As you have probably heard, Stan Lee was recently presented with a 2008 National Medal of Arts at the White House, a prestigious honor also afforded this year to actress Olivia de Havilland (still alive, to the surprise of many), jazz pianist Hank Jones, the sculptor Jesús Moroles, and the songwriters Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman. While it’s nice that Stan got to dress up and all, we’re also excited by the recognition of the Sherman Brothers, who have but a whistle on our lips over the years with the unforgettable “It’s a Small World (After All)” and such award-winning tunes as “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” and also songs with actual words for titles.

  1. MILITARY AIDE: Stan Lee. (Applause.) The 2008 National Medal of Arts to Stan Lee, for his groundbreaking work as one of America’s most prolific storytellers, recreating the American comic book. His complex plots and humane super heroes celebrate courage, honesty, and the importance of helping the less fortunate, reflecting America’s inherent goodness.

(Please wait until Mr. Lee has left the podium before engaging in snark.)

The Norman Rockwell Museum, which hosts many cartoon and comics exhibitions, was also awarded a National Humanities medal.

  2. In true Stan fashion, I think this is a great opportunity to let everyone know that today sees the release of “STAN’S SOAPBOX: The Collection” a book that will raise much-needed funds for the HERO Initiative.

You know you want it now— after all, Stan is a National Medal of Honor recipient!

  3. I’m just waiting for Blackeye to weigh in with another of his crybaby remarks of how Stan Lee pissed in his Cheerios when he was a little kid.

Maybe Stan can help find the secret location of all those WMDs that Iraq has been supposedly hiding.

I’m leaving the light on for you Blackeye.

  4. Not only is Olivia de Havilland still alive, but so is her sister Joan Fontaine–and they’re STILL not speaking to each other.
