Just to make sure no one skips buying the complete Lost on DVD and Blu-Ray (out August 24) ABC is including a bunch of added scenes that explain who did what to who now, as Kristin Dos Santos reports. The centerpiece will be a kind of “Tale of Hurley and Ben” which follows the two as Island guardians,

“It will address some of the issues, like the food drops, and it will deal with what happened on the island after Hurley took over and how he handled things,” Garcia reveals of the DVD bonus feature he shot. “It will give you a taste of what took place after Hurley took over as the new number one. There’s a little epilogue thing going on with the DVD.”

To answer many of the cries of the faithful, the epilog will also include what happened to Walt, at long last. “The Deeds of Hurley and Ben While They Were Busy Guarding The Island With Their Awesome New Powers” sounds like an ideal spinoff for a comic book, video game or kids’ cartoon series (featuring M’Ress), so keep your fingers crossed.

Since Lost ended, there’s been mucho speculation and analysis and all but the most debated document is this purported tell-nearly-all by a former Bad Robot intern, which we weren’t able to find the original source for:

But, from a more “behind the scenes” note: the reason Ben’s not in the church, and the reason no one is in the church but for Season 1 people is because they wrote the ending to the show after writing the pilot. And never changed it. The writers always said (and many didn’t believe them) that they knew their ending from the very first episode. I applaud them for that. It’s pretty fantastic. Originally Ben was supposed to have a 3 episode arc and be done. But he became a big part of the show. They could have easily changed their ending and put him in the church — but instead they problem solved it. Gave him a BRILLIANT moment with Locke outside the church … and then that was it. I loved that. For those that wonder — the original ending started the moment Jack walked into the church and touches the casket to Jack closing his eyes as the other plane flies away. That was always JJ’s ending. And they kept it.

  1. well, Des and Penny weren’t part of season one. During some of the DVD commentary of past seasons they talked about not knowing what was in the hatch during season one. Shenanigans on the intern!

  2. Agree – although Darlton have always maintained that they knew what the final scene would be, I think the “interns” explanation as to why Ben wasn’t included is 100% speculation on his/her part

  3. Although, having now read the document in question, regardless of whether or not this person is who he says, I really like his take on the show in general and the ending in particular.

  4. So, the loyal tv fans get cheated out of the complete story unless they shell out money to view a dvd addendum. It’s things like this that allow me to remain guiltless about free internet video sites.

  5. You got the complete story as aired on free TV. For an extra epilogue they are charging money.

You should feel guilty, you are stealing.

  6. the original source of that Lost explanation was here

a forum for the Buffalo Bills where someone named tgreg99 posted it (but it since has been deleted but still fully quoted) and he went on to say he was not a writer of the show.

he went on to say about his deleted post

Apparently it’s gone out wider than I ever intended. And it’s being misconstrued as being from the writers of the show (on other sites I guess). Which I’m not. I just wrote it up for our little community here of Bills fans and forgot that we’re actually a part of a way bigger internet community. I don’t want people reading it and assumming it’s THE answer or from the mouths of the show. It’s just my take on it. Didn’t want people to get the wrong idea.

Did not mean to cause a firestorm at all … my apologies. “

  7. I’m sorry, but if there’s an epilogue then we didn’t get the complete story. So, I continue to feel no guilt; besides, if the tv viewing is already free, why should I? Now, if you want to discuss sequel you might have a point.
