Maybe it’s just because we’re not going, so no one thought to invite us, but our notes on WonderCon parties are more scattered than ever. Please feel free to chime in in the comments with additional events:

iFanboy and Isotope Tiki Tour

This year our featured special guest host is Darick Robertson, artist of The Boys and Transmetropolitan!

We’ll be starting out early meeting up at 111 Minna for the CBLDF party w/ our pal Dave Johnson and then kicking off the tour in high style with a first tiki stop at the amazing Tonga Room at 9pm. Judging by the folks who we’ve spoken to about this event already I have a feeling this will be the best Tiki Tour ever!

We’ve been hosting semi-annual secret-route tours of San Francisco’s tiki bars since 2001 but don’t want you to feel left out, so for those among you who have yet to experience one of the Isotope’s famous tiki tours hosted by some of the coolest cats in the comic industry, feel free to check out these great photos from the legendary 2006 tiki bar madness tour or video from our 2007 tour with comic author Adam Beechen and our friends at iFanboy!

  1. The Cartoon Art Museum’s Annual WonderCon Weekend Party was out of control. It would’ve been worth the price of admission to see one of the four shows on display. But the four of them, plus the party that accompanied, was mind-blowing.

The permanent collection alone is pretty spectacular and a nice little cousin to the Masters of American Comics shows L.A. hosted at the Hammer and MOCA a few years back. Nothing tops seeing actual Segar “Popeye” pages, The Little King, Bushmiller’s “Nancy,” etc.

It took us a good hour to get past the opener — the original pencil and inked pages of the Gene Colan exhibit — which featured a dazzling array of his atmospheric originals, from TOD stuff to the cover of IRON MAN # 1 and CAPTAIN MARVEL # 1. Of note were the HOWARD THE DUCK pages, inked by Steve Leialoha, who was as friendly and accessible a creator as ever, genially entertaining friends nearby.

The WATCHMEN-related art of Dave Gibbons exhibit was a revelation, even if you’re a casual fan of the graphic novel. Gibbons’ conceptual art, character design sheets, miniscule ink thumbnails of his pages, and the final art itself (all flanked by glass cases showcasing the costumes from the movies) were all quite wonderful to behold. He’s a master draftsman, and there was something stellar about seeing the art in black and white, uncolored (sorry, baby blue man (hattan)!).

And then there was the exhibit of original ink pages by my fellow CAPS comadre Stan Sakai — “Usagi” pages representing 25 years of work that will also be highlighted at Comic-Con this summer. It was great to see Stan and Sharon Sakai, Sergio Aragones, and other crazy CAPSers/cartoonists —the L.A. contingent—in the hizzay!

    That and the free booze!

    Wow.
