As of this writing, the WATCHMEN trade paperback is the #1 selling BOOK on Amazon.com. Not graphic novel. BOOK.

Sweet.

  1. But will anyone buy it after this weekend? This book has been sold to everyone on the planet. Will it ever sell again? Will it lose its “evergreen” status?

Does it matter, given the number of Watchmen books sold in the last year?

  2. BN.com:
Trade Paperback edition: #4 (highest I’ve seen)
    Hardcover edition: #54
    Watchmen: The Absolute Edition: #386

Evergreen status? Well, it remained in print for twenty years without any hype behind it. So, I think it’s set. Did “Love in the Time of Cholera” lose it’s “evergreen status” after the movie tanked? “Bonfire of the Vanities”? “I, Robot”?

The movie ending did allow for a sequel. Then there was the Minutemen prequel Moore and Gibbons planned before Moore and DC parted ways.

Torsten’s Law of Movie Adaptations: No matter how awful a movie adaptation of an original novel might be, the novel will continue to sell as the viewing public realizes that the book was good enough to base a $20+ Million movie upon.

(Whoa… there’s a vinyl LP of the soundtrack!)

  3. Its at #2 on Amazon UK, right behind ‘grow your own drugs’ which was a TV show on tonight

    1. Grow Your Own Drugs: Easy Recipes for Natural Remedies and Beauty Fixes: Easy Recipes for Natural Remedies and Beauty Treats by James Wong £16.99 £7.64

    2. Watchmen by Alan Moore £17.99 £8.09

  4. Actually if DC was smart they would have started on a sequel to Watchmen a while ago. I’m sure Dave Gibbons is game and even if he’s not any top tier artist would do.
Of course Alan Moore won’t have anything to do with it but there are many talented creators that would jump at the chance to do a sequel to Watchmen.

Personally I’m dying to find out what Dr. Manhattan is up to these days.

  5. Amazing. I’m all smiles, just like that Comedian dude. I hope Dave Gibbons is making $#!+loads of money off of all this stuff. He sure deserves it. I guess that Moore guy does, too. :)

  6. Doctor Manhattan fetched up on the surface of an Earth-like world in the opposite spiral arm to ours, where he set about creating his own race of sentient organoids.

Like any good god, he made them in his own image, although he soon found that speech centres are, how shall we put this, a little bit tricky?

    Fiat Smurf.

A Watchmen sequel should be resisted at all costs – even if Alfred Hitchcock came back to life to write it and Composite Toth condensed three-fold out of Ideaspace to draw it, it could never measure up to the original.

    But just in case…

    Jon Hollis IS! NIGHT-SHARK.

Patrolling the streets and alleyways of New York City, the son of Nite-Owl and The Silk Spectre takes on the mantle of vigilante-martyr Rorschach and, combining it with his father’s inventions and mother’s relentless physical conditioning, turns it against an America left confused and cynical by the events of Watchmen Vol. 1.

But a visit to the ruined Veidt Tower leads Jon Hollis on a quest to stop the American government from repeating the experiment that created Doctor Manhattan – a quest that will require him to pull off the miracle to end all miracles: getting his estranged parents back together…

    See? Now it can’t happen!

    //Oo/\

  7. The should have a Charlton mini-series set on their multiverse version of Earth. Similar plot but featuring the actual Charlton characters true to their original stories.

  8. Sequel? How about a story using characters based on the Justice League? They could try to create a utopia… Get a seasoned pro to write it…someone like Mark Waid or Roy Thomas or Mark Gruenwald or even Neil Gaiman!

After DC 52’d their universe, they created a Charlton Universe . If memory serves, it has the same historical milleau as Watchmen.

hurm… what if there was a Ditko universe with all of his heroes and villains?

  9. So i bought it too. Why is it so boring? Its hard to get through. And those text pieces in between…ZZZZzzz.

  10. Yeah a collection of origin stories of the Charlton based Watchmen characters would probably do well, even if they’re crap stories. Just stick Watchmen on the cover somewhere and some writing about their creations/creators and comparison/tying them into their other versions.

Of course they should have thought about this like 9 months ago…

  12. Watchmen sequel to comic.
Dr. Manhattan comes back to Earth and goes back in time and watches himself. Everyone things its a dublicate, which it is, but this Dr. Manhattan changes time around saving New York.
    Dr. Manhattan vs. Dr. Manhattan!
    Rorschach never died!

    Me want this!
