24378 Indie Month to Month Sales October 2013: Indies rebound after that dastardly Villains Month

By Paul Mellerick

Far more indie titles this month after DC’s Villains month stunt last month, that added 52 extra DC titles into the chart. 135 indie titles charted in the top 300, up on last month’s 109.

Partly, but not entirely due to this month’s Walking Dead issue, the indie chart sold approximately 2,031,509 comics, way higher than last month’s 1,521,695. It also means that the average sales this month are 15,048, up on last month’s 13,960.

Out of the 135 books, 24 went up in sales and 91 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

One interesting thing about this month’s chart is that none of the titles that missed the chart as a result of the extra Villains month comics returned this month. There were enough new titles from Marvel and DC, and high charting new indie titles, plus a number of double-shipping books; as a consequence not a one of them sold well enough to reappear.

Image have another great month with a 9.26% dollar share and a 10.85% market share, while IDW have a 6.27% dollar share and 4.96% market share, Dark Horse have a 5.36% dollar share and a 4.70% market share, Dynamite have a 2.47% dollar share and 2.54% market share and Boom! have a 1.84% dollar share and 1.78% market share.

UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

1. The Walking Dead (Image)

10/2008: The Walking Dead #53 - 24,094
10/2009: The Walking Dead #66 - 24,944
10/2010: The Walking Dead #78 - 27,947
10/2011: The Walking Dead #90 - 31,778
10/2012: The Walking Dead #103 - 74,378

====

11/2012: The Walking Dead #104 - 57,456 (-22.8%)
12/2012: The Walking Dead #105 - 57,781 (+0.6%)
01/2013: The Walking Dead #106 - 70,526 (+22.1%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead #107 - 63,575 (-9.9%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead The Governor Special - 51,355
03/2013: The Walking Dead #108 - 67,423 (+6.1%)
04/2013: The Walking Dead #109 - 90,362 (+34.0%)
05/2013: The Walking Dead #110 - 76,455 (-15.4%)
06/2013: The Walking Dead #111 - 74,857 (-2.1%)
07/2013: The Walking Dead #112 - 72,975 (-2.5%)
08/2013: The Walking Dead #113 - 70,273 (-3.7%)
09/2013: The Walking Dead #114 - 70,440 (+0.2%)
10/2013: The Walking Dead #115 - 310,584 (+340.9%)
10/2013: The Walking Dead Tyreese Special - 40,572
10/2013: The Walking Dead #1 10th Anniversary Ed - 39,780

Thirteen covers give Walking Dead its second number one, another amazing result for Robert Kirkman. It doesn’t quite reach the lofty height of the hundredth issue, which sold 366,051, but it isn’t far off. The Tyreese special sells around ten thousand copies less than the Governor or Michonne ones, but the character is long gone in the comic, and the stories it reprints are a little more recent. The Anniversary edition is the first time the debut issue has been printed in color, and at 6 bucks does very well.

28. The Star Wars (Dark Horse)

09/2013: The Star Wars #1 - 78,467
10/2013: The Star Wars #2 - 56,165 (28.4%)

Not too bad a drop, considering the high mark it started at. I suspect it will drop rather quickly over the course of the series; it’s going to be a bit too odd for a lot of people.

30. Saga (Image)

10/2013: -

====

11/2012: Saga #7 - 46,971 (53,267)(+15.7%)
12/2012: Saga #8 - 42,324 (48,965)(-9.9%)
01/2013: Saga #9 - 45,629 (+7.8%)
02/2013: Saga #10 - 48,388 (+6.0%)
03/2013: Saga #11 - 50,023 (+3.4%)

08/2013: Saga #13 - 55,372 (+3.8%)
09/2013: Saga #14 - 55,585 (+0.4%)
10/2013: Saga #15 - 54,816 (-1.4%)

A minor drop, but still holding up very well sales-wise. Every issue of this book gets better and better.

36. Pretty Deadly (Image)

10/2013: Pretty Deadly #1 - 45,883

A great launch, but I suspect this will be one of the ones that has a steep drop to come next month. It’s a great looking book though.

