2923 400X600Variety has the latest comics-to-movies deal: 300’s Gianni Nunnari and Nick Wechsler have optioned OCEAN by Warren Ellis and Chris Sprouse.:

Nunnari and Wechsler will produce, and Craig J. Flores is exec producing.

Story concerns the thousands of coffins containing angel-like bodies, and a giant weapon of mass destruction, discovered by a scientist on Jupiter’s ice-covered moon Europa. A U.N. weapons inspector sent to investigate uncovers a chilling secret about the history of humanity.

[…]Wechsler called the graphic novel “an alien thriller with a fresh take on the origin of man.”

Frankly, we’re surprised more Hollywood types haven’t glommed onto Elli’s high concept oeuvre, although they do have visuals that would require a lot of high budget — unless they didn’t, if you take our meeting.

Have you seen the grosses for Sunshine?
Don’t worry, you’ll find more in spare change in a rental car.
Hollywood has a secret commandment that all science fiction must be rock-stupid to get made.
Wasn’t always this way and there are plenty of modern exceptions, but when the budget goes into the eight- and nine- figures, the IQ ratings heads to double digits.
