When magic happens, it’s not best to wear it out — although Roger Langridge’s announcement that he’s leaving the Muppets is because of a family situation, he also mentions that it was time:

Though probably not on the Muppets. Thing is, I was ready to move on – this personal situation made me jump when I did, but I was looking for an appropriate time to jump anyway. I feel like I’ve done about as much as I can with the Muppet characters – really, I’d rather move on while it’s still fun than carry on grinding away long past the point where I’m enjoying it.

As I say, I’m not quite gone yet – “The Four Seasons” is supposed to appear some time next year, and I’m still working on that until the end of 2010, albeit not as quickly as I normally would. But eagle-eyed Muppet-watchers will probably have noticed by now that The Muppet Show Comic Book didn’t come out this month, and I felt some kind of explanation was in order. So now you know what’s going on. My particular and heartfelt thanks to all the readers out there for your amazing support over the book’s run. Hearing from you, meeting you at shows, has been an absolute highlight of my time with the Muppets.

Langridge got his start with the Muppets back with Disney Adventures — that magazine’s cancellation left his delightful work without a home except for mini-comics Landrigde surreptitiously gave out at shows. The reaction to these minis was so positive and universal that when BOOM! started up their Muppet line of comics, Langridge was the logical candidate. His precise yet loony work on the strip was a reminder of a time when working on licensed characters was a skill in itself, not a stepping stone to a better job,

That said, with THE MUPPET SHOW going away and THOR: THE MIGHTY AVENGER canceled, as you may have heard, Langridge seems to be headed for a new creative phase, family situation permitting. Perhaps with his new higher profile, his own works, such as Fred the Clown, will go on to the huge success they so richly deserve.

Okay, I’m not holding my breath but you know, it’s nice to DREAM.

  1. Best wishes, Roger! In a perfect world, an announcement like this would trigger a bidding war of epic proportions, with publishers flying to London on a daily basis to try and land Roger.

As it is, I’m sure he’s going to make some publisher (and a lot of fans) very happy when he decides on his next project.

  2. I’m *really* sad about this…. I mean, I hope this means more creator owned work, but I’m still going to miss the best corporately owned comic.
