Awards Season: Ware and Stevenson win first Cartoonist Studio Prizes; Spectrum Finalists announced

§ The winners of Slate’s first ever Cartoonist Studio Prize have been announced: Chris Ware and Building Stories in the Best Graphic Novel of the Year category and Noelle Stevenson’s Nimona for webcomics. Winners and finalists were slected by Slat’es Dan Kois selected student from CCS and guest judge Françoise Mouly.

MoCCA announces Awards of Excellence and all-star jury

Wow, this year’s MoCCA Festival just took a major step up in prestige with the announcement of the MoCCA Arts Festival Awards of Excellence, a prize to be awarded to work presented at this year’s show. Picking the prize, a jury of Karen Berger, Gary Groth, Nora Krug, David Mazzucchelli and Paul Pope.

Tom Tomorrow wins Herblock prize

Tom Tomorrow, creator of This Modern World, is this year’s Herblock Prize winner. Established in 2004, and nemed for famed editorial cartoonist Herblock, the prize is given for distinguished examples of editorial cartooning that exemplify the courageous standard set by Herblock and is judged by a panel of outside experts. The finalist this year was Jack Ohman, who left his post at The Oregonian last year.

Oh yeah speaking of the Oscars, Renee Zellweger – WTF. While the actress often looks like she just chomped into a handful of Sour Skittles, last night her eyes seemed to have collapsed into tiny black holes orbiting Alpha Centauri. And what was with mean Richard Gere trying to get her to read on stage? It was obvious girlfriend did not want to wear reading glasses, and was too shy to say anything about it. Either that or she had found the stash James Franco had hidden at the Dolby Theater a couple of years back.

If you’re into writers of the past and present or cartoonists of the future, here’s your chance to help honor someone in either category. Both the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing
— which recognizes comics writers past and present — and the Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award — which recognizes a new artist who is, uh, promising — are open for nominations. Both awards and finalists are chosen by juries, but they accept nominees.

The Slate Book Review and the Center for Cartoon Studies have teamed up for a new cartooning honor: The Cartoonist Studio Prizes. There are two categories—Best Graphac Novel and Best Web Comic—with 10 finalists in each category. Winners will each receive a $1,000 prize

Glyph Comic Awards entry deadline nears: January 31
