Oni to publish print version of Towle’s Oyster War
We've covered Oyster War here quite a bit, Ben Towle's historical fantasy webcomic about 19th century Chesapeake bay oystermen engaged in a territory war with some magical assistance— it's part Scalped, part Sailor Twain. Towle alluded to a print publisher a while and ago and Oni just made it official: the print, color version is coming in September for SPX! Towle is a three time Eisner nominee for books like his Amelia Earhart bio, and this is a fun, frolic of a book.
Hopeless Savages is back with Break
More Oni Press news! Jen van Meter's Hopeless Savages, a family drama about the kids of a punk rock family growing up and coming of age, has run since 2000, a very early example of a comics genre now common. Along the way it picked up some pretty amazing artistic collaborators in Christine Norrie, Chynna Clugston, Andi Watson, Bryan Lee O'Malley, and Vera Brosgol. Now it's back in an updated story with older character. Van Meter writes, Meredith McClaren draws, and original artist Christine Norrie does the flashbacks.
May Madness: Oni announces open submissions
So what will all those newly promoted editors at Oni be doing? Reading a lot of email it seems. A new open submissions period has been announced. It's good to see Oni getting back into the game a bit, especially with the diversity that they always supported becoming the industry norm.
Oni promotes three as it ramps up
Oni has just announced the promotion of three of its editors in preparation for new creator owned and licensed titles. While all the promotions are well deserved, they might also serve as a preemptive hedge against DC's talent raid on West Coast editorial offices. The short version: Charlie Chu has been promoted to Senior Editor, Robin Herrera to Editor, and Ari Yarwood to Associate Editor. And the books they will be working on include Kaijumax, Invader Zim and Rick and Morty. PLUS they got portraits by John Allison! It is a day of winning.
Invader Zim and Jhonen Vasquez are back from Oni Press
Jhonen Vasquez is a comics superstar, with a huge fan base for his dark gothic creations, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, which ran as a comics from Slave Labor, and Invader Zim, a cartoon on Nickelodeon. His profile has been pretty quiet of late, but that should change quickly with Invader Zim coming back in comics form from Oni in July. The comic will be written and drawn by Vasquez and published in conjunction with Nickelodeon.
