Man this is really the year it all HAPPENS isn't it? The Costa Awards are a prestigious literary prize in the UK, and this year two graphic novels were included in the shortlist of finalists.

It's time for the year-end lists to start coming thick and fast. Amazon is out of the gate with their list of the year's best graphic novels and to no one's surprise, Chris Ware's Building Stories leads the pack.

Grant Morrison models his Member of the British Empire medal which he was just presented with. And no, you cannot call him Sir Grant, as that honorific only comes with the two highest orders of the British empire.

I know I tweeted this yesterday, but for those who missed it, the newly revamped Time.com website ran a list of the Top 25 Blogs of 2012. and The Beat was on the list!

The nominees have been announced for the Shel Dorf Awards 2012. The awards nominate a lot of the usual incredibly talented suspects, with books like Daredevil, Batman and Walking Dead all receiving multiple nominations....

The 2012 Joe Shuster Awards, honoring the best in Canadian comics, were handed out on Saturday, September 15th at the Montreal Comic-Con. Jason Rockman and Catherine Smith-Desbiens handed out the awards--check the link for jury comments on the winners.

Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez were the big winners at last night's Ignatz Awards with wins in three categories. The awards were presented in front of a packed house (as usual) at a ceremony MC'd by Jerzy Drozd. In addition to the categories below, Richard Thompson was presented with the first ever Golden Brick Award, for lifetime achievement.

It was a year for considering what has changed and what has stayed the same in comics at the Harvey Awards. While a new MC, Phil LaMarr, took the stage, many of the nominees for the awards appeared pretty evenly stacked between superhero works from Marvel and DC and indie publishers with a wide variety of material from adult to all-ages content. Another feature of the nominations was the predominance of multiple nods to the same works, leaving a certain amount of anticipation not just about what works and creators would win a Harvey, but even about how many Harveys might one particular nominee might garner.

The 2012 Harvey Awards were given out on Saturday night at the Baltimore Comic-Con. The big winner was the superhero favorite DAREDEVIL with wins for Best Series, Best New Series, Best Inker and Best Writer. Kate Beaton won three, with Best Online Comics Work, the Special Award for Humor, and Best Cartoonist. Jim Henson's TALE OF SAND by Ramon Perez, also won two, Best Original Graphic Album and Best Story.

Up at the official blog, the poster for the 2012 Joe Shuster Awards has been unveiled, a design by Tyrone Biljan as an homage to Expo '67 posters. The awards, presented to the best in Canadian comics, will be given out during the Montreal Comic-Con:
