Pop quiz: What was the first graphic novel to make the New York Times' bestseller list? Most people would guess MAUS, and although we don't know exactly what book holds that honor, MAUS was predated by ALIEN: THE ILLUSTRATED STORY, by Archie Goodwin and Walt Simonson. First released in 1979 as a graphic "Album", it was an unusually serious (for its time) movie adaptation with the usual stellar work by the great team of Goodwin and Simonson, who also collaborated on Manhunter. The book sold so well it did make the NY Times bestseller list at the time.

Aside from releasing the above print for Comic-Con, Bryan Lee O'Malley has remained very tight-lipped about his upcoming graphic novel, SECONDS, to be published by Random House in 2013. With his post-Scott Pilgrim profile just growing and growing the book is sure to be the object of much attention. Thus it was surprising that an interview at the Random House Canada site was posted yesterday with many details on the book. And in fact the interview has since been taken down. But not before every website in town picked up on the details:

I haven't written a post for The Beat in quite some time; I have been working, writing and trying to start up some new businesses - but more on that another time. I am writing because of what happened in Colorado and because today is my son's birthday. And for those of you I don't know - I am a former DC Comics employee. My son has been looking forward to both his birthday and The Dark Knight Rises. In fact he has invited a few of his friends to go with him tonight to see the film. As I write this he is playing Batman: Arkham City, and when I got home last night he was watching The Dark Knight. I also noticed a stack of Batman graphic novels stacked on the dining room table.

The date was December 9th, 2011 when cartoonist and Center for Cartoon Studies professor Alec Longstreth shaved off his beard and shaggy do. A promise to himself in 2008, he decided to chart his progress through pictures of his hair and beard growth that would undoubtedly remind him daily of his commitment. Living in a small town with a beard as his shadow, Longstreth went from industrious Fellow of the school to an instructor of both summer workshops and graduate classes to the Acting Director (while James Sturm takes a much-needed sabbatical) . Remember good old Vertigo, the imprint where all the top writers for the New 52 got discovered and DC graphic novel book store sales were practically invented? Well, they are still at it! Plucky old Vertigo. And just to prove they still have what it takes, they have announced their book collections for the second half of 2012, including some truly awesome stuff, like a HUGE one-volume edition of THE INVISIBLES by Grant Morrison and his all stars (Quitely, Jimenez, Thompson, Weston, Buckingham etc., etc., etc.) that will weigh in at a mere 1536 pages and $150. Frankly, we didn't know they could print books that big and wide. Given that THE INVISIBLES is one of our favorite mainstream comic of the 90s, we are there. Make room, make room! They also announced two NEW gns, including Get Jiro! by Anthony Bourdain, Joel Rose and Langdon Foss, planned for June and Right State, just announced by Mat Johnson and Andrea Muti.

This one has been out there for a while but hasn't gotten too much attention: A.D.D., an original graphic novel by Douglas Rushkoff and Goran Sudzuka from Vertigo.

BY JEN VAUGHN - Cartoonist James Sturm wrote an insightful piece on submitting cartoons to the New Yorker posted on The Slate. As a cartoonist or unfortunately termed 'graphic novelist,' Sturm is used to drawing stories in the long term, stretching a few hundred pages, panel upon panel upon panel upon YES, panel. How Sturm spent his summer vacation was a cartoon a day to build up a keeper-portfolio for The New Yorker. Sturm relearned to let go of the beats you find in a long-form comic to sketch loosely and effectively situations right after that something funny, something intangible occurred. He includes many of his cartoons in the article including this close-to-home joke and one of my favorites, when the caption is recycled for a different situation.
