I know I tweeted this yesterday, but for those who missed it, the newly revamped Time.com website ran a list of the Top 25 Blogs of 2012. and
The Beat was on the list!

The Beat’s beat is comic books — and it’s been covering it uncommonly well for years. Editor Heidi MacDonald and her intrepid staff report on everything from DC and Marvel’s mass-market products to experimental small-press stuff. Both the quality and quantity of their work make the site a must-read for anyone interested in the art and business of graphic storytelling. It’s the Deadline Hollywood of its field.

A few things about this:

1) It’s an honor to be on the same list as Awkward Family Photos.

2) It’s an honor to have it written up by Harry McCracken.

3) I am incredibly, incredibly proud to have this blurb mention the Beat staff. Even though this is a “personality blog” I have been adding more and more personalities over the last year because I can’t do it all alone and there are other voices who I think fit in with the Beat’s mission statement. Getting those voices heard is incredibly gratifying and, obviously, leads to more and more success. So a huge thank you to old timers Paul O’Brien, Marc Oliver Frisch, Torsten Adair, Jen Vaughn, Todd Allen, Shannon O’Leary and Steven Stahl, and a tip of the hat to more recent recruits Chris Rice, Steve Morris, Jessica Lee, Hannah Means-Shannon, Henry Barajas, and our two new news hawks from NYCC: LTZ and Matt O’Keefe, and our columnists Mike Scigliano and John Shableski.

And thanks to YOU, readers, for your news leads, tips, comments, enthusiasm, links, sharing and being part of the Beat family.

But wait, there’s more! Thanks to the work of Smartbomb, we have a sharp new design and STABLE server, and we can finally roll out a bunch of improvements I’ve been waiting on for a long time. And yes we are still working on a few things—please keep any suggestions coming—but as usual….you ain’t seen nothing yet.

  1. Amazing! I’ve been following since I was in high school and you were on Publisher’s Weekly, so congrats on hitting this landmark in Comics Beat history :)

  2. 88 years to make their “Best of the Century” list!

I have noticed the similarities with “Deadline Hollywood”, but while I have never met Nikki Finke, it seems that Ms. MacDonald has a more cordial relationship with the industry she covers.

  3. Congrats to you Heidi and the rest of the team. But the major part of the kudos are to you Heidi for all the blood, sweat and coffee you’ve poured into this over the years. The Beat has always been a great read and may it continue to be so for a long time to come!

  4. Speaking of your staff, I’ve been enjoying the comic reviews. Makes for one stop comics info shopping, plus your reviewers are a bit tougher and through than the folks at the other sites I read. Now if only you could do something about the site bleeding off my screen on the right!

  5. Congratulations on the honor.

Speaking of the sharp new design, am I the only one who finds the main content window far too narrow?

  6. Very happy for you. Congratulations! What a great feather in the cap. I don’t think there’s any doubt within the comics community that you deserve recognition of this nature — it’s great to see mainstream media agreeing with us.

  7. Congratulations. I hop over here several times daily. Well-worth the accolades.
ps.. Mike Scigliano, ex of DC? One of the nicest guys I dealt with back at the old store I managed. Good to see his name popping up.
