After a year of endless speculation—would it be Michael Rooker? Tom Savini? John Hawkes?—the role of The Walking Dead’s ultra-badguy The Governor has finally been cast: English thesp David Morrissey. As we say at Stately Beat Manor, when in doubt, go Brit. Morrissey is a BAFTA-winning actor who has starred in a number of UK productions such as Meadowlands, State of Play, and The Deal.

As WALKING DEAD readers know, as opposed to the somewhat civilized groups we’ve seen so far, The Governor is a sadistic overlord who rules his band of survivors through cruelty and brutality.

In other words, say goodbye to those optimistic, carefree stories you’ve gotten used to. The Governor will be the centerpiece of Season 3, which has been expanded to 16 episodes.

Still to be cast: sword-wielding badass Michonne.

  1. He was in Blackpool with David Tennant. And then he played the title character in “The Next Doctor.”

  2. So another Brit to play an American part. Great actor but it really should have been John Hawkes from Deadwood in the role.

Should be interesting to see how far they go with the storyline…

  3. John Hawkes got my vote as well.
Michonne – actor would need some
solid skills to fit my mental image of her.
Typical HWood sword choreography won’t do it.

  4. I pray it is not Rutina Wesley. She looks the part but she is one of the most annoying actresses I’ve ever seen.

Luckily, her TRUE BLOOD role should prevent this!

  5. The cruel cruel sadistic governor ruling a town full of gun toting people in Georgia? Maybe for a day and then somebody nicer gets a turn at being governor.

  6. The guy from The Next Doctor? WOW! I loved that story, and particularly at the end of the episode when he showed some great acting as his memories came flooding back. The guy definitely has the chops for this… but I think I will be in for a bit of a shock when we see him embrace such a dark and brutal role.

As mentioned above, I’m wondering how far they are going to take this storyline. There’s a lot of stuff in the comics that would be difficult to show on TV.

Have you seen the season finale of the last season of True Blood?

  8. Oh, The Walking Dead on AMC, you remind me so much of the Star Wars prequels. I watched every single one hoping they would get better and ended up being completely disappointed. This show was Frank Darabont’s puppy. Without him, we are seeing how bad it is.
