Humanoids’ next graphic novel, Total Suplex of the Heart, leans into the heartbreak of wrestling in the best way according to The Beat‘s own Ricardo Serrano Denis. Written by Joanne Starer and partially based on her experiences in wrestling, drawn by Ornella Greco, and lettered by Nathan Kempf, Total Suplex of the Heart follows freelance journalist Georgie as she dives into the wrestling world.
Georgie grew up loving wrestling and comics, but she never fit into the cool crowd. Now, she’s an adult determined to show her mom she can get a job that isn’t just a freelancing gig, so she goes undercover in the local hardcore wrestling scene for an investigative article. Immediately, she gets caught up in the drama until it all becomes too much, forcing her to reconsider who’s got the power in her life and whether she likes the road she’s walking.
“Total Suplex of the Heart is an incredibly personal story for me. It borrows from my formative years as a teenager, navigating my way through eating disorders, toxic relationships, and my own self-worth, all while working in the wild world of pro-wrestling,” Starer said in the announcement. “I can only hope it strikes a chord with readers who have experienced some of these same struggles.”
Greco added, “It was exhilarating working on Total Suplex of the Heart because of all the drama, romance, and action on every page! It’s been quite a ride following Georgie’s journey of self-discovery in the pro wrestling world, and I hope everyone else enjoys it as much as I have.”
