead #66 - 24,944
10/2010: The Walking Dead #78 - 27,947
10/2011: The Walking Dead #90 - 31,778

====

11/2011: The Walking Dead #91 - 31,813 (+0.1%)

03/2012: The Walking Dead #95 - 33,916 (+4.8%)
04/2012: The Walking Dead #96 - 36,931 (+8.9%)
05/2012: The Walking Dead #97 - 53,733 (60,175)(+45.5%)
05/2012: The Walking Dead #98 - 49,974 (60,699)(+0.6%)

08/2012: The Walking Dead #101 - 51,732 (-85.9%)
09/2012: The Walking Dead #102 - 53,337 (+3.1%)
10/2012: The Walking Dead #103 - 74,378 (+39.4%)
10/2012: The Walking Dead Michone Special - 49,930

A big increase in sales, and another top ten entry, this one a little more unexpected. I think this is largely due to the Chris Giarusso variant that was solicited only a month before it shipped, and probably accounted for most of the 21,000 increase. The Michonne special also did spectacularly well for a reprint, even if the material from Playboy hadn’t been seen by many.

100. Happy (Image)

09/2012: Happy #1 - 32,977
10/2012: Happy #2 - 26,474 (-19.7%)

An average drop, but still very good figures and probably under-ordered, with second and third prints following.

104. Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)

10/2011: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #2 - 36,448

====

11/2011: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #3 - 33,485 (-8.1%)

10/2012: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #14 - 25,577 (-1.1%)

Fairly solid at the moment.

110. Bedlam (Image)

10/2012: Bedlam #1 - 22,736

Very good word of mouth has propelled this into the top half of the chart, and multiple printings have followed.

118. Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation (IDW)

05/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #1 - 20,940 (24,836)
06/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #2 - 19,273 (-8.0%)
07/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #3 - 21,996 (+14.1%)

10/2012: Star Trek TNG/ Doctor Who Assimilation #6 - 21,516 (-2.3%)

Despite a slight drop, still doing very well indeed.

121. Adventure Time (Boom!)

02/2012: Adventure Time #1 - 12,392 (20,915)
03/2012: Adventure Time #2 - 11,329 (20,193) (-8.6%)
04/2012: Adventure Time #3 - 17,131 (+51.2%)
05/2012: Adventure Time #4 - 20,289 (+18.4%)

09/2012: Adventure Time #8 - 19,755 (+1.7%)
10/2012: Adventure Time #9 - 20,636 (+4.5%)

Another upwards jump, for the second best initial sales. All of the issues are still in print, and I understand are selling like gangbusters. I understand that the first trade has sold out within a week, with a new printing arriving before Christmas.

122, 129. Fatale (Image)

01/2012: Fatale #1 - 41,000
02/2012: Fatale #2 - 20,315 (-1.0%)
03/2012: Fatale #3 - 20,222 (-0.5%)
04/2012: Fatale #4 - 22,804 (+12.8%)
05/2012: Fatale #5 - 22,484 (-1.4%)
06/2012: Fatale #6 - 21,828 (-2.9%)
07/2012: -
08/2012: Fatale #7 - 21,369 (-2.1%)
09/2012: -
10/2012: Fatale #8 - 20,542 (-3.9%)
10/2012: Fatale #9 - 19,345 (-5.8%)

Losing a thousand copies, but Brubaker has just announced that the series will be running at least 20 issues now, so I’m sure he’s still very happy with sales.

136, 193. Doctor Who Ongoing (IDW)

10/2009: Doctor Who #4 - 8,354
10/2010: Doctor Who #16 - 6,198

10/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #2 - 10,824 (-40.1%)

The new series launches well, but takes a hefty drop with the second issue. Still well above the last series though, and a first-class creative team of Diggle & Buckingham.

138. Spawn (Image)

10/2008: Spawn #185 - 26,775
10/2009: Spawn #195 - 18,475

09/2012: Spawn #223 - 21,965 (+19.8%)
10/2012: Spawn #224 - 17,759 (-19.1%)

A big drop back down and I’m sure this book will be going up and down a bit more yet.

