Premiere auction house Goldin had the attention of Pokémon and One Piece collectors when the Summer TCG Auction closed this Sunday, August 9. The auction was part of Goldin’s ongoing celebration of the Pokémon 30th anniversary. The Summer TCG Auction featured a classic 1999 Pokémon Base Set cards and Promo 64 cards alongside collectibles tied to the dominant One Piece brand.
The Promo 64 marks a particularly interactive and cool time in Pokémon history: in 1999, upon the release of the Nintendo 64 Pokémon Snap video game, the Japanese television show 64 Mario Stadium held a contest in which entrants could submit their best snapshots of Pokémon from the video game, with Pokémon producing special promo cards of the best snaps.
Goldin’s Summer TCG Auction had six items break the over half-a-million-dollar mark each, totaling over $18 million in sales. The auction set the record for the most expensive One Piece TCG card ever sold with the auction of the 2024 One Piece Chinese Year One World Championship 1st Place Monkey D. Luffy Trophy Card. Pokémon TCG cards also broke records in this auction, like a 1999 Pokemon Japanese Promo Corocoro Best Photo #1 Snap Bulbasaur – PSA NM-MT 8, which sold for $809,943, becoming the all- time record sale for a Bulbasaur card and a 1999 Pokemon Japanese Promo 64 Mario Stadium Best Photo #4 Snap Charmander– PSA NM – MT 8, which sold for $640,500 breaking the all- time record sale for a Charmander card.
