As predicted/hoped from the ‘Rad’ teaser which showed up a short while ago, Marvel have confirmed that Dan Slott and Mike Allred will be working together on a new Silver Surfer series in March 2014. With these two onboard as the creative team, this could well be the most cosmic and trippy book ever made.

Silver Surfer #1 will bring the Silver Surfer into contact with a woman from Earth, who joins him as he rides around the galaxy on that board of his. The series promises that their relationship – romantic? platonic? – will be the key to at least the first arc, and that the series will be space-set and fantastical in nature.

The first issue of the series will be out in March next year.

  1. I was never much of a Silver Surfer fan, but this cover says so much to me about the untapped potential of the character, even if the write up does sound a little like Dr. Who. Allred’s art never stops getting better and better.

  2. Sold.

That’s a helluva writer/artist combo. I’d normally complain about the $3.99 price tag, but Slott/Allred can’t really be argued with.

  3. “Silver Surfer #1 will bring the Silver Surfer into contact with a woman from Earth.”

Presumably her role will be to say all the cute “hey, you’re naked and ride round on a surfboard?” type lines.

  4. Joe S., you’ve nailed what irks me so much about Slott’s characterizations, or lack thereof. Every non-villian character sounds just like that, and every villain sounds like every other villain.

  5. Joe S. … I think that’s what irks me about “Van Girl” on the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” television series.

That type of character exists, basically, to led credence to the proceedings. Whenever a plot or situation gets over the top, a character like that says something along the lines of “”This is like something out of a comic book.” If you can’t have the Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys yelling at the screen, or the pages, you cast them as characters and have them make snarky comments within the framework of the story.

When the characters begin speaking snark on behalf of the audience, then you’ve begun moving into the realm of fan-fiction.

  6. Not to be misunderstood, I like this artist, I like this character and I like whimsy. AndI understand how the creative team is beyond excited for this project, But this is the wrong approach to the Silver Surfer if this cover hints at whats inside. FF Pt 2 looks like what’s ahead complete with cancellation after the joke’s over. You can joke around with Spiderman, Dr Strange, Hawkeye, many others but the Silver Surfer needs believable pathos, Otherwise, you notice how funny he looks.

  7. Not sold on this view of Silver Surfer. The cover looks like a parody, or just too whimsical. Surfer meets L’il Dot.

  8. (SIGH) I like Slott, I just have no faith in Marvel that they will treat the character as he should be treated. No, I think Marvel and the writers they currently have on staff will tell some off beat story that won’t appeal to the masses and the title will be cancelled in 6 months. The only descent SS story in the last 15 years has been Straczynski’s Requiem and that was outside of the standard Marvel universe. Here’s to hoping they pull it off but not feeling hopeful.
