We’ve been following the development a musical based on Alison Bechdel’s classic comics memoir Fun Home for a while, and nowNew York’s prestigious Public Theater has announced its fall schedule and the show will have it’s world premiere in October. A lot less drama than Spider-Man, eh? Here’s the logline:

World Premiere Musical
FUN HOME
Music by Jeanine Tesori
Book and Lyrics by Lisa Kron
Based on the Alison Bechdel book
Directed by Sam Gold
October 1 – November 3, 2013

From four-time Tony Award-nominated composer Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, or Change) and Tony-nominee Lisa Kron (In The Wake, Well) comes a fresh, daring new musical based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Alison Bechdel. When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. Directed by Sam Gold, FUN HOME is a groundbreaking, world-premiere musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes.

Tickets go on sale later in the year.

  1. The dramaturg at my theater company saw it and said it was amazing. (she’s a comic reader as well and holds the source material in high regard)

  2. Jeanine Tesori is an incredible composer. I really hope I get to see Fun Home’s musical production some day. I just recently read the book, and it’s incredible.

  3. Love J. Tesori, love A. Bechdel, and loved FUN HOME (book). But how can they call this a world premiere when it was playing around a year ago at the Public Theatre? Was that technically a workshop or something? Sure wish I could go to NYC and see this.
