Five years after the Hellboy film reboot starring David Harbour as the titular character fizzled at the box office, fans are hoping the latest attempt will do the Mike Mignola character justice. Yesterday the first Hellboy: The Crooked Man trailer was released.

Rather than attempt yet another origin story, the film is taking a much different approach adapting a self-contained three-issue miniseries written by Mignola and drawn by Richard Corben.

Stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia, Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent disover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.

Portraying Big Red this time around is actor Jack Kesy. Also along for the ride is Adeline Rudolph as BPRD agent Bobbie Jo Song as well as Jefferson White as Tom Ferrel, Leah McNamara as Effie Kolb, Joseph Marcell as Reverend Watts, Hannah Margetson as Cora Fisher, and Martin Bassindale in a dual role as both Professor Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm and the Crooked Man.

While Mignola has had involvement in every Hellboy film in some capacity, for Crooked Man he co-wrote the screenplay with Christopher Golden. The film was directed by Brian Taylor who’s no stranger to supernatural comic movies having helmed Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set to arrive in theaters later this year. Stay tuned for release detail announcements.

  1. “While Hellboy has had involvement in every Hellboy film in some capacity, for Crooked Man he co-wrote the screenplay with Christopher Golden.” Renaissance man!

  2. I was a little excited, right up until “…having helmed Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”. Now I’ll wait to be surprised.