41. Velvet (Image)

10/2013: Velvet #1 - 41,897

On the other hand, I think this will hold its sales a little better, as Ed Brubaker & Steve Epting introduce a rarity, a middle-aged female star. She’s a retired super-spy, but still…

42. Afterlife with Archie (Archie)

10/2013: Afterlife With Archie #1 - 41,533

Surprise of the year, I’d say. Played as a completely straight horror story, this is an amazingly high quality book, written by Robert Aguirre Sacasa and illustrated by Francesco Francavilla, and printed on lovely paper with a card cover. Sales have been amazing, and it’s still selling, with a second print coming. I suspect the second issue will be badly under-ordered.

68, 159. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Star Wars #1 - 39,663 (63,410)
02/2013: Star Wars #2 - 46,063 (+16.1%)

05/2013: Star Wars #5 - 44,310 (-1.6%)
06/2013: Star Wars #6 - 42,806 (-3.4%)
07/2013: Star Wars #7 - 41,611 (-2.8%)
08/2013: Star Wars #8 - 38,792 (-6.8%)
09/2013: Star Wars #9 - 37,502 (-3.3%)
10/2013: Star Wars #10 - 36,019 (-3.9%)
10/2013: 1-for-$1 Star Wars #1 - 16,690

Dropping a little quickly, but not too worrying yet, while the 1-for-$1 reprint does decent numbers.

108. Lazarus (Image)

05/2013: Lazarus #1 - 48,030
07/2013: Lazarus #2 - 27,143 (31,470)(-43.5%)

Starting to level out at a good number.

11/2012: My Little Pony #1 - 80,128 (95,384)
12/2012: My Little Pony #2 - 39,841 (-50.3%)
01/2013: -
02/2013: My Little Pony #3 - 43,579 (+9.4%)
02/2013: MLP #1 & #2 Hot Topic Pack - 8,988
03/2013: My Little Pony #4 - 41,541 (-4.7%)
03/2013: My Little Pony #5 - 36,354 (-12.5%)
04/2013: My Little Pony #6 - 33,903 (-6.7%)
05/2013: My Little Pony #7 - 32,188 (-5.1%)
06/2013: My Little Pony #8 - 33,114 (+2.9%)

08/2013: My Little Pony Cover Gallery #1 - 6,859
09/2013: My Little Pony #11 - 32,784 (+33.9%)
10/2013: My Little Pony #12 - 23,686 (-27.7%)
10/2013: My Little Pony 2013 Annual - 18,614

I don’t understand the sales of this book at all, it seems to be all over the place.

110. Samurai Jack (IDW)

10/2013: Samurai Jack #1 - 23,661

The cult-favourite cartoon returns in new comics, following Powerpuff Girls last month.

119. Sex Criminals (Image)

09/2013: Sex Criminals #1 - 37,893
10/2013: Sex Criminals #2 - 22,510 (-40.6%)

A pretty hefty drop, but a very quick sell-out and second print for this issue, so it may go back up a little next month.

122. Trish Out of Water (Aspen)

10/2013: Trish Out of Water #1 - 22,080

Dollar book, one of the lower selling ones in this series.

131. Shaolin Cowboy (Dark Horse)

10/2013: Shaolin Cowboy #1 - 20,257

Geoff Darrow’s surreal martial artist returns, in a new series. Hopefully this means we’ll be seeing the older issues back in print very soon.

132. Rocket Girl (Image)

10/2013: Rocket Girl #1 - 20,287

Amy Reeder launches her creator owned book at Image, and does decent numbers.

147, 156. Adventure Time (Boom!)

====

09/2013: Adventure Time #20 - 18,822 (-5.2%)
10/2013: Adventure Time #21 - 18,156 (-3.5%)
10/2013: Adventure Time 2013 Spooktacular - 16,920

Dropping a bit these last few months, but bolstered by what appears to be a quarterly schedule of specials.

154. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW)

10/2011: TMNT #3 - 22,855
10/2012: TMNT #15 - 17,591

This seems to have found its level.

