Graphic novels recognized by ALA awards and YALSA
The early award season for books is here, and earlier this week the American Library association handed out a slew of literary awards. As has been the recent trend, several graphic novels were recognized among the pictureless books:
Slate and CCS announce finalists for inaugural Cartoonist Studio Prize
The Slate Book Review and the Center for Cartoon Studies have teamed up for a new cartooning honor: The Cartoonist Studio Prizes. There are two categories—Best Graphac Novel and Best Web Comic—with 10 finalists in each category. Winners will each receive a $1,000 prize
Glyph Comic Awards entry deadline nears: January 31
Johanna Draper Carlson wrote to remind us that the entry deadline for the Glyph Comic Awards is January 31. The Glyph Comic Awards recognize the best comics made by, for, and about people of color. Carlson is one of the judges this year. Entry guidelines:

Eleanor Davis wins Gold Medal from Society of Illustrators
The Society of Illustrators has announced medalists in their Sequential/Series, Institutional, Uncommissioned, and Moving Image categories. SoI doesn't really give awards in comics, but the Sequential/Series category covers work that requires more than one image, so it's mostly comics.
Mary and Bryan Talbot win Costa Award for biography
A nice capstone for a year of graphic novel triumph as Dotter of Her Fathers Eyes by Mary and Bryan Talbot has won the Costa Award for best biography. The Costa is a respected UK literary prize, and the Talbots win is emblematic of wider acceptance, says the Guardian
