Welcome to another month of Marvel sales analysis. This month’s charts are dominated by 3 events and their various tie-in books which make up 28 of Marvel’s books shipped this month, or 1/3 of their output. Let’s look at the monthly breakdown.

76 books in total
7 double shipped books (plus 1 series that shipped more than twice this month)
4 X-Men books (6 if you count X-Factor and X-Force)
5 Avengers books (7 if you count the Ultimates and Marvel Universe Avengers Assemble)
0 Annuals
1 Original Sin Tie-In book
15 AXIS and AXIS Tie-in Books
6 Death of Wolverine and Death of Wolverine Tie-in books
7 Spider-Verse and Spider-verse Tie-in Books
28 of Marvel’s 76 books or 1/3 of their books this month are connected to one of their 3 current events

3 titles over 100,000 copies
4 titles between 75,000 and 100,000 copies
10 titles between 50,000 and 75,000 copies
31 titles between 25,000 and 50,000 copies
28 titles under 25,000
4 $4.99 books
69 $3.99 books
1 $3.95 book
1 $3.50 book
1 $2.99 book

Wow! So that is a lot of AXIS, Spider-Verse, and Death of Wolverine coming out this month. Spider-Verse topped the charts this month, with Axis and some new debuts close behind, but I can’t help but wonder if these events are starting to cannibalize each other’s sales a bit. AXIS seems to be underperforming a bit, and I wonder if people are just getting tired of event after event.

Let’s dive deep into the numbers and look for trends.

As always, thanks to Milton Greipp and ICv2 for information used to compile these charts.

Spider-man takes the #1 spot thanks to the premiere issue of Spider-Verse. The last 7 months have been great for Spider-man sales as only two issues have fallen below 100k. Marvel’s various events or #1 issues may unseat him from time to time but Spider-man is definitely the most consistent seller for Marvel, and Spider-verse seems like it will do very well for the company both in boosting Spider-Man sales and in helping launch several spin-off series such as Silk and Spider-Gwen.

The All-New Captain America starring Sam Wilson Soars high with a 120k debut and while not as strong as Thor #1’s debut, it still looks like it’ll be a very successful relaunch for the character. Interestingly enough, the last relaunch of Captain America at the start of Marvel Now two years ago launched at almost the same numbers.

5. SPIDER-WOMAN
11/14 Spider-Woman #1 - 93,723

Spider-Woman launches at 93k copies. Marvel pulled an interesting move here and launched this book as a Spider-Verse tie-in, so I will be very curious to see how this book does after the next few months to see how the sales are being boosted by the Spider-verse connection.

6 mnth ( 296.4%)

2 year ( -19.0%)
3 year ( 119.0%)

So generally a book sees a 40% drop from issue 1 to issue 2, but sometimes when a book debuts with really high numbers, the drop is even steeper. Thor not only had a great debut but only took the standard 40% drop for issue 2, which bodes very well for it. It also had strong issue 1 re-orders so it is possible that issue 3 or 4 might even see a sales increase as stores adjust their orders to meet demand.

Superior Iron Man debuts 40k copies under recent relaunches like Captain America and 70k copies under Thor, followed by a steeper than normal second issue drop of 50%. It seems like evil Iron Man wasn’t as exciting a rebranding as the diverse new takes on Cap and Thor, or maybe it is just being hurt by tying in so closely to AXIS, which has not been an incredibly strong seller for Marvel.

AXIS is not really selling as strongly as I would have expected. I imagine these numbers would be even lower if it wasn’t being released almost weekly and stores had more time to adjust orders. There isn’t even heavy re-order data in the top 300 for last month’s issues, which is normally expected from large event books. I personally think it might be event fatigue as there wasn’t much of a break between this and Original Sin and Death of Wolverine. Also Spider-Verse is happening at the same time. Perhaps fans’ wallets are stretched a little thin or they just aren’t into the whole inversion idea.

13. Spider-Verse
09/14 Edge of Spider-Verse #1 - 59,237
09/14 Edge of Spider-Verse #2 - 54,415 (-8.1%)[9,570]

11/14 Spider-Verse #1 - 71,232 (35.4%)

Spider-Verse is a 2-part anthology series telling stories of different Spider characters during the events of the main Spider-Verse story which is taking place in Amazing Spider-Man. For the primary event tie-in book, it is doing quite well and selling around 30% less than the main book, but still selling better than the prelude Edge of Spider-Verse which sold around 50k.

