MoCCA Fest 2012 announces guests: Russell, Panter

0
MoCCA Fest 2012 has finally announced its guests and begun rolling out other activities—and they have a brand new dedicated website, above, to do so. P. Craig Russell is the guest of honor—which explains the exquisite rococo ad we've been running for the past month -- and Gary Panter will be presented with the Klein Award, MoCCA's lifetime achievement honor.

Mike Carbo wraps it up with one last con and Stan Lee

0
We knew there was a Big Apple/New York Comic Market Con this weekend at the Penn Plaza Hotel...but we did not realize it was the LAST show to be put on by Mike Carbonaro. But it is. Carbonaro, an inescapable figure on the NY comics scene, has some 40 years of selling comics behind him (he started as ateen like so many of us) but really got on the NYC map with the famed "Church Con" of '96 or so when a planned major convention at the Coliseum (now torn down) was canceled at the last minute when the organizers failed to talk to/pay off the fire marshals. Carbonaro and pals like Vincent Zurzulo stepped in to throw a last-minute show in the basement of a church and a kind of tradition was born again...the kind of grimy, fan-focused shows that New York City fandom was founded on.

To do tonight, South Street Seaport: Gone to Amerikay Book Launch Party

Gone to Amerikay, the new Vertigo original graphic novel by Derek McCulloch and Colleen Doran, will have a book launch party, benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. McCulloch and Doran will both be at Harbor Lights Restaurant in New York City on March 30 from 6 to 8 pm, celebrating the release of their new book and demonstrating their support of the CBLDF’s mission. All are welcome to join the celebration; admission will be free, though donations to the CBLDF are suggested. There will be complimentary hors d’oeurves, and special guests from the comics community will be on hand to inaugurate Gone to Amerikay. Copies of the book will be on sale, courtesy of Midtown Comics.

Emerald City What's What

ECCC kicks off today in Seattle and while we can't be there in person (alas, longing for those Puget oysters), we have a few folks walking the floor and sending back reports. This is a full service con with 140 panels and a great guest line-up including Robert Kirkman, Marc Silvestri, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Scott Kurtz, Kelly Sue DeConnick and more.

To do, tonight, Seattle: Bowling for the Hero Initiative

0
Hero Initiative is the non-profit organization that aids comic creators in medical and financial need—and if you've been reading the Beat lately you know that they are more needed than ever. Tonight, as part of the Emerald City Comicon, they are having a bowling fundraiser which sounds like a great time for a great cause, as they say. Although spots have already been auctioned off, you can still go watch the fun:
