Suicide Squad is the first of a variety of DC movies based on non-Superman or Batman heroes, set for August 5, 2016, and Variety has just listed the cast and it’s a big one:
Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flagg
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress
Tom Hardy already played Bane, making him among many two-timer superhero stars, but it would be Will Smith’s debut as a four-color hero although he played Hancock in…Hancock.
This is obviously a high octane cast, with WB hoping to catch up with Disney/Marvel and their cinematic comics-based blockbusters. They’re said to consider it their “Ocean’s Eleven” for superheroes. David Ayer is the director, with Charles Roven and Richard Suckle producing.
According to Variety, this isn’t all. Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his role as Lex Luthor from Batman v Superman. And the role of Amanda Waller is yet to be cast, but the studio really wants Oprah Winfrey for the role, with Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer also in the running.
Oprah, queen of multimedia and one of the richest people in showbiz, does the occasional acting job and she’d be…interesting in the role.
Suffice it to say no scenery will be left unchewed on this one.
Suicide Squad is about a bunch of supervillains who are given a chance for redemption with one last, possibly fatal mission. The first verions was created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru; the modern version by John Ostrander and Ryan Scott. Other well-regarded runs have been created by Keith Giffen and Kim Yale.
If you can’t wait for the movie, just go read Michel Fiffe’s Copra. It’s just as good!
Oprah being in this would be… astounding. I can’t see it but….
I believe that should be John Ostrander and Kim Yale.
Also, Oprah is the Wall IRL. Perfect casting if it happens.
CCH Pounder would be a great choice to play it and she has the experience of the character already!
I’d say that CCH Pounder, who has voiced Amanda Waller in various animated and video game adaptions, would be an excellent choice for the live action version. She certainly has the authoritative screen presence for the role.

Hm – the casting of Will Smith and Tom Hardy as Deadshot and Flagg is interesting if true – I might have cast them the other way around.
Oprah as the Wall doesn’t work for me – Oprah is too nice so she’s going to have to really play against type to be Waller or Waller is going to be nice and I just don’t see that working.
Joker and Harley Quinn? Why? Are they going to be taking the spots that Punch and Jewlee had in Ostrander’s run? And does Jared Leto know that he’s going to be compared to Heath Ledger no matter how well he does in this movie?
Hey, Warner! Don’t even bother doing the movie if you can’t be bothered to cast CCH Pounder in the role.
PS to DC: John Ostrander should be the one writing the Suicide Squad convergence issues. I’m surprised I have to tell you these things.