160. Three (Image)

10/2013: Three #1 - 16,347

Kieron Gillen’s tale of Helot slaves rising up against the Spartans who kept them slaves, the reverse of 300. Not a bad number.

09/2013: Sons of Anarchy #1 - 27,601
10/2013: Sons of Anarchy #2 - 14,688 (-46.8%)

06-09/2013: -

A huge delay hits sales badly for this issue.

188. Cryptozoic Man (Dynamite)

10/2013: Cryptozoic Man #1 - 12,635

A new book for Kevin Smith associates Walt Flanagan and Bryan Johnson. It’s not very good, but sales are decent, and it’s had a second printing.

The lowest sales to date, people seem to be losing interest in this book.

191. Rat Queens (Image)

09/2013: Rat Queens #1 - 21,745
10/2013: Rat Queens #2 - 12,335 (-43.3%)

A pretty sizable drop, not entirely unexpected, fantasy books not being particularly great sellers historically.

09/2013: Sex #7 - 13,074 (-9.8%)
10/2013: Sex #8 - 12,082 (-7.6%)

Slightly less of a drop this month, is probably the most positive thing I can say at the moment.

196. Star Wars Dark Times (Dark Horse)

02/2013: Fire Carrier #1 - 14,308 (+10.1%)
03/2013: Fire Carrier #2 - 13,077 (-8.6%)

05-09/2013: -
10/2013: MTG Theros #1 - 11,919 (+22.4%)

A return for the CCG tie-in, relaunching a little higher than the last series, but then it does link into the new card set, and I would guess has an exclusive card with it.

200. Conan (Dark Horse)

A decent increase, as this issue spotlights Beebop and Rocksteady, from the old TMNT cartoon.

09/2013: Sidekick #2 - 14,533 (-47.8%)
10/2013: Sidekick #3 - 11,371 (-21.8%)

Quite big drops, possibly they might slow next month, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

205. Quantum & Woody (Valiant)

07/2013: Quantum & Woody #1 - 17,622
08/2013: Quantum & Woody #2 - 12,818 (-27.3%)
09/2013: Quantum & Woody #3 - 10,734 (-16.3%)
10/2013: Quantum & Woody #4 - 11,242 (+4.7%)

A bit of a rise, possibly retailers cut their orders on the last issue a little too much.

208. The Shadow Now (Dynamite)

10/2013: The Shadow Now #1 - 10,989

Bringing the Shadow into the modern age, although with a little less humour than the Andy Helfer/ Kyle Baker run of the early nineties which tried the same trick.

209, 219. Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie)

10/2012: Sonic #242 - 8,695

====

10/2013: Star Trek Ongoing #26 - 10,872 (-4.5%)

Last month’s increase is a blip, as sales return to almost the exact same level as the issue before.

211. The Shadow (Dynamite)

09/2013: The Shadow Annual 2013 - 6,497
10/2013: The Shadow #18 - 10,863 (+9.9%)

A decent little increase, for no apparent reason.

212. Doctor Who Ongoing (IDW)

10/2012: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #2 - 10,824

10/2013: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #14 - 10,826 (-25.3%)

Losing almost all of last month’s increase, not sure why that issue was so popular?

213. Archer & Armstrong (Valiant)

====

11/2012: Archer & Armstrong #4 - 13,478 (-8.4%)

09/2013: Archer & Armstrong #13 - 9,910 (-0.6%)
10/2013: Archer & Armstrong #14 - 10,811 (+9.1%)

Another good increase, probably for the beginning of a new story arc.

09/2013: Peter Panzerfaust #14 - 7,714 (-8.4%)
10/2013: Peter Panzerfaust #15 - 10,769 (+39.6%)

Jumping around all over the place with a big increase, obviously this has some way to go until it stabilizes.

08/2013: Uber #5 - 11,598 (-3.6%)

Taking some time to find its feet with a big drop this month.

216. Rocketeer/ Spirit (IDW)

08-09/2013: -

Not a bad drop, especially considering it isn’t by the same artist as the first issue.

====

11/2012: Harbinger #6 - 13,617 (-6.7%)

Two Valiant books showing a slight increase, as retailers seem to be struggling to pin down their orders.