The new rebranding of Mighty Avengers launches with a decent 60k but then drops down to 34k for issue 2. While this does fit the normal trend of a 40% issue 2 drop, it does not bode well for the series long term health if it doesn’t stabilize out quickly over the next few months. I also wonder if tying into AXIS right from its debut issue, will help or hurt this book?

Deadpool seems to be benefitting from a tie-in to AXIS as sales rise a bit with people wanting to check out an inverted Deadpool. Of course the boost may just be due to the Rocket and Groot variant program.

Inhumans gets a big boost of 20k issues this month, which is odd because it has no variants and isn’t a part of a big event. However, perhaps this boost is due to the announcement of the Inhumans movie and the recent TV show story arcs that hint at the coming of the Inhumans.

There were two New Avengers issues this month and the first jumped up 4k issues and then the second dropped 6k, for a net loss of 2k. It has been hovering 40-42k for a while now and is probably heading towards some sort of relaunch or rebranding after Secret Wars next year.

39, 70. DEATH OF WOLVERINE: WEAPON X PROGRAM

11/14 DoW: Logan Legacy #5 - 39,367 ( -6.5%)

These Death of Wolverine spin-off series all seem to be selling around 30 to 40k. Luckily most of them seem to be mini-series that will wrap up next month or in January and likely won’t overstay their welcome.

49. SPIDER-MAN 2099
07/14 Spider-Man 2099 #1 - 90,690 ( --- )[6,461]

11/14 Spider-Man 2099 #6 - 38,634 ( -5.5%)

2099 is a pretty stable Spider-man spin-off/Spider-verse tie-in series with a 5% month to month attrition which isn’t great but isn’t terrible either. If the drops shrink to 2% each month, it could maintain a pretty healthy sales number.

11/14 Star Lord #5 – 36,905 ( -0.6%)

This series is very stable with issue 5 selling very close to what issue 2 sold. The upcoming Black Vortex crossover spins out of the events of this book and crosses over with Guardians and All-New X-Men which should help boost this series’ sales.

54. DEADPOOL’S ART OF WAR
10/14 Deadpool’s Art of War #1 - 42,673

Amazing X-Men receives a solid 4k boost likely due to a Rocket & Groot variant but possibly also because of a nice standalone issue from a guest creative team.

58. SCARLET SPIDERS

Team-up is another Spider-Verse anthology series but I’m genuinely unclear what sets it apart from the anthology series called Spider-verse which sold 35k more copies. Perhaps they should have just called this Spider-Verse #2.

Mark Waid and Chris Samnee’s award-winning run on Daredevil continues to sell very steadily, but recent solicits indicate that their run is coming to an end in 2015. So November gave us lots of events and event tie-in books plus several big new debuts. Some succeeded admirably, others not so much. So reader, how have all these events and new launches been affecting your wallet? Are you suffering from event fatigue? Are there any series you are happy to see debut? Any you are sad to see getting cancelled?

Sound off in the comments below and until next month, Keep Reading Comics!

  1. I’m pretty sure that Marvel shipped to stores twice as many copies of Inhuman #8 than what was ordered. That issue arrived the day after the mid season finale of Marvel’s Agents Of SHEILD which was an Inhumans tie-in. I’m really enjoying the book. Wish others felt the same way.

  2. In hindsight it may not have been the mid season finale but the reason for shipping extra issues of Inhuman #8 still had to do with a reveal on the Marvel’s Agents Of SHEILD TV show.

  3. Never quite get why current issues of New Avengers sell less than Avengers (apart from the brand name). It’s chapters of the same story. Are there really people that buy Avengers that do not buy New Avengers? Or are there just lots of unsold copies of Avengers on the shelves?

  4. “Wait [sic] holds the longest run on Daredevil of any creator”

I don’t think so. Bendis was on for at least 5 years and I think Ann Nocenti was around 5 also. I think Waid is at four.

  5. I keep thinking about this. Stan Lee was on longer than Waid also.

And oh man, how could I forget Gene Colon? He drew all but a handful of DD #20-#100, or something like that.

  6. I find it intriguing that Marvel would add a second Inhumans series title given the sales on Inhuman. I wonder if it would make more sense to end Inhuman (call it season one) and make Uncanny Inhumans season two. Technically the Inhumans have a second book thanks to Ms. Marvel. I know the company wants to capitalize off of AoS and the 2018 movie, but we all know that movie/television eyeballs generally do not create a large (or sustained) bump in comic sales.

