DRAGON is the first ever Kickstarter from Saladin Ahmed, Dave Acosta, Chris O’Halloran, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and Nate Cosby, and it’s available exclusively in hardcover. Writer Ahmed made the announcement Tuesday on Twitter, adding that this comic will be his primary creator-owned project for 2020, and one that he’s been waiting years to tell.

The story is set at the dawn of the Ottoman Empire, described as a dark atmospheric tale in a world rampant with opulent palaces, and bloodthirsty kings. It follows two heroes typically pushed to the margins, uniting to battle against the forces of evil – also known as Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula. Wild, right?

DRAGON tells the story of Adil, a fallen old Muslim warrior, and Marjorie, a zealous young Christian nun, two scarred heroes who must overcome inherited bigotries and mutual distrust to hunt a demonic creature that wears the skin of a prince — Vlad the Impaler, known to history as Dracula.”

Ahmed and the rest of the team are adamant on this book’s physicality. The entire purpose behind taking DRAGON to Kickstarter, rather than a traditionally publishing route, is to create a tome-like hardcover graphic novel with oversized, high-quality paper, and creators’ notes on the process. To emphasize this message, the team is also foregoing all other editions of the book. All backers will get the exact same thing; there are no extra  rewards or higher tiers, aside from an early-bird deal for those who jump on within the first 24 hours.

At this point, the script is complete, art is currently in the works, and letters and colors are expected to be finished by the end of this year, with a delivery date estimated for June 2021, hopefully giving each creator the time to complete their part sans crunch.
