An update – more of a signal boost, really – as news has come in that Kickstarter was hacked earlier this week. Although they say that the hack has not accessed credit card details, they do recommend that all users change their password for the site with immediate effect.

In a blog post on the site, users of the site are advised to change their login details to protect themselves from any further hack.

While no credit card data was accessed, some information about our customers was. Accessed information included usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and encrypted passwords. Actual passwords were not revealed, however it is possible for a malicious person with enough computing power to guess and crack an encrypted password, particularly a weak or obvious one.

The Beat will be looking into this further as soon as we can.

  1. This really sucks since I just launched my second. Campaign. I’m afraid that my first time backers will shy away from kickstarter now. This throws my projections off. I’ll try to keep people up with my experiences with this issue on my blog.

  2. Yeah, I’m part of a kickstarter campaign (one of several artists) that just launched the day before the announcement. I can imagine the nerves that the organizers are going through.
