Get ready for the newest salvo of Battle Action from Rebellion as a preview of the two stories running in next week’s Battle Action #1 has been unleashed. The first issue hits UK comic shops and the Treasury of British Comics webshop on August 28, with it expected to hit US shores October 3 (Previews code: JUN241947).
Battle Action (2024) will be a ten issue monthly series releasing in the UK every last Wednesday of the month. The opening issue will feature two 15-page stories: the first will be Johnny Red, by Garth Ennis and Keith Burns, and the second will have new face Brian K. Vaughan make an appearance alongside Chris Burnham for their take on vintage (Battle) Action series Kids Rule OK.
Garth Ennis and Keith Burns have been on a roll with a solid take on the Johnny Red character created by Tom Tully and Joe Colquhoun in 1977. Their acclaimed eight issue Titan miniseries will be rereleased alongside new material from the recent revivals in a January 2025 collection. The current storyline taking place is reportedly Johnny’s last(!)
This Battle Action will be the third time that Garth Ennis has helmed a revival of the characters from the fondly remembered amalgamation of war comic Battle and controversial stablemate Action. Since 2022, Ennis has gone from a one-off special to a five issue miniseries, and now a ten issue series. Not bad going.
From the Rebellion press release:
“Blazing Battle Action on each page! Garth Ennis and Keith Burns reunite for a 10-issue maxi-series which tells the final story of Johnny Red, aerial ace!
“Johnny Redburn’s battle against the German Luftwaffe continues into the final year of the Second World War – but Johnny’s long war has taken a toll on him, and his bravery now edges towards recklessness. Will he make through the last months of the war?
“Then! In a guest feature, writer Brian K. Vaughan makes his Battle Action debut, joined by artist Chris Burnham for a shocking post-apocalyptic fable! In a hostile future London where Kids Rule, a young American boy runs for his life from a mob of xenophobic British Punks – but he has a secret weapon they aren’t expecting…”
