Superman, the new film about the Man of Steel written and directed by James Gunn, has been filming in Cleveland this week, and it was not a closed set, apparently. The interwebs have been flooded with photos of David Corenswet in costume as Supes, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois. Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific has also been spotted. We’ll get sued if we run the photos but we can embed tweets all day.

The photos of Corenswet as Clark Kent revealed a very full head of hair. Alarmingly full perhaps. The man is blessed with follicles.

Although Gunn revealed the costume previously, the set photos allowed us to enjoy more details: this version of Superman has gained the red underwear on the outside, but lost the fake abs of recent versions costumes. Let’s call it what it is: a throwback.

And comics pros – some who even worked on Superman – voiced their thoughts. Mostly on FB. The overall vibe was positive:

Erik Larsen:  “The new Superman uniform is a step up from the Man of Steel one.

The colors are better–the texture is less abrasive, it’s not as shiny, the shorts take the emphasis off his dong–but it’s still not a great costume. He won’t be able to convincingly wear it unnoticed under his street clothes and be able to pull his shirt open and reveal his chest emblem.
They can always just have Superman’s uniform exist under Clark’s suit when they need it to be there if they want that shirt opening moment. But it’s clearly bulky. It looks like a wetsuit.
I’m sure Christopher Reeve didn’t wear the entire Superman outfit under Clark Kent’s street clothes and when he did pull apart his shirt to reveal the S–it’s likely the only piece of the costume he had on was the top under his shirt.
There are ways to fake this stuff. Peter Weller couldn’t wear RoboCop’s legs and be seated in a police car, so he didn’t and they filmed around that.
But I expect he will largely look like Superman when he’s in motion.
So–I don’t completely hate it.
My 2¢.”

Jamal Igle:  This..makes really, really happy.

Is it 100% comics accurate? Yes, and no. It’s a blend of the traditional suit and the new 52 suit, but it looks fantastic. Look at those colors! That cape? Fantastic!”

José Villarubia: “Ok, I’ll bite. It looks like my feed is full of opinions on the newly revealed Superman costume for the movie. I don’t have a dog in that fight, but my preference would be that they did a costume without all the piping and textures and with proportioned “underwear”, not high like Reeve’s, low like Ruth’s or boxy like the new one. This version from the Superman and Lois TV show comes the closest to how I envision it. But, honestly each person has their preference.”

Mark Waid: “I’m good with this.”

Many more opinions in the comments including some haters.

Opinions were very positive for Mr. Terrific, seen in the 1997 version by John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake. Mrs. Maisel as Lois Lane also did not draw fan disdain.

My opinion? I like James Gunn movies, so I’m hopeful we’ll get a decent movie out of this. These costumes look wearable and I don’t really let whether they are accurate or not upset me. I’m still wondering about Clark’s hair though.

Superman releases on July 11, 2025, and will kick off the new DCU slate of interconnected films, a plan that was still hatched when sueprhero movies are all the rage. They’ve cooled off a bit, but we haven’t had a good Superman movie in quite a while, so maybe this will get people enthused enough to leave their homes and enter a movie theater. These set photos certainly got people talking.

Piping or no piping? Abs or no abs? Too much hair? Let us know in the comments.
