MakingcomicsScott McCloud kicks off the MAKING COMICS express for real today at Midtown Comics at Times Sq. Stop by so you can say you were part of the happening!

In 1993 when Scott McCloud published his groundbreaking book UNDERSTANDING COMICS (HarperPaperbacks; 006097625X), he tore down the wall between high and low culture. Linking the medium to such diverse fields as media theory, movie criticism, and web design, McCloud explained how illustrated stories could no longer be thought of as a child’s plaything. UNDERSTANDING COMICS has inspired a generation of comic readers and artists, as well as reinvigorated the art form as a whole.

Now, in MAKING COMICS (HarperPaperbacks; SEPTEMBER 5, 2006; 0-06-078094-0), McCloud focuses his analysis on the art form itself, exploring the creation of comics, from the broadest principles to the sharpest details (like how to accentuate a character’s facial muscles in order to form the emotion of disgust rather than the emotion of surprise.) And he does all of it in his inimitable voice and through his cartoon stand-in narrator, mixing dry humor and legitimate instruction. McCloud shows his reader how to master the human condition through word and image in a brilliantly minimalistic way.

McCloud will sign copies of his new book at Midtown Comics Times Square location on

Friday, September 8th from 5 to 7:00PM.
