SAVE THE DATE for Jeffrey Brown's Sundance movie debut

0
In a world where every comics-to-movie project gets endlessly covered, SAVE THE DATE has pretty much flown under the radar -- but then it's an indie movie created by an indie cartoonist and not based specifically on a comics property. The film, based on ideas from indie cartoonist stalwart Jeffrey Brown, follows two sisters -- one about to get married, the other just broken up with her boyfriend, and how they approach love and commitment. Directed by Mike Mohan ("One Too Many Mornings") from a script by Mohan, Jeffrey Brown and Egan Reich, the movie debuts this weekend at Sundance and has already gotten some buzz behind it. It stars Lizzy Caplan (True Blood, 127 Hours), as the single sister (who happens to be a cartoonist), Alison Brie (Mad Men, Scream 4) as the sister about to get married, Martin Starr (Mad Love, Adventureland) and Geoffrey Arend.

Conan director stays in the "Hack and Slash" genre with Hack/Slash movie

The long batted about Hack/Slash movie, based on the Tim Seeley/Stefano Caselli comic of the same name, now has a new helmer attached: Marcus Nispel, whose previous slashing and hacking efforts include the disappointing Conan movies, PATHFINDER, and outings in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th franchises.

AKIRA film in doubt…again

Looks like we might not get that "New Manhattan" live-action version of AKIRA after all. I know you're all crying. Maybe Warner Bros. knows that too, as they shut down the Vancouver production office:

New Spider-Man stills

Via their Facebook page, the upcoming Spider-Man reboot movie posted some stills. Surely Jim Carrey is very excited now over this still of Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, as well as Captain Stacy and Peter Parker in action. Is it just us or has this Spidey reboot hype kind of gotten lost in the Batman/Avengers shuffle?

"Tintin" ventures far into the uncanny valley

Hey America! You've been given what you always wanted -- a TINTIN movie directed by Steven Spielberg! Right? But despite the years of clamor for this entertainment -- and the enthusiastic bowler-hatted selling by Spielberg and co-producer Peter Jackson -- THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN has been a bit of an underperformer at the crowded Chrsitmas box office, coming in at #5 for the long weekend with a 4-day weekend take of $14.3 million and a cumulative of $22.3 million. This has not been a huge worry to Paramount and Sony, however, because worldwide, it's already made $240 million.

2012 is not only set to be the end of the world, but perhaps the greatest box office showdown in modern times as THE AVENGERS and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES are both coming out...both movies have a chance at rewriting box office history. THE DARK KNIGHT is already #2 on the all-time list and has now won the first battle: the new trailer was downloaded 12.5 million times in its first 24 hours on iTunes, breaking the record of 10million downloads set in October by THE AVENGERS. What do you think? Which movie has YOU ruining a perfect good pair of jorts?

Lost in the Hype Shuffle – Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

We've had a Hobbit trailer. We've had Dark Knight Rises trailers. We've had John Carter trailers. But Craig Ferguson's favorite geek-to-film adaption is getting the short shrift. Behold: the new trailer for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (Ghost Rider 2, if you prefer).

THE HOBBIT trailer is up, and slash fiction will never be the same

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY trailer is up. We need to watch it about 39 more times before we can really render judgement, but Empire has a nice breakdown, including this guide to the dwarves, and already some how they did it info. The tone is pure LORD OF THE RINGS, none of this kid's tale stuff. And obviously the story is going to borrow liberally from the appendices -- Dol Gulder! Galadriel and Gandalf (The White Council!) The shards of Narsil!

These are being removed left and right -- but luckily the trailer will be officially released on Tuesday. Until then we'll have to make do with these handheld versions.