220. Grimm Fairy Tales Oz (Zenescope)

07/2013: GFT Oz #1 - 19,237
08/2013: GFT Oz #2 - 11,119 (-42.2%)
10/2013: GFT Oz #3 - 10,537 (-5.2%)

Sales seem to be levelling out at a higher level than most of the GFT books.

221. Itty Bitty Hellboy (Dark Horse)

08/2013: Itty Bitty Hellboy #1 - 15,545

10/2013: Itty Bitty Hellboy #3 - 10,404 (-12.7%)

Sales settling down, but to be honest this is a pretty disposable book. Personally I’m not a big fan of artist Art Baltazar, but that’s just my opinion.

222. The Shadow Year One (Dynamite)

02/2013: Shadow Year One #1 - 19,310
04/2013: Shadow Year One #2 - 13,748 (-28.9%)

223. Conan People of the Black Circle(Dark Horse)

10/2013: Conan People O/T Black Circle #1 - 10,213

A new Conan mini from Fred van Lente, incoming writer on the main book, and Ariel Olivetti, coming in not too far behind that main book in sales.

226. Zero (Image)

09/2013: Zero #1 - 20,352
10/2013: Zero #2 - 9,847 (-51.6%)

A massive and slightly unsurprising, if completely unwarranted drop, this is a great book, with excellent art from Tradd Moore this month. I think the next issue will see sales increase again.

227. Bloodshot (Valiant)

10/2012: Bloodshot #4 - 14,382

====

11/2012: Bloodshot #5 - 13,156 (-8.5%)

09/2013: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #14 - 10,225 (-9.5%)
10/2013: Bloodshot & The Hard Corps #15 - 9,806 (-4.1%)

This renaming really doesn’t seem to have helped things much. To be honest, this is the only one of the Valiant books that seems to be floundering a little in how it relates to the rest of the line.

228. Extinction Parade (Avatar)

06/2013: Extinction Parade #1 - 16,061
07/2013: -
08/2013: Extinction Parade #2 - 9,392 (-41.5%)
09/2013: -
08/2013: Extinction Parade #3 - 9,721 (+3.5%)

A slight uptick, possibly due to a rumoured movie deal.

229. Elfquest (Dark Horse)

10/2013: Elfquest Final Quest Special - 9,680

The return of the classic indie comic, although judging by these sales a lot of people seem to have forgotten it.

231. BPRD (Dark Horse)

10/2012: Hell on Earth #100 Return o/t Master #3 - 10,475

====

11/2012: Hell on Earth #101 Return o/t Master #4 - 11,208 (+7.0%)

09/2013: Hell on Earth #111 - 9,587 (-2.5%)

Relatively solid this month.

08-09/2013: -
10/2013: Five Ghosts #6 - 9,399 (-9.7%)

The original mini-series now turns into an ongoing. Not a brilliant start though.

235. Bedlam (Image)

10/2012: Bedlam #1 - 22,736 (27,303)

====

11/2012: Bedlam #2 - 18,583 (-18.3%)

Possibly sales are levelling out again following the departure of Riley Rossmo.

10/2013: Transformers Robots In Disguise #22 - 9,044 (-1.9%)

Both main Transformers titles are pretty solid this month.

Standard attrition.

08/2013: Abe Sapien #5 - 9,676 (-6.2%)
10/2013: Abe Sapien #6 - 9,120 (-5.7%)

Dropping quite fast now, not sure if this might be a spin-off too far as an ongoing series.

243. Sonic Universe (Archie)

====

11/2012: Sonic Universe #46 - 7,038 (-1.0%)

246. Grindhouse (Dark Horse)

10/2013: Grindhouse #1 - 8,802

A new horror series from Alex diCampi, firmly in the exploitation movie tradition. Enormous fun.

08-09/2013: -
10/2013: Americas Got Powers #7 - 8,774 (-10.9%)

Although the drops have been quite steep throughout the run of this book, when many Image titles are losing half their sales between the first two issues, it’s fairly creditable that this book took all 7 issues to drop that far.

