We desperately need more Thanksgiving themed comics covers! Now Marvel and Terry and Rachel Dodson are answering our prayers with a Turkey-fest themed variant cover for ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #11.
For years, when illustrating anything Thanksgiving and comics themed, we’ve made do with this admittedly awesome JLA cover, by the late great Carlos Pacheco, which features Power Girl pertly bending over as she delivers a roasted turkey with all the trimmins to a hungry horde of JLAers.
But Marvel has upped their game with this Spider-Man family cover. In the current ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN continuity, deftly crafted by Jonathan Hickman and Marco Checchetto, Peter Parker is a happily married husband and father who webslings in his spare time. No angst about secret identities, and readers seem to love it.
To celebrate, we have the Dodsons’ take on Mary Jane pertly delivering her own roast turkey to a Spider-family that is all smiles…for now.
With his secret double life out in the open, Spidey joins his wife and kids for a picturesque Thanksgiving feast. But don’t be fooled! The life of this Peter Parker is far from perfect, and with upcoming threats like Black Cat, Kraven the Hunter, and the Sinister Six—not to mention the impending return of the Maker, the deranged alternate universe Reed Richards behind the creation of this corrupt world—Peter will need the support of Mary Jane, May, and Richard Parker more than ever!
This cover, like Pacheco’s is a take-off on Normal Rockwell’s famed Saturday Evening post cover, but Dodson throws in a few more homages, as Spidey delivers an upside down kiss as immortalized in the first Spider movie. Peter is also trying to steal a drumstick – who hasn’t? – but if he pulls that turkey off the plate there will be no quarter asked nor given.
