The International Best Comics Poll picks top ten
Recently, the Hooded Utilitarian polled a bunch of comics-type people to answer the question "What are the ten comics works you consider your favorites, the best, or the most significant?" The results of the poll have been unveiled this week. Over 200 replies were received, so it's a pretty representative sampling. The #1 was revealed this morning and it's not a big shocker -- neither are any of the other Top 10:

Convention Report: Swedish SPX 2011
In spite of the dramatic international intrigue Sparkplug Comic Books and its affiliates faced at the Canadian border on the way to TCAF last weekend, we managed to simultaneously invade a whole other continent at Stockholm Sweden’s 11th Annual SPX Festival. Sparkplug was honored to be invited to the festival for the 3rd year in a row along with many other hella distinguished international guests.
TWISTED SAVAGE DRAGON FUNNIES Collection goes bizarro
It's Image's answer to STRANGE TALES or BIZARRO COMICS -- an indie comics take on one of their best known characters. We're talking about TWISTED SAVAGE DRAGON FUNNIES, a back-up feature in the long-running regular series, edited by Michel Fiffe and featuring the best talents in today's alt.comix world taking on Erik Larsen's green and strong super-cop. A collection of these tales is due this July, an oversized 144-page book with contributions by everyone from Benjamin Marra to Kris Mukai
Editorial: What The Rob Granito Scandal Tells Us
As everyone has probably already heard (just scroll down the page), Rob Granito is a plagiarizing conman. He claimed to have done work for DC and Marvel, been the secret hand behind Brian Stelfreeze and, hilariously, to have worked on Calvin and Hobbes, and sold direct copies of other people's work with a few scribbles on top for hundreds of dollars. Not the usual pose tracing for a different use or character, but direct copies, with perhaps an arm moved slightly. And he did it for years.
Artists known to have been plagiarized includes Jan Duursema, Tim Sale, Bruce Timm, Mark Bagley and Ivan Reis among others. As a response to this, the website Legit-o-mite.com has been started as a clearinghouse for evidence of direct plagiarism and fraud like this, on the part of Granito or any other artist.
A Blast From The Past: Meanwhile…
During C2E2, I discovered some old issues of Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld in the quarter bins. I knew of this series, but had not read any comics of the character. I have an eight-year-old niece who loves Wonder Woman, and thought she might enjoy another super-powered princess.
Rob Granito: The man who got drummed out of comics
The comics community is an accepting one--perhaps the most accepting. The greatest masters feel a kinship with someone who makes mini-comics, and will make time for them. It's a giving, friendly group of people who share a passion for comics and a collegial sense of belonging.
But then there's Rob Granito.
SXSWi 2011: Kids, Kids, Kids and Delicious Blood
Dawn broke over the town and I slept the hell right through it. The panels of SXSW Interactive did not start until the afternoon and like a true ol' fogey, I spent the morning walk to the Austin Convention Center complaining about the businesses that had closed and what had been thrown up its place. Kerbey Lane with local art on the walls and pancakes of the day made the list of places to eat because the queso is an optional side like ketchup or chipotle mayo (I guess that one is rather new too).
