Next month Dark Horse Comics will debut It’s Only Teenage Wasteland. The new series, described as “a coming-of-age post-apocalyptic” story, comes from the creative team of writer Curt Pires, artist Jacoby Salcedo, colorist Mark Dale, and letterer Micah Myers. As the preorder cutoff date for the first issue of the series approaches, The Beat is pleased to debut an exclusive first look at a new variant cover for the issue by The Department of Truth artist Martin Simmonds.
Here’s how Dark Horse describes It’s Only Teenage Wasteland:
When his parents go out of town for the weekend, Mexican-American high schooler Javi decides to throw a party—one that’ll launch him and his buds into popularity! Or at least get them noticed by their crushes. But when things take a turn for the worse, Javi and his friends are thrust into a situation and future they could have never have prepared for.
In talking with The Beat about the series, writer Curt Pires described a few of the creative team’s influences for the book:
“I’m so excited to be teaming up with Jacoby and Dark Horse on this book. With It’s Only Teenage Wasteland, we’re alchemizing the best parts of hilarious coming-of-age movies like Superbad and Booksmart with the high concept mystery storytelling of Lost and Yellowjackets. Beyond the buzzy comps, it’s one thing most importantly: damn good comics. I’m looking forward to taking readers on a memorable journey with our brilliant characters and creative team.”
Check out Martin Simmonds’s variant cover for It’s Only Teenage Wasteland #1 (of 4), as well as a preview of interior pages from the issue, below. The variant cover is open-to-order for retailers who order 10 copies of the issue’s main cover (seen above). All covers for the issue are due out on Wednesday, December 7th, and have a final order cut-off date of next Monday, November 14th.