140, 150. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing (IDW)

10/2011: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ongoing #3 - 22,855

====

09/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #14 - 17,682 (-3.6%)
10/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #15 - 17,591 (-3.6%)
10/2012: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Annual 2012 - 16,274

Still slowly sliding down, but the Annual does very well, only a little behind the main book.

142. Adventure Time Marceline & the Scream Queens (Boom!)

07/2012: Marceline & the Scream Queens #1 - 21,182
08/2012: Marceline & the Scream Queens #2 - 17,428 (-17.7%)

09/2012: Thief of Thieves #8 - 17,070 (-6.5%)
10/2012: Thief of Thieves #9 - 16,645 (-2.5%)

The drops are getting smaller, maybe some stability coming.

04/2012: The Shadow #1 - 45,548
05/2012: The Shadow #2 - 21,982 (-51.7%)

09/2012: The Shadow Annual #1 - 11,437
10/2012: The Shadow #6 - 16,362 (-5.3%)

The first post-Ennis issue, and not as large a drop as I would have expected.

149. X-O Manowar (Valiant)

05/2012: X-O Manowar #1 - 42,708
06/2012: X-O Manowar #2 - 21,261 (-50.2%)

10/2012: X-O Manowar #6 - 16,299 (-31.5%)

Dropping down again after Ninjak’s debut last month, but the general trend seems to be towards stability.

10/2009: Angel #26 - 22,886

09/2012: Angel & Faith #14 - 16,139 (-1.9%)

09/2012: Revival #3 - 13,943 (+33.0%)
10/2012: Revival #4 - 15,251 (+9.4%)

Another decent increase, as retailers scrabble to keep up with demand. Every issue has been reprinted so far.

07/2012: Darth Maul Death Sentence #1 - 18,579
08/2012: Darth Maul Death Sentence #2 - 16,148 (-13.1%)
09/2012: Darth Maul Death Sentence #3 - 15,509 (-4.0%)

Fairly standard third-issue drop.

160. Bravest Warriors (Boom!)

10/2012: Bravest Warriors #1 - 14,866

Based on a new cartoon from Adventure Time creator Pen Ward, for a slightly older audience, but no less hilarious.

163. Archer & Armstrong (Valiant)

Also very solid.

strong>170. Evil Ernie (Dynamite)

10/2012: Evil Ernie #1 - 13,769

A relaunch for the 90’s horror book, although they’re playing it slightly straighter than the over-the-top original.

The rest of the Star Wars comics, all doing okay, if not spectacularly.

10/2012: CBLDF Liberty Annual 2012 #5 - 13,306 (+94.4%)

A huge increase, I would imagine mainly down to the Walking Dead story hidden away in the back of the book. By Walking Dead standards, this may be a fairly tough book to find.

Still increasing towards next month’s halfway point issue #30, which features an event that has rather upset a lot of the audience…

The smallest drop so far, and by far the most commented title last month. People are very divided on this book. I like it, anyway.

The renumbering to #100 does absolutely nothing to sales, but this isn’t that sort of book, really. 1943 comfortably outsells it.

183. Ghost (Dark Horse)

09/2012: Ghost #0 - 12,234

======

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

Nope, your -14.3% is not correct at all, that’s all :p

  2. if those numbers are correct, MG a <1% drop, so a statistically insignificant fewer books were ordered.

  3. While the variant cover may have had some impact, the sizable increase on Walking Dead #103 is most likely due to the fact that the 17th trade collection covers #97-102, and retailers know that many new readers, when they get to the end of that collection, will want to continue reading the story in the single issues. A similar bump happened in with issue #97…

  4. Xavier – you’re absolutely right, I must have been half asleep. Decimal point is wrong, it should be 1.4%, and that actually makes it completely stable. Sorry all, but it wouldn’t be an Indie Chart without at least one error! I also think we may have those formatting issues again, will see what we can do there…

  5. I know Adventure Time is selling pretty well, but I can’t but help feeling like it would sell better if more stores ordered it. Finding Adventure Time is a walk in the park compared to Bravest Warriors, though, which no one seems to have ordered.

