The big event this week is the New York Comic Con at the Jacob Javits Center from Friday through Sunday, but there are plenty of other comic-related events happing coast-to-coast:

Tuesday, February 3

Montreal, QC, 7 PMKASPAR book launch at Drawn & Quarterly

Diane Obomsawin (AKA Obom) launches her new book, KASPAR, from Drawn & Quarterly, with a presentation and vernissage at D&Q’s 211 Bernard bookstore. Her original artwork for the book, which tells the mysterious story of a man who appeared on the streets of Nuremberg in 1828 with no personal history or language to speak with, will be gracing the bookstore’s walls at the launch.


Tuesday, February 3

New York, NY, 7 PMJules Feiffer talks “Comics and the Jewish American Dream”

Jules Feiffer, whose cartoons appeared in The Village Voice for 42 years, is the second cartoonist featured in the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research’s series of on-stage interviews conducted by Danny Fingeroth (THE ROUGH GUIDE TO GRAPHIC NOVELS). Admission is $25. EDIT: YIVO’s Director of Cultural Affairs, Harold Steinblatt, writes to tell us that the admission is just $10 if you say the password “Jules.”

New York, NYBrian Lee O’Malley in NYC

To celebrate the launch of SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE UNIVERSE, cartoonist Brian Lee O’Malley makes a mini-tour of New York’s comics scene. On Tuesday, O’Malley will appear at Comic Book Club, the weekly live talk show at The People’s Improv Theatre at 8 PM (admission is $5). Then it’s over to Jim Hanley’s Universe in midtown for a midnight signing and release party. The next day Rocketship in Brooklyn hosts another signing from 7 PM – 9 PM. Both signings will feature exclusive Pilgrim gear for sale.


Thursday, February 5

Portland, OR, 6 PM – 10 PMScott Pilgrim 5 release party

Over on the West Coast, Floating World Comics hosts a release party for SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE UNIVERSE, with lots of rare merch on sale. It is also opening night for an exhibition of found photos at Floating World, featuring original found art and a slide show!


Friday, February 5

New York, NY, 5 PM – 7 PMMichael Golden, Mark Texeira and Steve Scott signing

Michael Golden, Mark Texeira and Steve Scott will be signing at the opening of Illustration House’s new “Astonishing Art” sale, which features original work from over a dozen legendary comics artists, including Jack Kirby, Bruce Timm and John Buscema.


Saturday, February 6

Boston, MA, 9 PM – MidnightShepard Fairey exhibition opens

Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art opens the first museum survey of Shepard Fairey, the street artist behind the iconic Obama poster and the Obey Giant stencil. Running through August 16, Shepard Fairey: Supply and Demand will feature over 80 works, tracing the artist’s career over two decades. The exhibition will kick off with a party DJ’d by Fairey himself. Tickets are $25.


Saturday, February 7

Sherman Oaks, CA, 1 PM – 2:30 PMGregg Hurwitz at Earth-2 Comics

Crime novelist-turned comics scribe Gregg Hurwitz (PUNISHER) signs at Sherman Oaks retailer Earth-2 Comics.


Saturday, February 7

Cranberry Township, PA, 3 PM – 5 PMP. Craig Russell at New Dimension Comics

Artist P. Craig Russell (KILLRAVEN, THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG) will be signing copies of the his comic adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s CORALINE at New Dimension Comics’ Cranberry Township location the day after the film based on Coraline debuts in theaters. Anyone who purchases a copy of CORALINE will receive a free Coraline tee-shirt.


Saturday, February 7

Seattle, WA, 6 PM – 9 PMUnlovable exhibition opening and book launch

Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery hosts an exhibition of original art by Esther Pearl Watson from her book UNLOVABLE, which will debut at the event and features visual interpretations of a teenager’s diary from 1985 which was found in a gas-station bathroom. Musical entertainment will be provided by Rusty Willoughby.

    New York’s longest running comics event, the Ho12 Comic Jam, this Thursday, Feb. 5, 7 pm at Jack Demsey’s Pub, half a block from Jim Hanley’s Universe. 36 West 33rd street, in the basement.

    Come on out and join some of New York’s hottest indie/alt/underground cartoonists as they get drunk and draw comics together. 21-over please.