  7. Glad to see Amazing X-Men #13 got a sales bump, no matter the reason. I’ve enjoyed James Tynion IV’s Marvel output in general and this issue in particular. Here’s hoping he sticks around.

For the Q&A: Overall, Marvel hasn’t had a lot of new stuff that’s wowed me lately, but that doesn’t bother me much. Each new book is a chance to find something I’ll like and I don’t *have* to buy any of it. The events, though, have whittled down my Marvel buys quite a bit: I dropped Magneto and Loki after their first arcs when the solits showed they were going to get side-tracked by AXIS and I gave Mighty Avengers 2.0 a pass for the same reason. I don’t really object to the basic premise of AXIS, but the “Gasp! The good guys have turned evil!” bit has been a staple of superhero stories for a long time now, and I can easily get too much of an old thing.

  8. Marvel might be adding more Inhumans series to seed the backlist for when the movie screens.

Marvel has a few reprint collections scheduled this summer, and given the tie-ins with SHIELD and the movie, will probably be a major event.

Hmmm… has the cinematic universe made any mention of the Celestials’ alterations? What about the Kree experimentation? How did the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver get their powers? (Yes, I know… we have to wait and see.)

  9. Seemingly cancelled with this issue, no further issues have yet been solicited.
    ==================================================================
This comment was listed for Savage Hulk, but it seems to apply for Marvel titles more and more. I just wish that they would announce when and what issue a title is being cancelled. I know some cancellations come rather suddenly, but it seems they could make some kind of announcement somewhere.

  10. I think it’s more surprising that they DO announce cancellations. When a cancellation is announced a percentage of the buyers will immediately drop the book with more leaving as each issue before cancellation arrives. Retailers will drop their orders. Not announcing a cancellation is inconsiderate of the audience but I imagine does minimize losses.

  11. Why would a reader want to drop a title when it’s cancelled? If they are getting the title, presumably they enjoy what they’re reading. Why not buy the last three issues?

As far as Savage Hulk, the second arc was renamed Thanos Vs Hulk to sell better and market better.

  12. @chris – while I don’t personally subscribe to it, I believe the idea is that some readers consider each issue an “investment” of some sort, and if the series is cancelled, then there is no chance of some sort of “payoff” for their “investment.”

  13. I was enjoying Daredevil until they relaunched the book and hiked the price by $1. I got annoyed enough to drop it at that point. I see the sales numbers are just about back where they were before the relaunch, but Marvel is making another dollar per issue, so I’m sure they’re not too unhappy about that.

And I don’t really root against a book’s success, but I always get annoyed when I see a Captain Marvel title on the shelf that doesn’t feature Billy Batson shouting Shazam.

  14. Marvel must not have faith in Spider-Woman if her first issue is an event tie-in. A shame really. Even Bendis’ run was off the back of an event. I think Jessica Drew is a great character with a great history who can stand on her own, she’s got no connection to Peter Parker apart from the name. Why can’t Marvel see that?

  15. Stan Lee, Ann Nocenti, and Brian Bendis all wrote Daredevil for significantly more issues than Waid has amassed.

And it was major news when that issue of Inhuman was complimentarily overshipped to comic shops.

I like the column here, but how do you miss such basic stuff?

  16. Solid column this month! I’ll be sad to see the Waid/Samnee run on Daredevil end… except I keep reading remarks made by Waid implying that he’ll still be on the book even after Samnee leaves!

One has to wonder what the latest Secret Wars announcement will mean for the title, though…

  17. “Never quite get why current issues of New Avengers sell less than Avengers (apart from the brand name). It’s chapters of the same story. Are there really people that buy Avengers that do not buy New Avengers?”

I have not once needed to read a single issue of New Avengers in order to understand what was going on in Avengers. It’s quite satisfactorily standalone.

“Bendis was on for at least 5 years and I think Ann Nocenti was around 5 also. I think Waid is at four.”

If you count in years instead of issues, that is true. But “longest” can be a measure of distance as well, not just time. In issues, Lee and Bendis both did 50 each and Waid has, as of the most recent solicitations, done 52. Nocenti’s run was 53 issues, so Waid will almost certainly surpass her, too, momentarily. In two months, Mark Waid will indeed be the Daredevil writer with the longest run (in issues).