Paul. a small thing, and I hope this doesn’t come off as mean, but I would like to see more meat to your commentary. Whether it’s an editorial on why you enjoy or don’t enjoy a book or just musings on what caused a chart movement, I think the chart analysis could benefit from more of your insight.

  6. I’m really enjoying the Massive. It’s a spiritual successor to DMZ, and deserves more readers. For Pathfinder, the comic is a standard D&D fantasy book, but there’s something that makes it special. It follows the Pathfinder Rise of the Rune Lords modules using the same setting and characters. What I like about that is I’ve played the game and have experienced a different story. Reading this is akin to an alternate universe and I’m loving it. The backmatter is icing on the cake, thorough gazetteer-like entries of the setting. Excellent bang for you buck.

  7. I just think Chris Hero is spoiled from all the snarky commentary over in the DC month-2-month posting. ;)

  8. I very much doubt The Walking Dead added 21,000 sales due to a variant cover. Don’t get me wrong, it was a lovely cover but that’s some serious wishful thinking.

More likely that it was the first issue to follow on from the latest collection, coupled with the return of the TV show to help amp up the promotion.

Sad to see The Creep not performing as well as it should. It’s really good stuff.

  9. So many good books deserving of a wider audience, yet shops still under-order these titles. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to head across town to pick up a first issue from Image or another small publisher because my shop decided to play it safe and under-order.

Too many “super-hero” only comic shops out there. Theses shops need to get hip, indie comics are what the cool kids read these days.

  10. Very disappointed to see Danger Club with such a big drop. It is a great series and should definitely be finding itself in front of more eyes. But I imagine the unstable shipping schedule is having a large affect on that.
Hopefully the first trade collection will bump up the interest in the series.

  11. Always have trouble posting on this site. Lets try a second time.

No Planet of the Apes Cataclysm??? Its one of my favorite reads. Hope Boom! don’t cancel it.

And is the Michonne Walking Dead one shot going to be in the next trade? Never picked it up.

  12. James,, the Michonne one shot was just the Playboy story plus a reprint of issue #19, her first appearance.

If you never read the Playboy story, they’re reprinting it again as part of the FCBD issue this year.

  13. So how far down the list is Savage Dragon now? It had a recent issue with no letters-to-the-editor, so I’m wondering if this is in free fall…

Which would make me sad as I’ve been getting it since issue #1 and it continues to be lots of convoluted fun!

  14. Glad to see The Shadow doing well. Hopefully that will extend over the The Spider. Dynamite gets well-earned grief for their multiple cover nonsense but those two books and Green Hornet: Year One are really good reads.

    Mike

  15. Chris Hero – I absolutely agree with you about Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors. There are a lot of retailers that don’t stock it, and I really think if Boom sent all of those retailers a free starter pack to try they could add 40-80% to their sales for those books.

As far as my comments being a little meatier, no offence taken. It’s a combination of genuinely not having a lot to say about some books, and the fact that the Indie chart is substantially longer than the other two, and takes a hell of a long time to write! I spend around 20-30 hours a month on each column, partially down to my meagre spreadsheet skills, and partially because I like to take my time, trying to think of interesting things to say about the latest Red Sonja miniseries could make it even later than it already is! :) I’ll always try and comment where appropriate though.

John Warren – I think I meant heading rapidly downwards. Again, half asleep…

And all of those commenting on Walking Deads big rise this month, I think it’s probably a bit of both, variants and the start of a new arc. I did mean to mention the new arc, and got distracted by the variant. We’ll see next month, anyway.

  16. Paul,

I wasn’t thinking meaner, just more editorializing good or bad. But certainly time is a premium, so I understand not wanting to put in even more of it for a volunteer thing. Your column is great as it is! I really enjoy it.

  17. I always enjoy the column. There’s one thing I’ve been curious about. Have you got a specific target in mind (- 4%, say) when you say a title has had a “big drop?” I’m not sure you’re completely consistent. But I could be wrong!
