A super-rare photo of the elusive crypto-cartoonists Jack Chick — above left holding one of his tracts — has been sighted! Christian author Jimmy Akin posted a purported picture of Chick from a Christian newspaper back in February, but the stunning image has just come to light via ComicsComics.

Chick, author of countless religious tract comics, is the subject of much speculation, and a recluse who has not been photographed in 50 years. His existence was previously only verified in this “artist’s concept” by Akin, who met Chick at a Film Premiere.

Chickologist Eric Reynolds helps unearth a photo of Chick from his high school yearbook and awaits confirmation from other scientists in the ComicsComics comment section:

I’m curious to hear from my friend Robert. Very exciting! He looks more like an artist you’d expect to be drawing MAD. Dan Raeburn would have thoughts on all of this.

  1. I’m always amazed when someone hands me one of his comics or puts one on my windshield. It’s 2007 people! The last one I got was an anti-evolution diatribe that was very… enlightening. Probably not in the way they wanted. Still, I was taken by the way the art style was so different than other Chick comics. Do more than one person make them? Has Chick’s style deteriorated? I thought maybe he was dead and someone else took up the mantle.

    Let the photoshop contests begin….

  2. Wow…i haven’t seen a Chick track in years. I used to come across them pretty regularly as a kid. He wasn’t a bad artist, IIRC. Huh.

  3. Fred Carter was actually the subject of a newspaper feature in California a couple of years ago, when Chick/Carter’s LIGHT OF THE WORLD film came out, and was photographed for the story. Pam Noles wrote it.

  4. Now that we know what he looks like, you MUST check out “Hot Chicks” the DVD of 9 films based on Jack Chick tracts. They didn’t film “Bad Bob”, but there is Bewitched, Titanic, Wounded Children, Cleo, Somebody Goofed a bunch more. It played at the LA Film Festival. And The New Fest in New York and some other festivals. http://www.316now.com for more info and DVD.

  5. I publish a small film magazine called Christian Filmworks. I’d like to do an issue all about Jack Chick movies. If you know of ANYONE (amature, student or pro) that has done a film/video version of a Chick tract comic please let me know and/or send them my way. I’d like to feature thier movie in that issue.

    Thanks,

  7. To the John Martin above,

You should check out “Hot Chicks” which is a film that played at the Los Angeles Film Festival. It is a collection of 9 short films based on Chick Tracts. Scoobie saw it and reviewed it. I bought the DVD and have enjoyed showing it to many friends. You can find more info over at http://www.316now.com

  8. The next time someones sees this illustrious Mr Chick, could you please inform him that bearing prejudice (ie. against the Role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons) and lying are both sins, and I know of a few Christians (who, by the way, do play Dungeons and Dragons) are glad to know that there is a whole level of hell reserved for him when he arrives.

    Peace be with you.
