After launching its novel feature, Manta Novels, Manta Comics is looking to extend its mark on the webcomics world by embarking on its latest venture. Manta Comics announced its collaboration with Meet Cute, a fiction podcast, to adapt I’ve Become a True Villainess into a scripted audio drama series.
The audio drama will star the voice acting talents of Rebecca Rose who portrays the eponymous villainess Seria Sterne, Shogo Miyakita as Archduke Rouche Berk, Hao Feng as Seria’s fiancé Callis, and Suzie Rai as Lina, the original novel’s female lead. Overseeing and producing the audio drama is Liz Fields who recently wrote and directed Imperfect Match. Eliot Krimsky will be in charge of sound design and editing. Lucie Ledbetter and Amarlie Foster will serve as the SVP of Production and Director of Development, respectively. The audio drama adaptation of I’ve Become a True Villainess debuts on June 11.
Since its launch in 2020, Meet Cute has quickly shot up to become one of the top fiction podcast in the U.S and has created more than 500 evergreen stories. Meet Cute produces an original six-episode cinematic audio rom com on a monthly basis. The fiction podcast is also dipping its toes into television adaptation as it has secured a number of movie and TV development deals.
Naomi Shah, the CEO and founder of Meet Cute, explained why they decided on turning I’ve Become a True Villainess into an audio drama. “When we first read I’ve Become A True Villainess, we immediately knew it was a special title and were drawn to the character arcs in the webcomic and its robust fanbase.”
She continued, “Like Meet Cute, Manta understands the power of storytelling, and we can’t wait for our collective audiences and beyond to experience this story in a new medium – immersive, cinematic audio.”
Similarly, the CEO at Manta, Travis Kim, expressed excitement over the adaptation and explained what this collaboration with Meet Cute meant in relation to the platform’s overall goal, remarking, “This partnership exemplifies the versatility of Manta‘s storytelling and our unwavering commitment to delivering engaging narratives across different mediums.”
The novel, originally written by Flowing HonEy, was adapted into a webcomic series with art by Bokyung Kong. Season 1 premiered on the platform on Nov. 29, 2022 and spanned 51 episodes. Season 2 launched on Nov. 8, 2023 and is currently ongoing. The novel that the webcomic was originally based on released much later on Jan. 31, 2024 with seven volumes.
I’ve Become a True Villainess follows a young woman who gets reincarnated into the villainess of a romance novel, the wicked and vicious Seria Sterne. Knowing that only death awaits the green-haired villainess, Seria puts all of her energy into righting the villainess’s wrongs except even after everything she’s done, things aren’t going the way she had planned. For one, Rouche, the novel’s male lead, has taken a sudden interest in her.
I’ve Become a True Villainess audio drama launches on June 11 across all major podcasting platforms, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Fans can catch up to the webcomic and original novel on Manta.
