Oni Press - Yo Gabba Gabba

The big news from Oni’s panel yesterday was a license for Yo Gabba Gabba, the insanely popular show for young kids and those who think like them. PR below, although the creative team hasn’t been announced — maybe Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer, who write for the show, will be involved.

W!LDBRAIN Entertainment, producers of Yo Gabbba Gabba! and Oni Press, the award-winning entertainment company and the powerhouse indie comic publisher, have teamed up to bring the critically acclaimed preschool television series to comic books. DJ Lance Rock, along with the residents of his magic boombox, Brobee, Muno, Toodee, Foofa and Plex, jump from their hit series and live stage show to the wild world of comics this fall, with the first Yo Gabba Gabba! comics project–Yo Gabba Gabba! Story Comic Book Time Vol. 1.

Yo Gabba Gabba! infuses retro-style, music, and art in a way that is utterly unique, excitingly educational, and entirely entertaining. Oni Press editor in chief James Lucas Jones was an instant fan of the program and immediately saw the possibilities for an innovative and engaging translation to comics. “Seeing the show Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz created was a revelation. These were parents who grew up on the same music, television, movies, comics, and video games I did and it comes through every aspect of the show. In addition to creating a group of charming and iconic characters, they consistently bring in top-notch folks to contribute to the program like Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, House of Fun’s Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer, Biz Markie, the Aquabats and all of the outstanding bands in the Super Music Friends Show. I’m pleased as punch for Oni Press to be joining such a talented and groundbreaking group of creators.”

Yo Gabba Gabba! stars DJ Lance Rock (Lance Robertson) and a cast of colorful characters, including: Brobee, the little green one, Foofa, the pink flower bubble, Muno, the red Cyclops, Toodee, the blue cat-dragon and Plex, the yellow robot. Yo Gabba Gabba Story Comic Book Time Vol. 1. is on store shelves this fall. The first in a variety of planned Yo Gabba Gabba comics, the hardcover anthology weighs in at 128, full color, oversized pages, and is Brobee approved at only $24.99!

Oni had some other news from their panel, which we present in embargoed format below:

Jamie S. Rich, Nicolas Hitore De, and Joelle Jones’ new book SPELL CHECKERS VOL. 1 premieres at C2E2 this weekend. It’s Mean Girls with magic. Buffy the Vampire Slayer without the do-gooder whining. The Craft without the crap goth clothes.  Trust us, if you like bitchy-high-school-girl-dramities you’ll love Spell Checkers!  We chat with Jamie about the book and the volumes to come.  He and Nico are already hard at work on Vol. 2!

Ray Fawkes’ new all ages graphic novel POSSESSIONS VOL. 1 hit #174 on the Top 300 GN list for March.  Ray is attending C2E2 for the official con-premiere of the book and is ecstatic about the reception the book has received since release.  He too is already plugging away at a second volume and chats a little about what he’s got in store for Gurgazon.

Oni Press Free for All will be in stores on FCBD and features an original short story from POSSESSIONS, CROGAN’S ADVENTURES, and SALT WATER TAFFY!

The new series FRENEMY OF THE STATE #1 by Rashida Jones, Christina Weir, and Nunzio Defilippis is on store shelves May 12th.  In the posh world of celebrity gossip everybody has a secret.  Now the CIA has theirs!  Rashida is very excited about the book and chatted about it recently on Bravo’s Whatch What Happens Live!

Roller Derby fans should watch for JAM! TALES FROM THE WORLD OF ROLLER DERBY in June. A new anthology written by members of Derby and illustrated by professional comic artists including: Eric Powell, Monica Gallagher, Allison Blackwell, Ray Fawkes, TJ Kirsch, Dennis Culver, Warren Wucinich, Justin Wagner, Jacqueline Lewis, Jeremy Sorese, Rashad Doucet, Chris Mullins, Paul Salvi, Thomas Boatwright, and more.  With cover art by Joelle Jones.

Issue #1 of GHOST PROJEKT had a great reception from fans and press alike, so be sure to grab a copy of #1 before it sells out.  GHOST PROJEKT #2 is in stores next week.

Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt talk about their new ongoing series, THE SIXTH GUN.  Issue #1 premieres on Free Comic Book Day.  This is the complete first issue of THE SIXTH GUN, not a stand alone or zero issue.  Because FCBD orders have been so high issue #1 of the series, featuring an alternate cover, will be available again July on the same day that issue #2 hits store shelves.  The industry response to the series has been overwhelmingly positive garnishing plugs form some big names: Jason Aaron, Matt Fraction, and Greg Rucka to name a few.

Oni has a new GN series kicking off at this year’s San Diego Comic Con called SUPER PRO K.O.! Vol. 1 by Jarrett Williams.  It’s Shonen Jump meets high-impact, old-school wrastlin’. There’s already been some extremely positive fan reaction just from the preview art and series creator, Jarret Williams, can’t wait for his new fans to read all the action!

Surprise guest, Brobee, from the hit Nick Jr. show Yo Gabba Gabba! makes sure Oni let’s everyone know about the new Yo Gabba Gabba comics that Oni will be publishing! (SEE ATTACHED PRESS RELEASE)

  1. Wow.
Oni is now the leader, among comics publishers, of original graphic novels for kids. Their titles can compete with First Second, Scholastic, and Random House.

With this title, I hope they include a guide for parents. I also hope it’s easy-to-read so that children can empower themselves!

(Hey, Oni! Howabout picking up the Flight Junior anthology?)