248. Mara (Image)

12/2012: Mara #1 - 18,164
01/2013: Mara #2 - 11,397 (-37.3%)

10/2013: Transformers Regeneration One #95 - 8,663 (-15.5%)

A drop from the zero issue, but up on the last regular issue.

08/2013: Massive #15 - 8,713 (-3.0%)
09/2013: -
10/2013: Massive #16 - 8,345 (-4.2%)

Just doesn’t seem to be able to hold its monthly sales, still a great book though. I would imagine the trades will be perennials.

252, 263. Judge Dredd (IDW)

11/2012: Judge Dredd #1 - 32,266
12/2012: Judge Dredd #2 - 13,995 (-56.6%)

10/2013: Judge Dredd #11 - 8,269 (-4.0%)
10/2013: Judge Dredd #12 - 7,636 (-7.7%)

Starting to drop a bit quickly now. Shame, it’s by far the best US version of the character so far.

Two recent Image books that aren’t managing to hold their impressive early sales.

255. Rachel Rising (Abstract)

10/2012: Rachel Rising #12 - 7,987

====

09/2013: Rachel Rising #19 - 8,348 (-1.8%)
10/2013: Rachel Rising #20 - 8,166 (-2.2%)

Slipping a little, but still relatively solid overall.

09/2013: GI Joe Vol 3 #8 - 8,266 (-4.4%)
10/2013: GI Joe Vol 3 #9 - 8,099 (-2.0%)

This is now the highest selling GI Joe book, not looking too healthy really.

258. Mega Man (Archie)

====

11/2012: Mega Man #19 - 5,618 (-14.3%)

Totally stable this month.

A nice little increase for Ron Marz’s first issue back on the book.

261. Halo Initiation (Dark Horse)

08/2013: Halo Initiation #1 - 12,584
09/2013: Halo Initiation #2 - 8,771 (-30.3%)
10/2013: Halo Initiation #3 - 7,960 (-9.2%)

Fairly standard sales pattern over these first three issues.

262. TMNT New Animated Adventures (IDW)

08/2013: TMNT New Animated Adventures #2 - 10,304 (-28.4%)
09/2013: TMNT New Animated Adventures #3 - 8,744 (-15.1%)
10/2013: TMNT New Animated Adventures #4 - 7,905 (-9.6%)

Starting to level out, but a little way to go yet.

264. EA Poe Fall O/T House of Usher

11/2012: EA Poe Conqueror Worm One-Shot - 6,930
05/2013: EA Poe Fall O/T House of Usher #1 - 7,650 (-10.4%)

06/2013: EA Poe The Raven & Red Death One Shot - 7,560 (-15.3%)

Rich Corben tackles two of Poe’s best known works, probably not for the first time.

09/2013: -
10/2013: Game of Thrones #17 - 7,545 (-3.6%)

Sales are dwindling, although the collections apparently sell very well. Dynamite don’t have that license though, I think that’s held by the publisher of the novels.

10/2013: All New Fathom #3 - 6,508 (-10.6%)

Smoothing out, maybe a little higher than the last series.

300. Lords of Mars (Dynamite)

08/2013:Lords Of Mars #1 - 11,595
09/2013:Lords Of Mars #2 - 7,179 (-38.1%)
10/2013:Lords Of Mars #3 - 6,491 (-9.6%)

Also starting to smooth out. ====== All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

“Personally I’m not a big fan of artist Art Baltazar, but that’s just my opinion.”

Marc-Oliver Frisch has never said something this cruel! We are no longer friends.

  2. Evan Meadow says:

Cobra Files is done with 9, not Special Missions.

  3. Peter says:

Loving everything Valiant is doing, just wish their numbers were better.

  4. Micah says:

Cryptozoic Man is a throwback to 70’s comics, in both art and tone of story. Walt’s art is leaps and bounds better than his Batman work a few years ago. I was really impressed by the debut.

  5. Andrew Brown says:

sounds like i’m not the only person who buys an image first issue just to see if i want the trade

  6. Really surprised by King’s Watch sales. It’s been such a good book.

  7. JSF: that’s not a surprise to me. Dynamite has made such a bad job on how they sell theirs comics that, now, in the long term, theyr are paying the price. Not caring at all about who is pencilling the interior art and only caring about covers + launching second, third ongoing series and lots of mini on the same franchise, making you drop a book/univers you were ready to follow for 4$ a month (and not 12$!)…
I’m not even taking any chance with issue 1 with them anymore…I know they’re gonna screw up very quickly even if it”s good.
I was devastated to learn they acquired the Gold Key license…

Evan – yeah, spot on, I always get those two mixed up. Suspect SO won’t be far behind though.
Majorjoe23 – sorry, even going back to Patrick the Wolf Boy, he’s just never clicked with me.

  9. I don’t see how Villains Month “added 52 extra titles into the chart.”

The one-shots *replaced* the ongoings for the month. Without looking at the specific charts, while the placement in the chart was greatly changed, the number of titles shouldn’t have changed unless some of the replaced titles sold so poorly that they didn’t chart at all the previous month.

  10. Paul Mellerick says:

Brian – the 3D and the standard editions were counted as separate comics, so they had 104 new 52 comics charting last month.

  11. Mesektet says:

Am I the only one who thinks Walking Dead is poorly written? There is so many great indies that to have this stinker at the top is just baffling.

Kirkman is overrated. everything he writes seems clumsy and amateurish IMO.

  12. Let me first say, I don’t normally read Archie. But I am loving the Afterlife with Archie series. Issue one was such a great read. It got me totally hooked. And at only $3 forsuch a top quality creative team, it was great value. Hoping Sabrina returns, after what happened to her… spoilers! :-)

I would definitely pick up more of their books if they strayed from their normal ‘cookie cutter’ look, like this series does.

  13. Jon Q. Citizen says:

I love all the charts! Thanks for going to so much trouble for us! Glad to see my favorite comic; Saga, is still so high on the chart….and that another of my favorites; Godzilla, is still hanging onto the “magical” top 300.

  14. Al™ says:

I’ve enjoyed the first 2 issues of Afterlife Archie also. Now that I’m over the shock of seeing how dark it all is, it’s a wild ride alright.

  15. Kentucky Fried Horse says:

Glad to see Prisoners of Time will apparently hold up well for it’s entire run. I greatly enjoyed it; I think IDW would be smart to release the whole series as one trade, rather than in parts as they currently are.

Sad to see that Regeneration One is on the low end of the Transformers spectrum, but since it was always set to end at 100 anyway, I guess it really doesn’t matter.

I hope Godzilla: Rulers of Earth can continue to climb back up. It’s not Eisner material, but it’s a fun book.

  16. PeterCSM730 says:

What anniversary was Walking Dead celebrating? Ten years of being in print? I liked the first two issues of Zero (with the completely different artists whom I fortunately both enjoyed) but with the third issue I’m really not seeing where the series is going. It was a pretty silly issue.

  17. Doh! I totally forgot about the separate listings for the 2D covers.

That shows just how much those impacted MY sales…

  18. Paul Houston says:

Afterlife with Archie was a great book, surprisingly good. Not an Archie fan, but I had to pick it up with Francovilla doing the art. I’m glad I did.

  19. Suzene says:

I don’t know if Elfquest has been forgotten so much as most of the EQ fans I’ve met just don’t keep up with pamphlet-type comics. They’ll buy the trades, but every time I ask EQ readers what they think of a new floppy, the usual reaction is surprise that one’s come out.

  20. SCARCE- Xavier Lancel, at least Dynamite got it right with Kings Watch. I agree most of their interior art leaves something to be desired, but the work inside Kings Watch is GORGEOUS! It has a heavy Lee Weeks vibe to it, if you ask me! That’s actually the main reason I’m picking it up!

  21. Paul Mellerick says:

Nathan – if you like Marc Laming’s stuff in Kings Watch you should try out his book The Rinse, which is in a nice TP from Boom.

  22. Jason says:

I feel like if Five Ghosts is having a rough time getting interest that Five Weapons is going to as well. It would have been better to restart them with issue ones for the ongoings rather than resume the numbering.
